“What do you think you’re doing?” Sakusa Kiyoomi’s icy voice echoed through the now silent room. “Unhand him.” Everyone had quieted down to stare at the small circle of players, surrounding the setter of Inarizaki and the ace of Itachiyama.
“Wait wait wait! Restart the story, I didn’t catch what happened before that!”
“Okay okay. Just for ya, Koutarou!”
“Me too, me too!”
“Yes, you too Shouyou.”
Let’s rewind a bit.
“Samu, ya hafta come with us!” Atsumu pouted at his twin who stoically sat on his bed. “No! ‘M stayin’ here in Hyogo with baaba and jiiji,” Osamu protested. The twins glared at each other before their mother intervened. “Now now. Atsumu, yer brother doesn’t hafta go if he doesn't want to.” Their father entered the twins’ bedroom behind his wife, leaning against the doorframe. “Himari, we have to go. Will Osamu be coming or not?” “Patience, Sasaki. They’re still deciding.”
Atsumu looked at his father, then at his brother. “I don’t wanna go!” Osamu snapped, crossing his arms. “But ‘Samu, ya hafta! I’ll be lonely,” the small volleyball player cried. He clung to his brother tightly, not wanting to go anywhere without him. “Tsumu, darlin’, ye’ll make friends in Tokyo. We’ll only be out for the weekend, ‘nd on Sunday we’ll pick Samu up from obaa-chan and ojii-san’s house, okay?” The boy nodded. “Okay..”
*obaa-chan and ojii-san are informal ways to address your grandparents. little kids often shorten them to baaba and jiiji.
The Miya family went to Tokyo to see Sasaki’s parents, leaving Osamu at their maternal grandparents’ house in Hyogo. At first, Atsumu clung to his mother. He’d never been anywhere without his brother for too long, and it’d already been nearly four hours. That was, until the neighbors knocked on the door. The couple next door to his grandparents’ house had just moved in, and wanted to greet the elderly couple. They had a son as well, the same age as Atsumu. “Tsumu, why don’cha try playin’ with Kiyoomi-kun over there?” Himari gestured to the curly haired boy sitting on a chair in the kitchen. “Okay mama.”
At first, the pair bickered. They simply couldn’t get along— until Himari ushered both of them to Atsumu’s old room in the attic— the place he sleeps whenever he visits his grandparents. Atsumu was sulking on his bed, upset that he had to spend time with this prick. “You like volleyball?” Kiyoomi asked, picking up a small Mikasa ball on the side of the room, making Atsumu perk up almost immediately. “Yeah,” Atsumu responded. “Ya like volleyball too?” Kiyoomi nodded. That was their very first connection.
Even after Atsumu returned home, he sent letters to Kiyoomi without his brother’s knowledge, because “why is it Samu’s problem who my friends are?” They exchanged letters through the post office weekly, which turned into begging their parents for phones, because “I’m almost 12, I’m old enough!” They finally exchanged their last letter conversation, where they received each other’s phone numbers. From there, they began texting daily. They’d started dating at 13, where Kiyoomi had asked Atsumu to be his boyfriend over the phone as soon as the blond opened his mail, finding flowers from his crush with a note that read “when you receive this, call me. <3, kiyoomi.” Of course, Atsumu accepted and they’d been happily dating since. By the time they’d reached their second year of high school, the lovers had a tight bond, a routine and two matching rings. They’d assumed everyone knew they were together. I mean, they bicker like an old married couple, they call every night, and send each other their favorite homemade dishes almost every week, right? Wrong.
The Inarizaki volleyball team was on the way to Itachiyama for a training camp. “Thanks for settin’ all’is up, Shin,” Aran whispered on the bus next to his lover. “It’s no problem. I believe this’ll help all’o ye bond and grow as a team, yeah?” Shinsuke replied, slipping a small smile.
The bus was mostly chaos, everyone talking over eachother, otherwise eating or snoring. Atsumu was practically vibrating with excitement before Hitoshi, who was seated next to him, spoke up. “Atsumu, word of advice, please stop harassin’ Itachiyama’s ace.” Everyone quieted down at that, before everyone started adding to it. “Tsumu, you’re always followin’ Sakusa around like a lost puppy, i’nt even know how he hasn’t gotten a restrainin’ order yet,” Osamu retorted next to Rintarou, who snickered. “Come on ‘Samu. If Sakusa gets a restraining order against Atsumu, how are we gonna drag them along when we go on dates?” Everyone laughed, except for Atsumu. “What are y’all on about? Omi-Omi loves me!” He didn’t understand. Why are they trying to give me relationship advice? Omi would never get a restraining order against me.
Shinsuke stood up. “We’re here everyone.” Immediately the chatter started again. Hitoshi excitedly stood up, along with Osamu and Rintarou who were excited to see their boyfriends. Hitoshi immediately screamed “Tsukasa!” as soon as he saw his partner through the window, who immediately rushed out and gave him a hug. Osamu and Rintarou followed, managing to reach the gym door before getting tackled by Motoya. The rest of the team got out of the bus, walking around the lovesick couples practically making out on the floor outside the gym. Shinsuke and Aran walked toward Itachiyama’s coaches to greet them, hand in hand, while Michinari and Ren approached Hitoshi and Tsukasa. The four of them went on double dates often, so they’d gotten a lot closer within the past year. Atsumu was just about to run to Kiyoomi, to tackle him like the others had tackled their own partners, but was held back by Heisuke. “Riseki-kun!” Atsumu whined. Heisuke looked unsure, but refused to let go. “Sorry Atsumu-senpai. Kita-senpai said I’d to keep ya from harassin’ Sakusa-kun.” The blond pouted, but assumed they didn’t want him to get all lovey-dovey with his boyfriend on the court. Whatever. I’ll let it slide.
After practice, everyone was exhausted. It was nearly one in the afternoon, and everyone was in a private room in a nearby restaurant so that all the players could talk without interruptions. Atsumu was just about to sit next to his boyfriend, but Osamu was faster, grabbing his twin by the collar almost immediately. “Tsumu! I thought we told’ja to quit harassing him!” The grey haired Miya berated his brother, who looked confused and upset. Rintarou, Hitoshi, Heisuke, Michinari and Ren had joined in making a small circle around Atsumu to try and coerce him into going with them to sit somewhere else. Kiyoomi’s brows furrowed as he watched the scene in front of him. The moment he saw the upset, almost teary expression in Atsumu’s eyes, he stood up. “What do you think you’re doing?” the ace’s icy voice echoed through the now silent room. “Unhand him.” Everyone had quieted down to stare at the small circle of players, surrounding the setter of Inarizaki and the ace of Itachiyama. Osamu raised an eyebrow, hesitantly releasing his brother. Almost immediately, the setter ran into his boyfriend's arms. Motoya winced. Rintarou took out his phone, and Osamu’s jaw dropped. Michinari felt like he was about to pop a vein— they’d just been warning him to be careful with Sakusa! Why is he— wait. What?!
Atsumu hugging Kiyoomi was unexpected enough— they’d hated each other for the longest time. What made everyone’s jaws hit the floor was when Kiyoomi hugged him back. They’d all been bracing for the misophobe to push the setter away— yell, even leave the room. Anything, except for this. The tension was thick enough to choke on— Motoya’s jaw snapping against the wooden table which rattled each pair of chopsticks against each platter, the only noise in the otherwise silent room. Osamu’s hand was still suspended in the air from having just released his brother’s collar.
“Omi!” Atsumu whined, hitting his boyfriend’s chest with the sides of his first. “They’re bein’ mean to me. Omi, tell ‘em they’re bein’ mean to me!” the blond pouted, earning a raised eyebrow and a quiet hm from his lover. “They’re your teammates. Why don’t you tell them they’re being mean?” Kiyoomi’s palm pressed onto Atsumu’s forehead, pushing the blond backwards slightly. “Because you’re my boyfriend? You’re supposed to defend me—“ “WHAT?!” Atsumu whipped around to see everyone, including the coaches, absolutely shell shocked. “What? Ya didn’t know ya’ll were bein’ mean ta me?” Atsumu’s brows furrowed as his hands rested on his hips. “Y’all really gotta start taking socialization classes.” Osamu, who’d normally retort back at such an insult, stayed completely silent. “Since when were you dating?!” Now it was Atsumu and Kiyoomi’s turn to be confused. “Since.. like, four years ago,” Atsumu replied to his brother, which earned a cough from Rintarou. “Four years and three months,” Kiyoomi added, which elicited a choke from Motoya who’d began hitting his chest and chugging water. The setter took his boyfriend’s hand, holding it up for everyone to see. A shiny glint caught the light— it was a gorgeous rose gold with small gold specks. “We were going to announce this today,” Kiyoomi grumbled, upset that he hadn’t gotten to make the announcement to his cousin first. “They’re engagement rings! Omi and I made ‘em together after I proposed with a cheap ass ring, we’re planning to continue using them after we get married!” Atsumu exclaimed, practically bursting with joy. “Kiyo. You’re. Engaged?!” Motoya yelled, standing up. His hands banged against the table, to which he flinched and apologized under his breath. “Why didn’t you tell me?!” “Everyone knew, Motoya. Didn’t y’all?” Atsumu asked, looking around for any faces with a hint of approval, but all he found was confusion and shock. “Nobody? Y’all, Omi literally sent fatty tuna to me through the Inarizaki guards,” the blond sighed, exasperated. “That wasn’t from your mom?!” Rintarou wheezed, laughing at how red his boyfriends’ faces were. “No! Why would mama cook me fatty tuna for absolutely no reason?!”
“Woah! That was such a funny coming out!” Koutarou laughed boisterously, before Shouyou nodded furiously. “Omi-kun, you were so cool!” The setter of the Jackals simply laughed as his husband stared at his teammates, exasperated. Well, teammate and ex-teammate. “Are you happy now with our coming out story?” Kiyoomi asked, glancing at his husband who was still giggling. “Yeah! Thanks Tsumu, Omi!” Shouyou exclaimed, before Koutarou followed. “Yes, yes!! Thanks Tsum-Tsum and Omi-Omi!”
“I hope this was a good enough farewell gift for ye, Shouyou,” Atsumu smiled, but it was a little sad. Kiyoomi looked away, not wanting to make eye contact. Koutarou’s face dropped, as if he didn’t want to be reminded. Shouyou simply smiled his signature bright grin. “Yes! I loved it, thank you guys! I’ll miss the Jackals, lots of love from Brazil!”
