The deep ends (or a story of the long forgotten)

Summary:

New Achievement! I forgot woopsy
Well actually you forgot!
You're the first Crawler this season that managed to get their memory wiped out completely.
...
One of Carls plans goes south. He and Donut get seperaten and a magical attack messes up his head.
Now he can't remember a thing.

Notes:

This is set during book 5 chapter 5.

I thought about the best canon event that could give me an excuse to delete Carls memory.
The introduction of the hunters and Carl's near death gave me exactly that.

I tried to write this in the style of the books and it was really interesting.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter Text

I hadn't expected my plan to play out perfectly.

My plans never did.

I had to admit that teleporting straight to the main city of the sixth floor in an attempt to blow up the entire thing and kill as many hunters as possible maybe hadn't been my greatest plan.

We managed to blow a part of the town and get away from the main street but fully escaping was another matter.

And having to fight alone, without Donut by my side, was even worse.

My health started plummeting rapidly and I hit one healing scroll and potion after the next.

I tried desperately not to go unconscious but it was becoming harder with every passing second that ticket down.

I was hit with so many debuffs that I could see the seconds passing depicted by the timers and info boxes everywhere.

My protective shell wouldn't be available for at least 7 more hours and I had no way of protecting myself.

My gear usually held up strong but with all the debuffs and injuries it wasn't enough.

I loaded my xistera with another bomb and tossed it in the approximate direction of my opponent. I couldn't see if it hit or not.

I was running as fast as I could. Pushing through the pain of my healing body, trying to reach the border of the village.

Once I managed to get out, the hunters shouldn't be able to attack me anymore. That was my only chance.

The purple dot that had shown me the location of my pursuer wasn't visible anymore.

I tried to use my ping spell but my mana was filling up far to slow.

If I can't see them they don't deserve to see me either.

I threw a smoke curtain in front of me while running towards the edge of town.

The heavy fog flowing out of it obscured my vision and with it hopefully the one of my hiden opponent.

My health was going into the red again and I hit another healing potion.

Damnit.

I couldn't deal with this alone.

I shouldn't have sent Donut away.

If she was here right now she could heal me up and we could make a plan to escape.

No she couldn't, she would be dead by now.

Exactly.

If I was entirely honest with myself and looked at this in a rational manner I knew that it had been the right decision to send her ahead out of the city and to the nearest safe room.

I had tasked Bomo the rock monster to carry her and bring her to safety while I tried to distract the hunters that where still following us.

That left me alone out here fighting.

But at least Donut was safe... Hopefully... Surely.

I mentally typed in my chat.

Carl: Donut have you reached a safe room already?

Donut, of course, didn't answer.

Her cockroach skill had saved her once again from dying on the spot several minutes ago.

But it hadn't turned off the debuff of the attack that hit her and made her unconscious.

The image of her small limp form held carefully by these big rocky hands flashed before my mind.

I wouldn't let anything happen to her.

I knew she was strong but I had that even stronger urge to protect her.

I heard a whoosh coming straight at me.

An other of these god damn enchanted bolts pierced through my cloak and directly into the flesh of my shoulder.

It hurt like shit but made no significant difference in my current state.

I had already been hit with several sore debuffs.

They made everything hurt like crazy.

I gritted my teeth trying to push through the pain. I tossed another explosive right behind me into the direction the bolt had been shot from.

It exploded in the air behind me, the invisible opponent must have deflected my attack before it could hit the target.

I felt the hot air of the explosion on my back.

I ran even faster now, sprinting past the scattered houses of the town towards the forest.

The moment I crossed the border and left the town all remaining dots on my map snapped away.

I suspected the town to be surrounded by a protection of sorts. I didn't know if weapons were able to fire beyond the town.

I hoped not.

I didn't dare to slow down and kept running, searching for the nearest safe room on my map. I had to get to safety. Fast.

And then one last other bolt was flying directly towards me. It must have somehow managed to cross through the protective border.

I heard it coming and tried to dodge it. But I was to slow.

I had turned my head and could see it hurtling directly toward my head.

My certainly not that heroic looking attempt at dodging the bolt made me slam hard on the ground.

I squeezed my eyes shut, waiting for the piercing pain that would certainly come once the bolt pierced my skull.

One second, two...

The pain never came and no other attacks followed. The attacker must have given up. Or they where sure that whatever this attack was, was going to kill me anyways.

I slowly opened my eyes again.

The bolt hadn't done any damage, it just bonked against my head and evaporated into a sparkling orange cloud.

My mind raced as I tried to remember a certain passage from the cookbook about spells and enchantments.

There was a section about some pretty strong and dangerous ones and I had hoped I wouldn't have to encounter any of them anytime soon.

If I was correct about this I was completely fucked. Even if I managed to survive this.

I reacted quickly pulling up my chat sending several a messages to Mordecai.

Then I opened my scratch pad and frantically started writing down notes.

This was all I could do.

The cloud slowly enveloped my entire head.

I couldn't see anything anymore except for a milky orange.

I tried my best not to breathe any of it in.

But I could feel the magic slowly working it's way into my skin even though I held my breath and my mouth stayed closed.

Fuck!

I genuinely expected the cloud to burn in my eyes or do some secondary damage as well.

But nothing.

It actually felt quite nice.

The pain started to ease a little bit.

I started to feel dizzy.

My mind filled with a foggy feeling that numbed everything.

The constant rushing in the back of my mind settled and everything went quiet.

It was a nice feeling that I hadn't felt for a long long time.

I felt at ease.

New Achievement! I forgot whoopsy

Well actually you forgot!

You're the first Crawler this season that managed to get their memory wiped out completely.

Don't we all wish we could forget?

No lying awake in bed overthinking all the stupid and embarrassing things you did as a teenager.

Forget about the terrible people you wish you'd have never met?

About the horrors the world has to offer?

Well now you got just that.

The positive news is that you're at least able to read this so your brain is not in total shambles.

Now let's see You either did this on purpose in wich case I can only say it's propably better this way.

Your life must have been a real shit if you wanted to forget so badly.

There's also the possibility that this was merely an accident.

Then I'm sorry for you.

(that's what I could say but to be honest I don't feel sorry. This will be a lot of fun for the audience)

your survival chances just dropped under 30%

Your mind is propably spinning with a thousand questions right now.

Who am I?

How will I survive this?

What will I eat for breakfast?

You know what, you'll figure it out eventually

Reward: You've received a Platinum Wiped Mind Box

Notes:

Thank you so much for hopping onto the ride that this fic will (hopefully) be.

I started writing this on a really long and boring flight after I just started reading book 5.
I don't know when or if I'll write more chapters.

I love Dungeon Crawler Carl so much!!!!
My favorite part of this was writing the ai. I hope I can squeeze some more descriptions into the next chapters.

If you liked anything of what I wrote consider leaving a comment. They'll definitely fuel my motivation to write more XD
