the field trip that wasn't... or maybe it was?

Summary:

Peter's AcaDec team has a surprise trip to none other than the famed SI. Peter however is not on the trip due to some unfortunate gunshot wounds he sustained on patrol. What he doesn't expect to see when he's recovering is his classmates in his house. People are shocked, proven wrong and some Parkner and Avengersfam happens.

OR
one of my takes on the field trip trope

Notes:

Sooo here you have it folks! The field trip trope. I absoloutly had to do this, since it's what got me into Parkner and I adore this trope. Be warned I have like zero idea about how american schools and field trips work, so all this is based on the countless fics I've read. It's also most likely not my last field trip fic, since I wanna do a couple other things with this trope. But for now, hope you enjoy this one:) It's my first multichapter fic 'cause, you know, commitment issues haha, but I'll try to post the new chapters at least once a weeek. I don't have the last two chapterrs written yet though, so we'll see.

Chapter 1

Chapter Text

Peter was laying on the school desk, his head in his hands. He stopped paying attention to what Mr. Harrington was saying about five minutes into the class. He already knew all that anyway and since he’d been working late in his lab last night he really needed to catch up on some sleep. He was exhausted and caffeine barely even worked thanks to his metabolism.
Not to mention that both Pepper and Halrey were gonna kill him if due to lack of sleep he collapsed in the middle of the day. Again. He loved them both dearly, but Peter wasn’t stupid. He wouldn't risk their wrath. Especially not Pepper’s. Oh, that was a terrifying force he hoped never to have turned on him.

Thankfully there were only a couple of minutes left until the bell rang announcing the end of the boy’s torture. Only a bit more until he could go back home to the Tower for movie night with his family. Fridays were always movie nights for the Avengers and Co. He couldn’t wait to get out of there and enjoy some time with the people he loved.

But it seemed like his annoying specimen of a teacher had other plans.

“I know you’re all excited for the weekend and can’t wait to go home, but I ask for just a minute more of your attention.” Mr. Harrington’s voice sounded through the groans let out by a room full of tired teens.

“Believe me, you’ll want to hear this.” You could practically feel the man vibrating with anticipation.

“Soooo, what do you think he’s about to tell us?” MJ snickered from somewhere to Peter’s left. “ Did he finally get a better job, and just can’t wait to tell us he’s done dealing with teenagers for the rest of his life?” she speculated. “I see no other reason in his life for such excitement.”

“I know this is very sudden, but our request for the destination of our end of the year field trip has finally been approved!” the teacher exclaimed, taking out a stack of papers from his desk drawer. That piqued the class’s interest and hushed most of the not so quiet complaining that they had to stay longer.

“However the principal and I decided that it would be even more of a treat if we kept the place we’re going to a secret until the actual event!” he started going around the room giving out the permission slips.

“The trip is next Friday, so I will need the signed permissions at the latest on next Thursday, am I understood?” at that he looked directly at Peter. He might have a slight problem with remembering things from time to time, but it wasn’t bad enough to warrant singling him out like that…. was it? “Otherwise I will sadly not be able to let you come with us. And believe me, you do not want to miss this trip.” and with that he finally let them all go.

“Where do you think the trip’s gonna be?!” Ned buzzed next to Peter. “Do you think it’ll actually be something cool or just another one of those supposedly super fun things that turn out to suck?” Peter only let out a sigh in response. As much as he loved his best friend’s curiosity and energy he didn't share it this instant for one simple reason. Peter Parker-Stark hated field trips. With his Parker Luck they somehow always ended up going south.

First the memorable Oscorp trip where he got bitten by the radioactive spider that gave him his Spider-man powers. It wouldn’t have been all bad if he hadn’t gotten sick and thought he was going to die for a week.

Then the DC AcaDeca trip where his classmates all would’ve died because of some alien tech if he hadn’t saved them.

And of course can’t forget the latest hit. Alien invasion that resulted in him involuntarily going to space, fighting that jewel-obsessed purple grape and getting blipped along with half of the world's population.

So it’s safe to say that Peter had his reasons. He could just feel that something was going to go wrong this time as well. Maybe not a world- ending, Avenger level threat, but it would be bad nonetheless.

Deciding not to dwell on what he didn’t know yet, Peter said goodbye to his two best friends and made his way over to the not-at-all-descreet black Audi waiting for him in the parking lot. It was admittedly the least flashy one of Tony Stark’s many cars, since Peter didn’t want it to be public knowledge that the billionaire had adopted him after Aunt May’s death two and a half years ago, but it was still pretty obvious that no mere teenager was being picked up in it.

But what could he do? At least he wasn’t being collected from school in one of the Iron Man suits. Yes, Tony did quite seriously suggest that at first. But he settled for having Happy drive his son home after the compelling argument that it would not only raise way too many questions, but be very impractical for both him and the teen.

“You’re late kid” Happy called out from the driver’s seat as Peter got into the back of the car. “Again” although he seemed annoyed if you listened close enough you could hear the fondness in the grumpy head of security’s voice. Not even the coldest creature could resist the charm and charisma of one Peter Parker-Stark.

“I am so sorry Mr. Hogan. Mr. Harrington wanted us to stay a bit longer to tell us about the end of the year field trip we’ll be taking next week.” Peter started explaining as Happy drove off in the direction of the Tower.

“Really? And where will you guys be going?” the driver asked curiously.

“That’s the thing, he wouldn’t tell us! Said it’d be more fun if we didn’t know where we’ll be going.” the teen rolled his eyes at the last bit. “But I already know it’ll probably be a disaster no matter where we’re going. With my luck with field trips? Even a trip to the grocery store could somehow end up being the worst day of my life.” they went on like this for the rest of the road. Peter as usual telling Happy all about his day, the other staying quiet and only occasionally asking a question or two.

As soon as he got out of the back door Peter waved goodbye to Happy and sprinted for the private elevator.

“Hello Underoos, welcome home. Would you like me to notify Boss and Potato Boy of your arrival?” FRIDAY’s Irish lilt greeted him.

“Hey, FRI! Yes, please tell them that I’m on my way right now.” Peter responded cheerily, forgetting all about the inevitable disaster the oncoming field trip would bring.

He rode the elevator all the way up to floor 97, where the Avengers’ common room was located. A few seconds later he heard a quiet ping and the doors opened to a truly unusual sight. Well, unusual to anyone who didn’t live with this bunch of superpowered idiots.

Sam and Clint were sitting on the couch playing Mario Kart and screaming at each other on full volume ( Clint was losing. Badly), Bucky stood in the kitchen making dinner for the whole team with his husband. The two super soldiers might still not be experts on how to function in the modern age, but one thing they could do was cook delicious meals.

Natasha had been sitting in the living room, enjoying watching Clint getting his ass handed to him just a moment ago, but was now strolling towards her favourite teen, having noticed his arrival the moment he stepped foot into the penthouse.

“Hello маленький паучок” she said, wrapping her arms tightly around Peter. “How was your day at school?” she let go of him to look him in the eye.

“Hi мама-паук! It was good.” he responded while giving his favourite aunt a big grin.

“Learn anything new?” she joked.

“You know I didn’t.” came the response.

“Come on then, Steve and Bucky are making dinner. I’m sure you’re starved after the whole day of wasting your time.” Nat ruffled Peter’s hair, to his immediate protests, and led him to the stools by the counter.

“Where are Dad and Harls?” the spider child asked, looking around the room and finding neither of the family members in question, already assuming they were probably working on something in Tony’s lab and lost track of time.

“Working on some ‘ground breaking discoveries’, as your father called them, in the lab.” Pepper walked into the room answering his question. She looked exhausted after the whole day of intense CEO business, but came over to greet her son anyway, planting a kiss on the top of his head.
“Actually, I was just about to ask you to go get them for dinner. Gods know you’re the only thing that can get either one of them to leave that damned room.”

“Hey! Don’t disrespect the lab, Mom! But sure, I’ll go get them right now.” Peter smiled at his second adoptive parent. He might not have hit it off with Pepper as quickly as with Tony, but after getting to know the amazing woman she was, he grew to love her as much as he would his biological mother.

Pepper gave him a glare with no real heat behind it, making the boy quicken his pace to the elevator.

“FRI, take me to Dad’s lab please.” he was moving down before he even finished forming the request, the AI already knowing where he was headed.

As the doors opened, Peter could see his Dad and boyfriend standing in the middle of the room, covered from head to toe in glitter, arguing about what went wrong here.

“I am telling you, you must've forgotten to flip the safety switch on!” Harley was accusing the billionaire.

“I did not!” Tony's offended yell sounded in the lab. “ You were the one who messed up the coding on this damned-”

“You two worked on the glitter bomb without me?!” Peter shrieked with exaggerated betrayal looking between the other two.

Both jumped up at hearing his voice, having been too engrossed in the argument to notice his arrival. Tony’s face immediately softened and a smile appeared.

“Hey kid.” he greeted his son. “How was your day?”

“Hi Dad. You know, same old same old.” Peter quipped back and looked over to the figure of Halrey sauntering towards him to envelop him in a tight hug.

“Nu-uhh, absolutely not. You’re not getting anywhere near me before you wash off the glitter!” Peter yelled, holding out a hand in front of himself to stop the southern boy from coming any closer. Tony only chuckled in the background at the sight.

“Awwe, but babeeee” the boy in question pouted at Peter, the glint of mischief clearly visible in his eyes behind the innocent facade. He started to get closer to him despite the other boy backing away and protesting loudly.

“Nooo, don’t you dare get any of that on me!” Peter tried deflecting the hug, but his boyfriend was relentless.

When Harley thought he had him, Peter jumped up sticking to the ceiling.

“Not happening, Potato Boy.”
“Oh, come on! That’s not fair! And not you too with the potato thing!” Harley complained. “Do something about your child, old man!” he turned to Tony at that.

“Sorry kid, your relationship is not my problem. Also, Roo is right. We need to get this shit off before Pepper finds out.” the man visibly shivered at the thought of his wife’s reaction to their ‘super important breakthrough’.

“That reminds me,” came the spider’s voice from above. “It was actually Mom who sent me to get you guys for dinner.”

“AND THAT WASN’T THE FIRST THING YOU SAID WHEN YOU WALKED IN HERE?!” Harley screamed, all intention of covering his boyfriend in glitter forgotten. The fear of Pepper winning any competition over what to do.

“Well, to be fair I got pretty distracted when I saw you two standing in the middle of the lab, sparkling pink.” he chuckled at the image still below of him.

He got two matching glares in return, Tony and Harley clearly not as amused as him.

“Go wash up before Mom finds you two looking like fairies from Morgan’s books.” Peter laughed while jumping off the ceiling and sprinting for the elevator, his Dad and boyfriend chasing him.

After about half an hour of very thorough showers the two dumb geniuses came into the living room still slightly sparkling. All the Avengers started cackling at the sight of them.

“What happened to you two?” Clint managed to ask between fits of laughter.

“How was it at the 3 year old’s birthday party?” Sam added, not even trying to mask his amusement.

“Both of you, shut up.” Tony glared at his teammates. “Remember that you’re living in my house and I could throw you out onto the street any day.”

“Yeah, but you wouldn’t.” both of the bird themed superheroes said at the same time. If looks could kill, they’d both be 6 feet under from how Tony was staring holes through their heads.

Peter was grinning at the situation when Harley came up to him.

“Hiya there.” his southern accent sounded in the space. “Can I get a hug now? I promise I’m mostly glitter free.” he pouted at Peter.

“C’mere.” Peter stretched out his arms for the taller boy to fall into as he sat himself next to him on the armchair. They finally wrapped their arms around each other after the whole day of not seeing the other.

“Cool it with the PDA and come for dinner, you two.” Steve called out from the kitchen.

“As if you and Bucky aren’t like ten times worse.” Harley groaned discontented and stuck his tongue out at Captain America simultaneously pulling Peter up to go eat. He might have missed Peter, but his boyfriend needed a lot of food with his enhanced metabolism so he couldn’t let him miss a meal.

“Urghhhh” the indignant sound of protest from their spider child made the whole room start laughing. But the boy got up from his spot, glaring at everyone who dared show their amusement.

“C’mon you two,” demanded Tony, having had enough of his son’s antics for one day.

All the Avengers and Pepper ( although everyone claimed she was an unofficial Avenger, the most important one even) sat down for dinner, the normal flow of conversation starting up, sometimes interrupted by a silence where everyone was eating their food. They discussed the events of the day, teased each other about trivial things and made plans for the next few days.

Peter and Tony argued over what movie to watch in the evening, the older Stark retorting to Peter’s proposition that they will NOT be watching Star Wars for the millionth time this month. The boy of course wasn’t having that, arguing that you can’t have watched the franchise too many times as his father claimed they already have months ago.

After cleaning up the dishes and finally settling on what to watch, everyone moved to the living room area of the penthouse. Nat and Wanda took an armchair with Bucky sitting on the floor in front of them, letting the two women braid his hair, Steve, Clint and Sam taking one of the couches and Tony with Pepper on one end of the other having Peter in Harley’s arms on the opposite end.

Somewhere along the movie Peter had fallen asleep on top of his boyfriend who lovingly wrapped him up in a blanket and gave everyone around them a glare, warning that if anyone dared to do anything to wake up the precious bundle in his arms, they were dead meat.

The night ended with Harley carrying Peter back to their own room after everyone else had already gone to sleep. He gently put the younger boy down, settling beside him and snuggling up to the most adorable human he had ever met.
