An Shiraishi would consider herself lucky.
Ever since she was small; wether it would be the store having just last of her favourite drink, or a roof tile falling right before her feet, just about missing her. She never stepped into a puddle unless she wanted to, not once did the bus escape her, she was never late when it truly mattered. Even her hair didn't need styling, falling the way she wanted with a few simple brush strokes, and stepping outside the house she'd often find a 'lucky penny' laying at her doorstep. Sometimes it was miraculous, sometimes almost absurd.
Her dad sometimes joked that it was as if an angel stood by her side at all times, protecting her from any misfortune; An laughed it off these days, but when she was still young she'd sometimes imagine what it would be like if an actual divine being spent its time protecting her. How cool would that be! But now she had more important things to focus on. Like Vivid Bad Squad and her amazing partner, Kohane Azusawa. Singing partner, of course, best friend and nothing else! Yet she caught herself so pulled towards the blonde girl- but An shook it off as simple admiration.
Because Kohane really was like an angel. An could never get tired of that gorgeous voice, getting better and more powerful the longer they practiced by each other's side. She could watch for hours how those beautiful brown eyes glinted under stage lights, how…divine Kohane looked by her side; and then the music started, and An's body filled with the familiar, addicting adrenaline of performing and all on her mind was how her voice mixed with Kohane created a duet that felt so…natural.
To say An was distracted was an understatement. Practicing alone under the now closed Weekend Garage she felt like something along her was missing; better, she knew exactly what, or rather who, it was, and she couldn't help but drift off to thinking about her best friend again, music slipping into not more than a simple background to her thoughts.
It was impatience, maybe, as she waited for the meet-up she scheduled with Kohane, later, at the mall. Akito and Toya were going to be there too, she supposed, but that's not what's important, was it?
The excitement of the long awaited hangout manifested into a dream that night, in which she heard Kohane call it a date. An's neck burnt with blush at the idea.
_____
To the disappointment of the small crowd that now surrounded her, An's phone rang with a quiet alarm, and looking at the digital clock it was time to get going. She thanked and waved at the people, before packing up all the equipment back behind the closed door of the café behind her, making sure everything was in its place, before practically running back outside, throwing only a quick "I'm leaving!" as she shut the door behind her.
An's feet carried her lightly along the way to the mall. The tall building started peeking out behind shorter houses, more and more anticipation filling An's chest. Of course it technically wasn't anything special, she saw Kohane almost every day. But still, no matter how often she'd always feel the same thrill at seeing her best friend, she'd always want more whenever they'd have to part ways in the evening. Time with her best friend passed for An so fast.
The next seconds passed by even quicker.
An was careful; the light was green when she crossed the road, she even looked both ways. Who could've predicted that a reckless driver would speed out from around a corner exactly at that moment, disregarding his own red light……and passing by, missing An by just a few inches.
It was as if an invisible force pushed her forward, jumping out from in front of the vehicle and stumbling onto the sidewalk. An's ears filled with the sound of her own heartbeat as panic and adrenaline mixed in her brain, barely working yet reeling at the same time.
She lost her balance, one of her foot catching at the curb. An was ready to accept her fate, to greet the concrete face first, but…someone caught her?
Slightly dizzied up, An looked up, ready to mouth a shaken "thank you"— but the sight left her speechless.
The hands holding her by her arms felt warm, the figure leaning over her looking so…godly. An's whole weight was pressed agaisnt the soft clothes on the figure's chest, yet they seemed not to struggle at all. An didn't want to get up; or maybe it was just her legs feeling weak.
Blond hair fell over the girl's shoulders, framing her face, delicate eyes focused on An. Black haired girl's heart skipped a beat at the soft look, the…divinity she felt emanating from her saviour. Sun beams fell onto the smooth pink dusting her skin, catching in the lashes laying on her skin, looking almost like a halo behind her. An could swear she could see gorgeous, marble white wings coming from behind the mysterious' girls shoulders, the long and beautiful feathers catching the sun in rainbow strokes.
She reminded An of Kohane, was her last thought, before her eyes slipped closed.
"An-chan…! An-chan!"
An opened her eyes slowly, the sun blinding her. After coming back to consciousness she took a moment to comprehend her surroundings; she was laying on the ground, she supposed, cold under her torso and legs. But her head laid on something soft. And warm.
Having opened her eyes she was greeted by…Kohane. The worried look on the blonde's face softened into a relieved smile when she met An's gaze, and An couldn't help but smile back at the sight. Kohane's hand pushed some bangs from An's eyes, the touch of soft fingers against her skin making An blush again.
"Are you okay…?" Kohane asked carefully, her voice a little shaky. An could tell she was worried…how long was she out anyway?
An took a second to think back. She didn't feel any pain anywhere; the stranger catching her earlier stopping her from getting hurt. She nodded. "I'm…okay, yes."
Her thoughts flooded with the idea of what happened earlier. Was it a mere hallucination? Dream? But she could still feel the warmth lingering on her shoulders where she was held. Or maybe it was Kohane's own hand?-
Oh god. Kohane was so close. Was she- was An laying on her lap? Her face turned terribly red, and she sat up quickly, startling pretty much both of them.
"I— I'm glad to hear," Kohane said softly, hands lingering in air uselessly. She folded them in her lap. Kohane smiled at An, her lashes falling gently upon her cheeks, sun catching in her hair in an almost holy glow. An gulped, not able to turn her eyes away.
Maybe she really had a guardian angel by her side.
