Work Text:

1 — The Last Voyage of the Harpy Express

When Kirsty opens her eyes, takes a peek at her paper and sees big, green letters spelling civilian, she doesn't know whether to feel pleased or disappointed.

On one hand, she doesn't have to lie to her friends and kill them! On the other hand, she doesn't get to lie to her friends and kill them.

"Did you get the gun?" Ravs asks, leaning against the bar as he sips an old fashioned. Everyone else has scattered to other parts of the train, leaving them both alone here.

"I didn't," she sighs, sprawling on the counter. "Did you get the gun?"

"Nah." Despite this, he grins. Then, she hears a jingle. "I got the keys, though."

"Ohhh, let's go!" Kirsty smiles. She locks eyes with Ravs, a mischievous smile on both of their faces. "You wanna hide in a room and scare people?"

"Oh, I am so down," he laughs. "Do you have room one? Because I don't, and two people share it."

"That means two people that can walk in," Kirsty finishes explaining for him, delighted. She checks the tag on her keys while she gets up from he stool. "No, I'm on room five. Bummer."

"That's one of the shitty ones, right?"

"Yep. Good thing I got you then," she teases, bumping her shoulder with Ravs'. She allows him to lead the way.

The pair giggle as they approach the twin cabin, and Kirsty would normally be more cautious, but since they find nobody on the way, she lets herself loosen up a little.

Once they get there—not getting their directions wrong for once—, Ravs opens the door for her and gestures for her to enter.

"Ladies first." He winks

"Ooh, thank you good sir." Stepping inside, the room is as pristine as it always is at the start of these games. Since she needs to take a nap, Kirsty takes the liberty of flopping down face first into the gigantic bed without fearing the presence of a scorpion. It's way too early for someone to have sneaked in and planted one, surely.

As she blinks away seconds later, Ravs locks the door behind him, already giggling like a child. He pockets the keys.

"Oh right, this is the huge bed!" He throws himself at it, uncaring about crushing Kirsty. The woman exclaims in protest, although her laughter takes over any irritation in her voice. They shift, choosing to sit down with their backs to the headboard.

"I don't think I've ever gotten conductor," Kirsty muses. "Only vigilante and killer."

"Not even coroner?" Ravs wonders. "Or jester?"

"Nope. I guess you could say I'm a classic girl." She shrugs. Yeah, the new roles they added are cool and all, but Kirsty enjoys the simplicity of the civilian/vigilante/killer dynamic.

When they came in they didn't bother to turn the lights on, so now they remain in darkness. It would scare her if she was with anyone else. Not Ravs, though—at least not when he's the confirmed key guy. Well- he could be lying. After all, this could simply be his room and he's waiting to kill her. Or maybe not!

"Should we hide somewhere?" Ravs suggests after some idle chatter. "I feel like it's not scary if people come into the room and we're just having a slumber party in the dark."

"I mean, we could either hide in the shower or sit on the couch in front of the door," Kirsty says thoughtfully, weighting both options.

"I like both options." Ravs nods devilishly. "The concept of someone coming in and we're just there with our evil smiles…"

"We have been expecting you, Duncan…" Kirsty crackles maniacally in example. It quickly dissolves into genuine laughter.

"Why is Duncan the victim in this scenario?" Ravs exclaims, clearly amused.

"Are you telling me Duncan wouldn't be the perfect victim?"

Ravs pauses.

"Y'know what? That's fair."

So that's how they find themself in the bathroom. Kirsty would like to say that it's a tight squeeze, but it's really not. You could probably fit all eight of them in the room. They wouldn't have much room for personal space, but they'd fit.

Since the shower hasn't been turned on this round, she and Ravs are completely dry, as is the floor, so there's no danger of slipping. It's underwhelming, and frankly a little boring, too. They barely speak, and when they do it's in inaudible whispers to not get caught. They giggle—a lot—at the start. However, the excitement and fun of the situation slowly withers away. It's quite awkward, actually.

"Does nobody want to sleep in the luxurious room?" Ravs complains under his breath.

"Either that or we're the last ones alive," Kirsty suggests.

Idle conversation reaches them through the walls. Ok, so maybe not.

Actually-

"Oh my god, are the coming in here?" Kirsty whisper-shouts, panicked all of a sudden.

"I think so!" Ravs smiles.

They stay in the shadows, tucked away from the door (which, by the way, why is the door to the shower completely see through?) as the door to the room slides open.

"I just need a quick nap," Briony reassures her companion, giggling. "I've just been running around up and down the train, getting drinks and food but I didn't realize how tired I was until I hallucinated Lewis holding a body bag!"

"Happens to the best of us," Rythian chuckles. "At least it wasn't anything threatening that you saw."

"Yeah, it's really scary when you turn around and suddenly your friend's holding a fucking crowbar."

Their chuckle masks the rustling of sheets as Briony presumably lays down to recharge her task bar.

"Did we walk past any bodies at all, by the way?" She asks sleepily. "I'm afraid I'm at the point where I can't see them any more."

"Nah, it was all empty," Rythian replies.

"Mm. That's weird. D'you think they've all been killed already?"

Kirsty slowly crawls over to the door, ready to jump out and scare the lights out of her friends. She gestures for Ravs to follow, and he does.

"I don't think so, no. You're gonna be the first." Shling.

Oh fuck. Their eyes widen.

In the bedroom, Briony gasps in shock, frantically getting off the bed and stumbling to the floor. Kirsty and Ravs lock eyes, unsure about what to do. Should they jump in? Try to run and warn someone? It's not like they can save Briony!

But… Briony is literally Kirsty's wife! She can't betray her like that!

Before she has time to think about the consequences of her actions, Kirsty jumps forward and opens the door.

A gunshot rattles the room.

Kirsty stands there, dumbfounded, Ravs behind her equally as surprised.

Briony stands at the foot of the bed, gun clutched in both hands, and Rythian's body slumped over on the floor in front of her.

"How did you guys get in here!" Briony questions.

"I'm the… the conductor," Ravs explains, a little dazed.

"We heard the knife," Kirsty interrupts. "Did Rythian try to kill you?"

"Yes!" She shouts, distressed. She finally lowers the gun. "I was just taking my lil nap, and then all of a sudden he says this menacing thing and I see him raising a knife from out of nowhere! God, how the heck did I manage to kill him?"

"You got one of the killers!" Kirsty celebrates, stepping forward and wrapping Briony in her arms. The woman is clearly traumatized. "Let's go!"

"That was some incredible reaction time, Briony!" Ravs encourages, joining the group hug.

"You're the vigilante, correct?" She asks.

"Um. Yes." Briony blinks, still confused, but leans into the hug. "I spawned in with the gun. I kept it to myself, so Rythian didn't see it coming."

"Oh, good job!" Kirsty congratulates, leaning back but still keeping her arms on her friend. "Come on, let's go tell everyone we're a killer down!"

2 — Two Rooms and a Boom

"Briony, do you wanna go to the meeting room?" Zylus asks. And oh, he says it so nicely that she can't refuse him, surely!

"Sure!" She smiles, ignoring everyone else's protest about keeping their respective teams quiet and worrying about the conman. She only cares about one thing and one thing only: reuniting with her love—whoever that might be—and dying together. She doesn't care about none of this blue team-red team stuff!

"Do you wanna go full balls in and share roles or do you just want to share teams?" Zylus asks as they settle on their respective chairs.

"Let's go all in! I'm down!" Briony smiles. She's got nothing to hide!

"Alright, let's do this." He grins, flicking his lever. Briony does the same.

In bold blue letters, the word conman stares back at her.

"Ohh, you're the man that scams people!" She exclaims.

"So that's why you didn't care!" Zylus laughs in reply. "You just wanna find your Romeo!"

"That's right, baby!"

"Well, I don't think it's anyone from here," he begins thoughtfully. "So it's someone from the other room. I could send you over to the other side."

"Wait, are you the supervisor guy from our room?" Briony gasps.

"I am, yeah!" Zylus smiles. "I don't mind helping you out."

"I'd really appreciate it, thank you." She has such good friends!

So that's how Briony finds herself being sent away to the other group, waving goodbye to the people in her room and passing by Boba as she's sent away too.

"Hello, gamers!" She greets. "Give me all the gossip from this room because. let me tell you-" Briony lowers her voice into a conspiratorial whisper- "there's not much going on in the other room."

"Well, tell us about you, Briony," Nilesy demands. Briony spots the supervisor badge, and she internally groans. Of course they gave it to Nilesy!

"I don't think I will, actually," she slyly grins, crossing her arms. "I'm a lover, not a fighter."

"Come here, my love," Kirsty encourages with a giggle, gesturing towards the meeting room while also stretching one hand for Briony to take. "Surely you don't mind spilling some gossip with your wife, right?"

"Oh no, can't say no to the wife!" Briony agrees much to everyone else's dismay.

"Of course she folds when Kirsty says something," Ben teases.

"You know what they say!" Briony exclaims. "Happy wife, happy life!"

"You're just jealous you don't have a wife," Kirsty points out, smug.

Whatever Ben replies with an overly offended tone is lost due to the barrier containing sound inside the meeting room.

"Alright, what do you have for me, my dear?" Briony hums, plopping her butt down on one of the chairs.

"Not much, I'm afraid," Kirsty answers. "Any gossip from the other room?"

"They think the bomber is here," she comments offhandedly. "Do you know who it is?"

"I don't, no," Kirsty sighs.

That's when they flick the lever.

"Oh my god- my love!" Briony shouts in elation.

"There's no way!" Kirsty is giggling.

Briony does the normal thing you do when you realize that your wife is your soulmate—she jumps over the table to crash into her and trap her in a bear hug as they fall to the ground.

"I can't believe this!"

"I know, right!"

They lock eyes, which are barely open from their grins, and Briony knocks her head into Kirsty's. It hurts, but the excitement dulls it.

Alas, Briony has found her Romeo! Love does win!

("Oh, I think they're Romeo and Juliet!" Ben gasps as he watches his friends shout wordlessly and Briony catapult herself over the table.

"You don't say," Nilesy says. Despite his dull tone, he's smiling. "None of you happen to be the bomber, right?"

"I'm team blue," Ben reminds him.

"I'm the blue spy, you know this," Ose reminds them. "You conned me, Nilesy."

"Right, I did do that.")

3— Blood On The Clocktower

"Hello, Kirsty." Lewis' voice startles her where she sits in front of the fireplace, her face shoved into her notebook.

"Uh, hello?" She greets, sitting up.

"I bet you're wondering why I came to visit you," he states.

"I sure am, yeah," Kirsty laughs, confused. What the hell is going on? "I already used my once per game ability."

"You did, yes," he confirms. "That's not why I came."

"… Ok?"

"Kirsty. You are now evil," Lewis tells her.

"Huh." She blinks.

"Do you know what has happened?" Lewis asks.

"Um. No?" She laughs again, even more confused. "I'm evil?"

"You are now the evil nightwatchman, yes," he confirms.

"Ok." Kirsty nods, dazed.

"Goodnight." With that, Lewis is out the door before she gets the chance to say it back.

…

"Good, morning, everyone!" Lewis smiles at the array of people sitting in the town square. "In the night, Tom died."

"Oh, noooo," Kirsty mourns alongside the rest of her friends. By now, both Tom and Ravs have been killed by the demon.

"You have five minutes to chat. Good luck." He doesn't linger, instead banishing to spy on them.

Before Kirsty has time to blink, Briony is leaning on her chair.

"Shall we have a little chat?" She suggests, blinking up at her with a sweet smile.

"Of course!" Kirsty gets up. "Where can we go?"

"Let's head to the garden!" Briony takes her hand and gently drags her, leaving their friends mingling with one another and splitting off into their own chats.

As soon as they cross into the building, Briony turns to her, holding both of her hands in hers.

"Well, hello there, my evil wife," she greets maliciously, descending into maniacal crackles when she spots the shock in Kirsty's face.

"You turned me evil?" She exclaims.

"I did! I'm the- the minion with the word!" Briony explains. Ah, the mezephelis! Or- you know, however you say it. It's a hard word!

"Ohhhh, I forgot that was on the script!" Kirsty pulls out her notebook, noting down this discovery. "Wait, who's our demon?"

"It's Mara, she's the ojo," Briony informs.

"Ohhh, that makes sense." She nods. "I was the spent nightwatchman."

"That's perfect!" Her friend gasps, delighted. "You did you choose?"

"Zoey, she can clear me." Kirsty pauses. "Dude, I was so confused when Lewis visited last night."

"I can imagine!"

"What did I say?" She wonders.

"The word is buzzer," Briony comments. "That's why I started talking about Got Talent."

"Oh, I said gold buzzer!" Kirsty gasps. "Briony, you genius!"

"Thank you, my dear," Briony preens. "We should probably split up."

"Yep, I'll see if I can chat to Ravs." She stops before leaving, giving Briony's cheek a little peck. "Let's go win this, my evil wife!"

"Whoo!"
