Summary
Nothing could persuade Rebecca Gardiner that her cousin Mary Bennet intending to marry Mr Ryder did not indicate something very wrong in the universe. But their parents had forbidden them to pester Mary about the matter, Cousin Elizabeth seemed curiously enthusiastic about it, Cousin Fitzwilliam was related to Mr Ryder and Tom had vanished off the face of the earth. Logic suggested there was no other alternative than accept it.
‘No!’ exclaimed Marianne. ‘We won’t give up. Not yet. We have to stop this. We must be constant unto our task.’
George was flummoxed. ‘What does that mean?’
‘I don’t really know,’ admitted Marianne. ‘Tom said it once. But if nobody else cares enough about Mary to stop this, then it must be us. There has to be a grown up somewhere who will help us.’
