Kiyoomi and Atsumu. Atsumu and Kiyoomi. Everyone thought they were enemies— but nobody saw the way Kiyoomi kissed Atsumu’s forehead whenever they met every other weekend. Nobody saw the way Atsumu sat down and patiently wrote a handwritten letter for Kiyoomi for every birthday, anniversary and holiday. Nobody knew that the pair had been secretly dating since their third year of middle school.
“Samu, Samu! We’re gon’ compete against that fancy academy!” Atsumu exclaimed, facing his brother. Osamu sighed, rolling his eyes but a smile still tugged at his lips. “Yeah. Itachiyama Academy. We’re goin’ against their middle school team.” “Well duh! It wouldn’t be fair if we went against their high school team!”
The following week, Itachiyama Academy went to Hyogo for a training camp. Atsumu was absolutely infatuated with Kiyoomi’s bendy wrists. Kiyoomi was intrigued by Atsumu’s precise sets. They thought they’d get along— but every time Atsumu approached Kiyoomi with the intention of setting to him, their conversations always ended in an argument. They didn’t get along. Everyone knew they were a powerful pair on the court, but enemies outside of it. On the last day of the camp, Atsumu swallowed his pride and asked Kiyoomi for his number, complimenting his skills as a spiker and wanting to know more about how his wrist affected his spikes.
After that, Atsumu started texting Kiyoomi every day. Surprisingly, Kiyoomi texted back every time. On paper, Atsumu was everything Kiyoomi hated— and Kiyoomi was everything Atsumu hated. Despite this, they found themselves completely drawn to each other. Kiyoomi picked up when Atsumu called at two in the morning because “Kiyoomiiiiii, why is physics so hard?!” and walked him through Newton’s laws without complaining. Atsumu called Kiyoomi all day instead of pushing through with his plans to go out with his family, just because Kiyoomi needed someone to talk to while his parents were at work after saying they’d spend time with him. Soon enough, Kiyoomi turned to Omi or Omi-Omi, while Atsumu became Tsu or Tsum-Tsum (the latter of which Atsumu enforced, after Kiyoomi refused to call him “such a childish nickname.”) Just before they officially graduated middle school, Atsumu mustered up the courage to take a train to Tokyo, go to Kiyoomi’s house and confess his feelings with a box of homemade chocolates he’d made with Osamu. All Atsumu received in return was a pout from a fully suited up Kiyoomi, because “I was gonna confess to you in three hours.” They laughed about it before sharing their first kiss. Atsumu called his ma, saying he’d be sleeping at a “friend’s” place.
