Work Text:
Saru had almost given up trying to find an appropriate husband for his charge; indeed, it had become a source of some despair. He would not see her unhappily wed, but for a young woman of small wealth and no family to spend her life a spinster... he would not wish it on her. Tilly is a sociable creature with much love to give. He was dreadfully afraid of one day leaving her without company, without protection, without anyone to rely on.
To see her laugh with Captain Pike, someone who respects her intelligence and appreciates her warmth, who listens to her, was a delight.
Tilly is quiet on the walk home, which is highly unusual; she has a pleased little smile on her face so Saru does not worry. Ordinarily she would be full of stories about the newest exhibits, or complaining that something was not exhibited or explained properly. To come away from the museum without something to say is almost unheard of; Captain Pike has certainly made quite an impression upon her.
Saru is not in the habit of taking anything for granted, but he feels more hope for Tilly's future comfort than he has in years.
