Work Text:
Broker held some files against his chest as he walked. He was sent to deliver said files to Scythe in her office, and he was more than happy to do so! Thinking about seeing her again, he walked with a small skip every few steps. Once he reached Scythe's office, he peeked inside. Instead of seeing her relaxing or working, he found Scythe with her head in her hands. She seemed... awfully upset, so, being the best friend Broker could be, he tried comforting her.
"My dear?" He quietly called out to Scythe, leaning over to try to see her face. All that Broker could see of her was the wetness of her tears smeared across her face, along with hearing the sniffles from Scythe. He looked around the room briefly, as if to make sure nobody was nearby, before sitting beside her.
"Scythe? What's the matter?"
"Ain't.. nothin'.. Jus drop off the papers n go back t'work."
Broker tapped his chin, looking up at nothing in particular as he was in thought. He snapped his fingers once an idea had struck him.
"Hang on, Scythe! I'll be right back!" Broker hopped off the couch and strode out of her office now that he had a destination in mind. Scythe looked up from her hands, watching him leave as she wished. He'd be back; Broker always kept his word. She sighed solemnly, going back to her sulking.
Before he could even reach the destination, Dollmaker happened to walk out of the room he had in mind. Perfect! Especially since Broker had (what he could assume) enough extra funds for himself to spend. Just as Dollmaker was going to turn away, he waved her over.
She paused, looking behind her as if hoping there was someone else he was motioning at. Nobody but her and Broker stood in the hall. She reluctantly walked over to Broker, standing there without a word uttered from her dolls. Broker smiled.
"Dolly! So glad I found you. You're good at making dolls, right? Silly me. Of course you are..."
"Get on with it, Broker..." Fury spoke on her behalf, propping itself up on Dollmaker's shoulder.
Broker huffed before continuing on after being so rudely interrupted. "Ahem...! The boss is quite upset! Are you still taking commissions? I know just the way to cheer her up! I've got the funds to afford one of your dolls, think you got the time today?" He motioned to the general direction of his room with an innocent smile.
Dollmaker glanced over to where his room is, then back at Broker. Nobody in the Church had asked for a doll before besides oracle work, but she wasn't busy. With a subtle nod, Dollmaker allowed Broker to lead her into his room.
Once arriving, Broker rummaged into a couple pouches, before taking one and dropping it into her hands. Opening it, it was filled with Brokercoins. Dollmaker couldn't do anything with it, but she took it anyways. She can probably find somebody interested in buying it off her for bux. The two discussed what Broker wanted to be made and the deadline, and once it was settled, she left. Not without being given a second set of Brokercoins for the extra work that will be put into it.
It only took a few hours for Dollmaker to complete it, and just as she did, Broker walked in unannounced.
"Ah! There it is, thanks a lot Dolls." Broker's face lit up, practically snatching it right from her hands. He looked it over to make sure everything was right, and to his satisfaction, all looked well.
"Just go..." Spoke Tragedy. Given such a short deadline, Dollmaker needed to take a break for a bit, especially from Broker.
Nothing more had to be said between them now that he got what he wanted. He left her room, and marched right back into Scythe's office.
Scythe was sat in front of her desk, boots kicked up and her hat over her face, cigarette in hand. Broker stared at her for a moment too long, before gently knocking on the frame of the door. She flinched awake, her hand tilting her hat out of the way. Broker stood there, his hands behind his back. She gave him a suspicious look, her head tilting to the side.
"Broker. Whatcha want now. Yer.. supposed t'be workin'." Scythe muttered, removing her propped up legs off the desk. She was immediately shushed by Broker, watching him shake his head as he took a step forward.
"Nuh-uh! I can't leave you be when you're sulking, can I? Not me!"
"I.. got you something, spent a fortune on it! You know how Dolly's prices can be." He pulled out the dolls from behind his back, reveal it to Scythe. It was a fairly made doll of Scythe, connected to another, which is Broker, stitched together by the hand. How cute!
Scythe faltered, seeing the two dolls of them holding hands. Dollmaker made that in just a span of a few hours? Broker didn't even ask why she was all upset. She put out her cigarette, then got up from her chair, slowly making way to Broker. Gently, as if the dolls were fragile, she took them out of Broker's grasp with her prosthetic hand. She looked them over carefully, and immediately adored them.
"Ain't.. one for emotions but...—Jeez, Broker..." She wiped a tear with a huff, looking away with a smile. This means a lot to her, he could tell.
"Glad to know I did something right!" Broker felt proud of himself, not for making her tear up, no, but from comforting her.
"You want to talk about it, boss?" Broker offered with a smile.
"... I'd like that."
She held the dolls close to her chest, over her heart.
