Work Text:
“You do not need to fuss,” Watson said, watching as Holmes fluffed the pillows he had arranged around him. “I will be fine after some rest.”
They had just completed an intense case the day before and Watson had admittedly slightly overdone things in his excitement to accompany Holmes. He had awoken quite sore and Holmes had taken it upon himself to fuss over him.
“Nonsense, Watson. You are my friend. I am glad to assist you while you are ill.”
“I am not ill,” Watson protested.
Despite his protest, he could not help but feel pleased. They had been close friends for decades and helping each other had always been a part of their friendship. Watson always enjoyed accompanying Holmes on his cases and assisting Holmes in other areas as well. Holmes often neglected himself while working and was prone to injury and Watson was always glad to care for him.
Holmes had never hesitated to assist Watson as well. When they had initially become friends, Watson had been in poor health and often needed Holmes’ assistance. Holmes always seemed glad to help him. Over time, Watson’s health had improved, but he had never fully recovered from the injuries he had sustained in war.
“I must disagree with your assessment,” Holmes said.
He began piling blankets around Watson, arranging them so that he could still use his arms. Watson had not noticed how chilled he was and was glad for the warmth. Perhaps Holmes was correct that he was ill.
“Drink your tea, my dear Watson,” Holmes said.
Holmes pushed the cup closer to Watson along with a plate of biscuits. Watson picked it up and took a sip, soothed by the warmth. Watson had overexerted himself, but he could relax now while his friend took care of him.
