Work Text:
Ochaco noticed Tsuyu without meaning to.
She always did.
It happened in small, quiet ways, how Tsuyu lingered at the edges of rooms instead of the center, how her voice stayed calm even when everything else felt loud, how she listened like what you said mattered even if you didn’t think it did yourself.
Right now, Tsuyu was standing near the window, hands folded neatly around a warm mug, watching the snow drift down outside the dorms. The green lights strung along the ceiling reflected faintly in the glass, casting soft shadows
over her face.
Ochaco felt her chest tighten. She told herself it was nothing. Just admiration. Just friendship.
But then she glanced around the common room, and that excuse stopped working.
Midoriya and Hagakure were curled together on the opposite sofa, heads bent close as they whispered over something on his phone. Todoroki and Yaoyorozu stood near the tree, hands brushing occasionally, comfortable in a shared silence that spoke of trust built over time.
Across the room, Kaminari was animatedly talking while Jirou pretended not to smile at him, her shoulder leaning into his without hesitation. Even Bakugo and Kirishima, somehow, had ended up side by side, Kirishima laughing loud and easy while Bakugo grumbled but didn’t move away.
Everyone seemed to have found someone.
Ochaco’s gaze drifted back to Tsuyu.
I want that, she admitted silently.
I want… that kind of closeness. With
her.
The thought scared her more than villains ever had.
Tsuyu had been aware of Ochaco for a while now.
Long enough that she’d stopped pretending it was accidental.
Ochaco had a way of filling space without realizing it, bright, earnest, endlessly giving. Tsuyu watched how she checked in on everyone else first, how she smiled even when she was clearly exhausted, how her laughter came easily but her worries stayed carefully hidden.
Right now, Ochaco was sitting on the sofa, knees tucked up, absently rubbing her thumb along the edge of her sleeve.
She looked tired. Thoughtful.
Tsuyu felt a quiet ache settle in her chest.
Around them, the room hummed with warmth and togetherness. Couples moved naturally around one another, fitting like puzzle pieces that had finally found their match.
Tsuyu understood patterns. She understood cause and effect. What she didn’t understand was why her pulse quickened whenever Ochaco looked her way, or why she found herself wanting to close the distance between them, even when neither of them moved.
If I don’t say anything, Tsuyu thought, nothing will change. She glanced up, and noticed the mistletoe hanging just above the doorway between the couches and the window.
Ah.
So that’s how it is, she thought calmly.
Ochaco stood first.
“I was gonna grab some tea,” she said, a little too quickly. “You want some, Tsu?”
“Yes,” Tsuyu replied. “I’ll come with you.”
They met halfway across the room, steps slowing as they realized, almost at the same time, where they’d stopped.
Right beneath the mistletoe.
Ochaco laughed softly, rubbing the back of her neck. “Wow. I guess Mina really went all out.”
Tsuyu nodded. “She said it was for ‘emotional honesty.’”
Ochaco snorted. “Sounds about right.”
They didn’t move.
The air between them felt heavier, not uncomfortable, just charged. Like something important was waiting to be acknowledged.
“Tsu,” Ochaco began, then hesitated.
“Can I ask you something?”
Tsuyu met her eyes. “You already did.”
Ochaco smiled faintly at that, then took a breath. “Do you ever… look at everyone else and think maybe you waited too long?”
Tsuyu considered her words carefully. “I think,” she said, “that sometimes people wait because they don’t want to risk losing something important.”
Ochaco swallowed. “Yeah. That.”
There was a pause.
Then Tsuyu stepped closer, not enough to crowd her, just enough to close the gap.
“If the mistletoe gives us an excuse,”
Tsuyu said gently, “then maybe we
should use it.”
Ochaco’s eyes widened slightly. “You mean-”
“I like you,” Tsuyu said simply. “More than a friend. I’ve known for a while.”
Ochaco’s breath caught.
“I like you too,” she confessed, the words tumbling out faster now. “I was just scared I’d mess it up. Or that you didn’t feel the same.”
Tsuyu’s lips curved into the smallest smile. “I do.”
Ochaco laughed softly, blinking back emotion. “Guess… guess that settles it then.”
Tsuyu tilted her head. “May I?”
Ochaco nodded immediately.
The kiss was gentle and deliberate, unhurried, like they were giving each other time to adjust to the truth of it.
Tsuyu’s hand rested lightly at Ochaco’s wrist, steady and grounding. Ochaco leaned into her without thinking, heart lightening in a way she hadn’t realized it needed.
They didn’t notice at first.
The room had narrowed to the space between them, the quiet hum of the party fading into something distant and unimportant. Ochaco’s fingers were still curled lightly into Tsuyu’s sleeve;
Tsuyu’s hand rested steady at Ochaco’s wrist, grounding her, anchoring her in the moment.
Then…
“Oh!”
Ochaco startled slightly, breath hitching as she became aware of movement nearby.
A few steps away, Izuku stood frozen, mid-step, a cup of punch held awkwardly in his hands. Beside him, Hagakure had leaned in, only to stop short.
Izuku’s eyes widened, then softened almost immediately.
“I- I’m so sorry!” he blurted, already turning his head away far too quickly.
“We didn’t mean to interrupt, I swear, we were just-!”
Hagakure’s voice chimed in, bright and cheerful. “Oh my gosh, wait, no, don’t
apologize! That was so cute.”
Ochaco felt heat rush to her face, instinctively stepping half a pace closer to Tsuyu. Tsuyu didn’t move away. Instead, her grip adjusted, subtle, protective without being possessive.
Hagakure clasped her hands together, excitement practically sparkling in her voice. “I knew it! I mean- I didn’t know know, but I totally felt the vibe!”
Tsuyu blinked once. “You did?”
“Absolutely!” Hagakure said. “You two always stick together. And you look out for each other in fights, and, oh! And you get that quiet look when the other one’s around.”
Ochaco laughed softly, nerves easing.
“Do we really?”
“Totally,” Hagakure confirmed without hesitation.
Izuku nodded quickly. “Y-Yeah. I mean- um- you both look really happy.” He hesitated, then added more firmly,
“I’m… really glad.”
Tsuyu hummed thoughtfully. “Thank you.”
Hagakure beamed. “Okay, we’ll give you space! Come on, Deku, before I accidentally walk into something.”
“S-Sorry! Coming!” Izuku said, already backing away again, flustered but smiling.
As their footsteps faded back into the noise of the party, the moment settled once more around Tsuyu and Ochaco.
Ochaco exhaled, shoulders relaxing.
“…That wasn’t as embarrassing as I thought it would be.”
“No,” Tsuyu agreed softly. “It wasn’t.”
When they pulled apart, they stayed close, foreheads nearly touching.
“I’m glad,” Ochaco whispered.
“So am I,” Tsuyu replied. “Ribbit.”
Around them, the room carried on, laughter, music, warmth, but something had shifted. Not loudly. Not dramatically. Just enough.
And for the first time that evening, Ochaco didn’t feel like she was missing anything at all.
The halls were quieter now.
Most of the music and laughter from the common room had faded into a distant hum, replaced by the soft echo of footsteps and the faint creak of the dorm floors settling for the night. Snow tapped lightly against the windows as Ochaco and Tsuyu walked side by side, neither of them in a hurry to get anywhere.
They hadn’t said much since leaving the party.
Not because there was nothing to say, if anything, it felt like there was too much, but because the silence between them had changed. It wasn’t awkward or uncertain anymore. It felt… warm. Shared.
Ochaco glanced sideways, just to make sure Tsuyu was still there. She was. Hands tucked into her sleeves, expression calm as ever, eyes forward, but her steps matched Ochaco’s without effort, like they’d been walking this way together for far longer than a few minutes.
“…You okay?” Ochaco asked softly.
Tsuyu nodded. “I am. Are you?”
Ochaco smiled, a little shy. “Yeah. I think I am. I just-” She exhaled, then laughed quietly. “I didn’t realize how nervous I was until it stopped.”
Tsuyu looked at her then. “Your heart rate slowed down after we kissed.”
Ochaco blinked. “You noticed that?”
“I notice things,” Tsuyu replied simply.
That earned her another soft laugh.
Ochaco’s shoulders relaxed, tension she hadn’t known she was carrying finally easing away. They reached the point where the hallway split—Tsuyu’s dorm wing to the left, Ochaco’s to the right. Neither of them moved to turn.
Ochaco shifted her weight, fingers curling lightly into the hem of her sleeve. “So… this is new.”
“Yes,” Tsuyu agreed. “But not unfamiliar.”
Ochaco tilted her head. “What do you mean?”
Tsuyu thought for a moment. “It feels like something that’s been there for a while. We just… acknowledged it.”
Ochaco felt her chest warm at that.
“Yeah. That sounds right.”
She hesitated, then added, “I was worried it’d feel different. Like everything would suddenly change.”
Tsuyu shook her head gently. “We’re still us. We just know something extra now.”
Ochaco smiled, eyes soft. “I like that.”
They stood there a moment longer, neither wanting to be the first to go.
Eventually, Tsuyu stepped a little closer, not enough to overwhelm, just enough to make her presence unmistakable.
“I’m glad you said something,” she said.
“Even if the mistletoe helped.”
Ochaco grinned. “I’m glad it did. I don’t think I would’ve had the courage otherwise.”
Tsuyu considered that, then reached out, slowly, deliberately, and took Ochaco’s hand. Ochaco’s breath caught, but she didn’t pull away. Her fingers curled instinctively around Tsuyu’s, fitting together easily.
“We can take this at whatever pace you want,” Tsuyu said. “No pressure.”
Ochaco squeezed her hand once.
“Thank you. But… I don’t want to take it back. Not even a little.”
Tsuyu’s lips curved into a small, fond smile. “Neither do I.”
Reluctantly, they turned toward their respective dorms, hands still linked for a few steps longer than strictly necessary.
“Goodnight, Tsu,” Ochaco said quietly.
“Goodnight, Ochaco,” Tsuyu replied.
“Sleep well.”
They parted then, slowly, with one last shared look, before heading their separate ways.
As Ochaco walked down her hall, she caught herself smiling for no reason at all.
Not giddy.
Not overwhelmed.
Just… steady.
And for the first time in a long while, the future didn’t feel like something she had to chase.
It felt like something she was already walking toward, side by side with someone who had chosen her too.
