2:54, that was the time shown on the clock sitting on top of the desk, bathed in moonlight next to a glass of whiskey Leon served himself before going to sleep. It was the fourth time this week that you had woken up in the middle of the night.
You looked to the other side of the bed as you sat up. Leon was still there, sleeping on his stomach, with half of his back uncovered by the sheets, part of his face pressed against the pillow and his hands underneath it
He looked so peaceful, so adorable, he slept like a baby. After all the missions, strange creatures, and infections he deals with in his daily life, it made you happy knowing that he could finally rest
You couldn't help it but your hands moved through his light and silky hair. It was so soft, but without meaning to, you woke him up
“hey… babe?” -he said in his hoarse voice, still not opening his eyes- “you wake up again?”
“No, no, don't worry…” you didn't want Leon to spend another night awake with you just because you couldn't sleep. He had work, and you didn't want to ruin his sleep schedule
“Sorry for waking you, I just went to the bathroom”
“it’s fine, but I didn't hear you…” Leon said, opening his eyes this time
“Because you were sleeping, silly” you excused yourself, gently stroking his back, Leon just let out a small, sleepy hum
“you sure you're going to sleep?” Leon asked, looking into your eyes, his voice still rough and exhausted
“Yes, babe…” you both stayed silent, neither of you believed that
Leon let out a slightly grumpy sound
“What is wrong, babe?” -Leon lifted his head and sat beside you- “is not the first time you woke up in the middle of the night”
“Yeah, but nothing's wrong…” you answered, playing with the ring in your middle finger
“Hey, if something's wrong, you can tell me. You know that, right?” Leon noticed you fidgeting and took your hand “Have you eaten today?”
you stayed completely silent, of course you wanna tell Leon, but you didn't even know what was wrong with you, nor why you couldn't eat or sleep properly
Leon didn't force you to answer, he just stayed quiet with you
“I understand if you don't wanna tell me, but Im worried” Leon said, stroking your hair and pulling your head gently against his bare chest
“Is not that… sorry for worrying you”
Leon was probably more confused than you were, but he didn't want to overthink it
“Is it your period? That thing you girls get before it comes…” he asked, maybe without knowing what he was asking
you let out a small laugh “No, is not... I got it two weeks ago”
Leon nodded and continued stroking your hair, still not really understanding what was happening.
“Go back to sleep, babe…” you told Leon, trying to pull away from him a little, but he didn't let you “I feel bad knowing you're not resting because of me”
“I have the day off tomorrow, it’s fine” Leon answered, although it didn't really convince you
“Im going to the balcony for a while, okay? Go and get some rest, Leon”
Leon nodded and you got up to stay on the balcony, sitting quietly against the railing while the cold night air brushed against your face and your bare arms. You didn't know what you were thinking about anymore. The city was quiet from up there, to be honest, the city was very bright, a lot of lights were in the buildings across the street, and every now and then you could hear a car passing somewhere in the distance
You didn't even notice how much time had passed until the balcony door opened behind you
You turned your head and saw Leon standing there, with his hair messy and his eyes barely open, shirtless only wearing a pair of black shorts, he was holding the blanket you left on the bed around his shoulders
“You still awake?” You asked Leon
“Bed feels colder without you” Leon says, approaching you, you just let a small smile, almost a laugh
Leon smiled back when he saw you “You have been there for half an hour”
Your eyes gazed to the clock on the desk, 3:38 “Oh, I didn't realized”
“C'mere , you said you didn't want me to stay awake, but I can't sleep without you”
You let another smile, not knowing how Leon could find the words to make your mood
You went with him and he wrapped his hands around your waist, the two of you heading back to bed
Leon pulled the blanket over both of you before lying down, immediately pulling you against his chest, again, resting your head against him, while you listened to his slow breathing
“Did the fresh air make you feel any better?” he murmured
“mhm” you gave him a quiet hum
Leon smiled faintly and slowly closed his eyes “Thats good to hear”
You stayed quiet, gently playing with his hair, still messy but silky. For a few minutes, neither of you said anything, his breathing slowly became deeper and his arms seemed to relax around your waist
“Babe?” you looked up at him, but he had already fallen asleep
You couldn't help but smile at him, after everything he went through every day, somehow, all it took for him to fall asleep was having you beside him
You kissed his cheek and closed your eyes too, finally feeling like you could rest
