Feathers to Hold Gently Yet Firm

Summary:

Apo decides to help Owen sleep by bringing him into her dreamscape.

-

Owen hadn't gotten a good night's rest, recently. Apo could easily tell. The slight jolts up when someone would speak, his growing eyebags, his slower walk… Maybe it was the blessing of Morpheus that allowed her to connect all these dots.

Or maybe Apo had been paying significantly more attention to the little things Owen would do. The way a smirk cracked on her face before saying a joke. The angle in which she dragged her staff to feel the ground. The exact tone she laughed in, and what each one meant.

Notes:

Work Text:

Owen hadn't gotten a good night's rest, recently. Apo could easily tell. The slight jolts up when someone would speak, his growing eyebags, his slower walk… Maybe it was the blessing of Morpheus that allowed her to connect all these dots.

Or maybe Apo had been paying significantly more attention to the little things Owen would do. The way a smirk cracked on her face before saying a joke. The angle in which she dragged her staff to feel the ground. The exact tone she laughed in, and what each one meant.

Of course, they loved all their feather holders. They were just… A little distracted, they supposed. Which was kind of inconvenient in their position, but they digressed.

Either way, Apo knew Owen needed better sleep. And she remembered the conversation in which Owen told her his mind is clear in her dreamscape. Owen spoke of how good it felt. How calming it was.

Apo would bring her there again.

Owen stepped up to the main platform, dragging his staff across the ground more than usual. "Apo?" He stopped for a second. "Am I in the dreamscape again?"

Apo nodded, despite her not being able to see it. "Yeah."

Owen was quiet; a little confused. "Why'd you bring me here?" she said in a small voice.

"You need sleep, Owen," Apo said.

"I've– I've been getting sleep!" Owen defended pointlessly.

Apo looked Owen up then down. "It's clearly not good enough. Come here, you need more rest," Apo repeated.

"O-okay. Where are you…?" Owen started walking and moving his staff again.

"Oh, that's right," Apo said, and quickly grabbed his hand, walking towards a pillar for them both to rest on. "I forgot you can't see in here– Or, remember, I guess."

"Ah, thank you, Apo," Owen said, a smile upon her face.

"No," Apo stopped at a pillar. "Don't say thank you. It's nothing."

Owen nodded. Apo crouched then sat next to the pillar, and Owen glided down with them. The woman got close to Apo, silently cuddling up next to them like it was second nature.

Apo smiled with the warmth of another body, wrapping her arms around her.

They didn't even need words.

At some point, Apo felt him shiver. She frowned, "Come sit on my lap."

Owen was, in fact, very sleepy, and too tired to question Apo. She made a sound of approval before sitting on her lap and getting comfortable. Apo wrapped her arms and wings around her, and Owen did not shiver again that night.

Apo ran her fingers through Owen's soft hair, and he snuggled into the cloth of her top until she finally felt him fall asleep.

Apo did not sleep, to keep the dreamscape up.

But she did rest. Exceptionally well, in fact.

And she could only hope Owen did, too.
