Insectopia

Summary:

Judy and Nick go watch a film.

While she's watching, the fox stares at his partner for a little too long.

Work Text:

"Blech, so corny."

The rabbit turned to the whispering, vulpine partner on her right. "Kinda like you," she returned.

The two at the moment were in the movie theater, watching Insectopia, a computer-animated film about a female moth cop and a male spider conman in a bug utopia.

"Very funny, Carrots," Nick replied dryly before picking off a stray piece of popcorn from Judy's face. "You're welcome. Was really hard to take you seriously with that on you."

She tried to hide the fact her heart skipped a beat due to the (infinitesimally brief) physical contact. "At least you can take me seriously sometimes. It's hard to take you seriously just overall."

"Whoa." The fox was glad the theater was mostly empty, so they didn't have to stay too quiet. "Is it 'cause of my dashing looks?" he jested as he gave her a dorky smirk.

"You smirk like a dad," she spat back. "No, that's too generous. You smirk like your dad."

"Yeowch." He shuddered. "Brutal."

From the pictures he's shown her, they both agreed his father had an "interesting" sort of smile. His father was handsome, Judy thought, but he did not know how to smile.

The two had their eyes glued again to the film projection. As Nick scanned the vicinity, he could see around five, maybe six people, not including them. It made sense, seeing as it was a workday, but thankfully the two had a day off.

Still facing the movie, he discreetly shifted his eyes toward his partner, his friend, his pack.

Her smaller figure was faintly illuminated by the light of the film. He could still see the reflection of the movie in the large pupils of her even larger, adorable eyes. He was more fascinated by her purple irises than he'd like to admit. They really were pretty. Wasn't just a bunny thing too; he couldn't think of a prettier bunny than his Carrots.

His Carrots?

He gulped and corrected himself mentally, taking that "his" out.

She wasn't his.

Did he wish she was?

"I can see you staring at me, you know."

Nick's heart stopped as he sat still, as if he were frozen. "Uh..."

She sighed. "I have another popcorn bit on me, don't I?"

Coincidentally she did, and Nick gave a hundred and one thanks to whomever was up there watching him.

"Happens to the best of us," he answered slyly as he picked it off. "And the fluffiest of us."

"Yeah, yeah," she groaned before letting out a little giggle. "And you got one on you too."

"I do?" he asked as he hurriedly examined his face with his paw for any specks.

She picked it off from his cheek. "Happens to the best of us," she told him before popping it into her mouth.

The two of them walked out the screening room and threw away their shared popcorn bucket.

"So, what did we think?" she asked. "Out of ten."

"Seven," he rated the movie as he licked the butter off his fingers. "It was OK. Wasn't a masterpiece but..."

"That makes sense, I guess." She stretched her arms out in the hallway. "I'd give it an eight. The spider guy was cute."

"He was meh," opined the fox. "But ew, you're into a spider?! You're not one of those 'buggies,' are you?"

"N-no!" she insisted. "And 'he was meh'? You take that back!" Judy demanded with a grin as she punched him in the arm. "Did you know in Europe the name of the movie's Insectropolis?"

"Huh?"
