    Pearl opened her mouth.

    Nothing. The word evaporated before it could become anything. Her jaw tightened, a small, private flash of frustration at herself, at her own inability to do this one simple thing.

    She closed her mouth again.

    The room was quiet around her. Gem wasn't moving to filling the silence, just waiting. Pearl could feel that patience like a hand held out without pressure.

    Her fingers uncurled, slowly, one at a time.

    She looked up.

    Gem's eyes were right there, steady and present. Pearl held them for a second, found the clinical register she needed.
