Work Text:
Seungmin blinks awake and wonders what the hell could have woken him from a dead sleep at sometime way too late. It’s very quickly answered by the feelings of being watched and a heavy sigh and some murmuring. Seungmin sits up and holds back a yawn, rubbing at his eyes.
There’s a figure in his doorway. Two actually. Both he would recognize drugged and crazy. Jeongin and Minho. Jeongin sighs (again, it was him the first time), his hair messy and imperfect and Seungmin kind of wants to run his hands through it (and maybe pull a little). The desire is overshadowed by the fact that his little fox let a demon into the dorm.
“Hyung. What the hell-?” Seungmin can barely start before Minho is flicking on his light, making both Jeongin and Seungmin wince. “No.”
“Seungminnie~” Minho croons. “C’mon, late night snack.”
His hyung is way too wired for whatever time at night it is. He wonders if this is late night or early morning. Seungmin narrows his eyes, both to glare and because of the light.
“Jeonginnie, why’d you let it in?” Minho starts on some tangent about being called an it but Seungmin’s just staring at Jeongin’s sleepy face as he shrugs.
“Wouldn’t take no for an answer. I threatened to call campus security and he laughed at me.” Jeongin slumps against his doorframe and yawns. Seungmin feels the way his expression softens.
“Go to sleep, Jeonginnie. I’ll deal with the demon.”
Seungmin is glad that Minho has his face in his Twitter profile and that they interact regularly or Jeongin would have really called security. Poor Minho would have to deal with Seungmin laughing at him for the rest of time if that happened. He watches Jeongin nod and walk back into his room while Minho watches him.
“What was that.” Minho states, states because he knows already, as he shuts the door carefully behind him.
“Jeongin.” Seungmin swings his legs over the edge of his bed and mentally searches his closet for the coat he wants to wear out. It should be on the far right. “Hyung-”
“Him?” Seungmin sighs, he really doesn’t want to get up and get his own coat. Minho should do it. He woke him up. “It’s been a month?”
“Grab my coat, please? Right side, the grey one.” Seungmin stands and stretches. “And, yes, it’s Innie. And I am aware of how time passes. I spend a lot of time with my roommate, hyung.”
Minho hums and grabs the wrong coat. Entirely on purpose, too. Seungmin just sighs; he should have known. Minho seems to be thinking hard, though. Seungmin has to snatch it from Minho to stop him from fiddling with the hood.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” finally slips out of Minho’s mouth. He knew this was going to come up. He spent a few days dodging the conversation and his hyung is too persistent for that. Any time they saw each other. Even when they weren’t supposed to. He’d get a text or Minho would appear behind him like some sort of entity. Asking the same question. Who? Seungmin almost wants to say that this topic is why Minho isn’t passed out in his own bed.
“Because. I’m not sure–” He lowers his voice when he opens his door. Jeongin doesn’t always fall asleep right away. “–how real the feeling is or if I want to do anything about it.”
Minho follows silently up until they’re slipping out of the dorm. He only speaks after Seungmin has double tugged on the door to ensure it latched.
“The feeling is real and you’re going to do something about it,” he says confidently. Seungmin blinks five times in rapid succession, looking out into the dark. Then he turns to Minho and glares. The fucker isn’t even looking. Too busy taking a photo.
“What does that mean?”
“Didn’t know how badly you wanted to or if you were going to try and join the baseball team. You wanted it badly and you did try. Failed, but tried. Weren’t sure if you really loved your computer shit and if that’s what you really wanted to go to school for. Well, you’re here. Usually, you have a feeling you might want something and then you do.” He watches Minho post the photo as he talks. He feels his own phone go off when the photo is actually posted. He watches Minho pocket the phone and walk along like he’s talking bullshit.
“This crush isn’t a sport or school.” Seungmin takes his phone out and likes the post, not bothering to reply.
“But you think it’s possible so it is. And you don’t back down from trying.” The convenience store is in sight, purple and green glow making it clear where and what it is.
Seungmin sighs. This conversation is clearly over, Seungmin can tell as soon as Minho pushes the door open and changes his entire demeanor. He’s never liked being honest or entirely clear. Seungmin picks through their conversation while Minho rambles loudly about the guy he keeps seeing around campus. Minho sounded confident when he declared that Seungmin would do something about it. It. A crush he doesn’t even know he has for sure.
Minho’s… sort of right. Innie isn’t a sport or a college major. But both were important to him. That was likely what Minho was getting at. Seungmin likes to pretend to be indecisive with important things. He likes to fool himself into thinking that he needs more time to think. It came up with smaller things before, going out or deciding what to wear. He does still remember the first time Minho slapped the back of his head because it was when he said he wanted to think more about trying out for the sport.
“Are you even listening?” Minho stops so suddenly that Seungmin doesn’t have time to side step him like he usually does. He slams into Minho’s back causing him to drop whatever he was holding. An energy drink and a couple simple snacks. Seungmin holds back a laugh at both Minho’s question and the cashier’s tired sigh.
“No,” he says simply. Now side stepping to browse more of the snacks. “And put that drink back it’s–” He pulls out his phone. “–2 in the morning.”
“Kim Seungmin, I am telling you very important information.”
“I do not think a retelling of every time you saw your campus crush is important, Minho-ssi",” says the girl behind the register, looking like she wants kick Minho out but doesn’t have a valid reason to. Seungmin thinks it’d be funny if she did and grins at her when she glances at him.
“I’ve heard it all already, too,” he sighs with a dramatic flair that Minho can only blame himself for. Minho wacks the back of his head with a family size chip bag. It starts a chain reaction that ends with Minho energy drink on the ground again and Seungmin holding nothing he grabbed and only the chips. They get sternly told to pay and get out.
And they do. Darting out the door and Seungmin almost feels 15 again, running around after dark with his hyung to protect him. Not that Seungmin needs it anymore and he won’t say it out loud or even admit it to himself, but he has missed his hyung, his closest thing to an actual brother, while he was away the past two years.
They end up in an empty park near campus. Seungmin pushes Minho while he’s running around and it ends the way it did before. Minho twisting fast enough that he could catch himself, but instead choosing to take Seungmin down with him. Seungmin pushes him off and settles their bag of things between them. Except the energy drink. Minho can have that when they see each other in the actual morning.
“How long do you think it’ll take?” Seungmin asks during a brief moment of silence. He sees Minho glance over at him out of the corner of his eye. He tilts his head and studies Seungmin, which honestly is smart. He’s thinking too hard about the even the smallest ways he likes Jeongin.
“Longer than you want, probably. Or maybe if I smack you, you’ll ask him out tomorrow.” Seungmin throws a chip at Minho’s face. Tomorrow is way too soon. Minho was also right earlier. He has only known Jeongin for a little over a month. That’s likely not enough time to actually fall in love with someone. And it would be for love if he asked Jeongin out. He doesn’t want to date without the end goal being forever.
