Summary
This is a story about surviving.
When Vi is five and Powder is one, their father leaves. After that, it is Felicia and her girls. Money is tight, life is messy, but they are okay.
Then Felicia meets Darren.
At first, he is good to them. He makes Felicia laugh, helps with Powder and never tries to replace Vi’s father.
For a few years, he is just Darren.
Then he starts drinking.
Slowly, the house changes. Arguments get louder. Doors get blocked. Things get thrown. Felicia says she is fine when she isn’t. Powder learns when to stay upstairs.
Vi learns everything else.
By fifteen, she knows how to read Darren’s moods and when to get Powder away. School is no better. She is bullied, isolated and struggling with coming out.
So Vi decides she doesn’t need anyone.
Then Caitlyn Kiramman sits beside her in history.
Tall. Dark blue hair. Ridiculously blue eyes. Far too proper for Vi’s liking and completely unimpressed by every attempt Vi makes to push her away.
Caitlyn should take the hint.
She doesn’t.
Surviving the bad parts is one thing.
Learning what to do when something good finds you is another.
