Resilient Refraction (Working Title)

Summary:

Sonic and Shadow’s blooming relationship is forced to take a back seat when Amy, Rouge, and Metal Sonics arrive on Earth. Amy seeks help from her childhood friend, Sonic, on finding a cure for the Metal Virus that has taken over her world. Meanwhile, Neo Metal Sonic has brought the Metal Virus to Earth in hopes to infect more creatures and one of them is Sonic himself.
When Shadow hears about Sonic’s condition he rushes to his side and is willing to risk anything to save him, even if it means his own life.

Or: Shadow gets jealous and huffy about Amy getting Sonic’s attention, and Sonic gets the Metal Virus. Drama, action, and then Sonadow fluffy fluff. Not canon accurate in a lot of ways.

This is part 2 for Spiny Sentinels. Recommended to read part 1 first.

Notes:

Eyy! Back at it again with the pain and fluffy Sonic/Shadow content! I'm not sure how often this will be updated but here's hoping I can get at least almost all of this out before Sonic 4 drops. May this not-very-lore-accurate story to keep your hype up in the meantime. (*ᴗ͈ˬᴗ͈)ꕤ*.゚

Chapter 1: Teams of Heroes

Chapter Text

Tom, Maddie, and Ozzy were sitting by the fire after watching the kids take off in a race.

“It’s so rare we have peace and quiet like this,” Tom said, pulling his good arm around Maddie.

Maddie chuckled, “remember when the biggest thing to happen to Green Hills was when Missoula PD needed assistance on that high-speed chase?”

Tom laughed, “yeah and the guy didn’t even make it close to us. So, technically not even in Green Hills.”

Maddie smiled and shook her head. “A real riot before these kids.”

“You know,” Tom causally added, “I think you’re right about them being okay with another sibling, but we might need to buy a new place for the extra room.”

Maddie hummed and leaned her head on Tom’s shoulder. “Yeah, I was thinking the same. Although after all the construction costs, I’m not sure how much of a loan we’ll get approved for.”

Tom nodded with a heavy exhale. “Yeah, that’s been a pretty penny but I’m sure we could find something- pending our house doesn’t need another construction crew for a certain red guy to beat up.”

Maddie scoffed and grabbed her phone to put on some music when she noticed an old notification from their house security cameras. She clicked into the notification from the front door camera to playback the motion alert just as Tom’s phone started ringing.

The video was a typical night vision view of their front yard from the front door. Two seconds into the playback, a blast of bright light came from the front door and out to the yard saturated the screen for a second. The next second was clearly Shadow laying in the front yard on his back and jumping up quickly before something fast slammed into him again. The two figures attacking each other in the dark looked so similar to the footage of Shadow and Sonic on the beach.

“Wade!” Tom said into his phone. “I can’t understand you. Slow down. What happened?”

Maddie pointed to her phone at Tom paying back what looked like two space hedgehogs fighting in their front yard minutes ago.

“Is Sonic at home?” Maddie mouthed anxiously while Tom watched the clip and tried to listen to Wade.

The next few seconds of the clip had a totally different alien shape with pointy ears and wings doing acrobatic attacks against the shape that looked like Sonic, tag teaming coordinated attacks with Shadow.

This definitely looked worse than the play fights they had on the beach.

“What the hell is happening?!” Maddie called out. “Who's that?!”

“Sonic and Shadow are fighting on Main Street?” Tom repeated incredulously into the phone. “Property damage and-!? Yeah, we’re on our way!”

Maddie and Tom shared anxious looks before both jumping into action. Maddie threw their camp drinking water over the campfire while Tom shouted out to Tails and Knuckles in the woods. By the time Tom fumbled for the car keys in his pocket and Maddie got Ozzy in the car, small yellow and red bodies were racing towards them from the tree line.

15 MINUTES AGO, IN THE WACHOWSKI’S ATTIC BEDROOM…

“Great,” Rouge said, clasping her hands together. “So, you ready to-”

The sound of something crashing down next to her had her jump away defensively. Both her and Shadow tensed as they watched the creature that crashed through the attic ceiling window in a superhero landing, slowly standing to face the two.

The creature in front of them stood at Shadow’s height but made of almost completely blue metal with five long pointed quill shaped cones with white stripes on them. Two metal ears, black digital eyes with red glowing irises, a sharp silver pointed cone where a nose would be, a yellow engine in the center of its chest, wearing large black shoulder pads, red pointy shoes, and what looked like a studded belt with a flowing cape out the back of it.

“Oh, good,” Rouge sarcastically droned, shifting her weight on one leg and crossing her arms. “The dorky punk robot we ordered is here.”

“Who are you?” Shadow growled at the metal creature.

“I am the Ultimate Overlord, Metal Sonic,” a deep electric monotone voice came from the creature. “Inferior beings kneel!”

Shadow growled louder in a tense stance, chaos energy crackling across his quills.

“Yeah,” Rouge sighed with an annoyed look. “Right. Honey, half-baked try but not close enough. We know what the real Sonic actually looks like.”

She’d done her homework with G.U.N. enough to know that this definitely wasn’t Sonic.

A loud mechanical hissing sound came from the blue creature. “I AM THE REAL ONE!” the deep mechanical voice bellowed.

The metal form lunged at Rouge with high speed with an attempt to hit her, but Shadow had suddenly appeared between them.

All three were thrown back from the momentum down the attic stairs and into the Wachowski’s kitchen. Shadow and this fake ‘Sonic’ crashed into the cabinet that held the kitchen sink causing the cabinet and sink to break with the water line spraying endlessly all over the place.

Rouge, who landed by the kitchen entrance, got to her feet and landed a kick to the back of the blue metal form pinning Shadow down. She went for another kick when the creature grabbed her foot and effortlessly threw her across the living room with a yelp.

Shadow punched the creature right in the center of its face, sending it backwards a few steps.

Rouge got up from the broken coffee table with a pained groan. “Who the hell is this guy?”

Shadow went for a punch to the yellow metal torso just as it lit up and a blast of energy blew him backwards through the front door and out on the lawn.

“Shadow!” Rouge cried out.

The metal creature bolted outside after the dark hedgehog and the two immediately broke into a fight on the front lawn.

Rouge flew out to the front yard to join the fray but awkwardly had to find a pace to get between the two’s intense attacks. She tactically timed her blows for a second after Shadow’s attacks and became successful on her hits a few times in. The dark hedgehog and the bat fell into a rhythm of attacks that seemed almost coordinated and started to overwhelm the metal creature.

The blue creature ducked through an attack and took off at high speeds towards downtown Green Hills. With an annoyed growl, Shadow followed close behind the blue machine with Rouge flying behind him fast as she could manage.

MEANWHILE, 10 MINUTES AGO IN NEW YORK STATE…

A hooded figure caught the hammer effortlessly and crashed landed it on top of the last standing blue metal being in front of him, causing Sonic to be knocked backwards on the ground.

“What?!” Sonic called out in bewilderment. “Who are you?”

The hooded figure effortlessly held up the giant hammer over their shoulder before pulling back their hood. An almost bubblegum-pink hedgehog with kind, emerald green eyes stood in front of him with a smile.

“Sonic the Hedgehog,” she gleefully said, “I can’t believe it’s really you.”

“Uh, heh,” Sonic awkwardly smiled. “Nice to meet you. Who are you?”

The pink hedgehog giggled and held out a hand to pull him effortlessly to his feet as his communicator lit up with a string of notifications.

“Still a joker. You’re lookin’ good though!” The pink hedgehog scanned Sonic a few times with a smirk. “And don’t worry. I’m not upset.”

Sonic looked around the forest then back to the pink hedgehog. “Uh, are you talking to me?”

“Okay, enough with the jokes,” she said more seriously, glancing around. “We don’t have much time and should find a place to regroup.”

Sonic raised his eyebrows and looked around. “Seriously, who are you?”

She scoffed, “oh come on, don’t tell me you already forgot about me. It's me. Amy! Amy Rose?”

Sonic awkwardly looked around for a camera for a prank reality show before looking back at her emerald eyes.

“I’m sorry. Who?” He said honestly.

Amy’s face fell into a distant, sorrowful look. “You really don’t remember?”

“...No…” Sonic said slowly. “I’ve only met one other hedgehog before like us and he’s definitely not pink.”

Amy frowned with a distant look in her eye while Sonic looked around incredulously at the bodies in their wake as his communicator lit up with a low beep.

“Dude, you’re like Thor!” Sonic said in disbelief, looking around at the metal forms on the ground around them.

“Who?” Amy asked sweetly. “Is that a friend of yours? Is she cool?”

“Thor is a superhero in a comic,” Sonic chuckled, “Uh, yeah…she’s cool. Who the heck are these guys anyway?!”

Amy looked incredibly serious scanning the woods around them, "The evil Doctor Ivo Robotnik’s favorite toy, Metal Sonic. Or at least the inferior copies of him.”

Sonic let out a short sardonic laugh before his face fell in annoyance. “I’m sorry, Egghead lived?! Metal Sonic?!” Sonic scoffed. “Wow, really living rent free in this guy’s head every second of his life.”

Amy grabbed Sonic by the forearm, pulling him to the present. “Sonic, this is important. Do you have a team assembled?”

Sonic looked at her with bewildered excitement. “Oh my god? Are we about to form the Avengers right now?! ‘Cause if it comes down to it, I’d be willing to take the radioactive spider route-”

Amy anxiously scanned the forest around them and her voice dropped slightly, “what type of spiders?”

“-Or better yet, maybe let’s just say Justice League ‘cause I just got Shadow caught up on so much lore and having to explain all of the MCU to him is going to be a long-winded thing, plus it’s basically like I’m-”

“Sonic!” Amy called out in frustration. “This is serious! Life or death situation!”

“Right!” Sonic recovered. “Yes, I have a team- a great team! Let’s go. They’re just this way.”

Sonic gestured over his shoulder towards the way he came from.

“Lead the way!” Amy confidently cheered with a smile.

Sonic smirked and bolted back towards the camp site, leaving Amy behind in the dust.

Amy’s quills blew back from the puff of air, but she looked completely unphased.

“Just like old times,” she reminisced quietly with a smile.

Sonic was back a split second later. “Sorry! Uh, do you mind if I just carry you? It’s probably faster that way. Unless you happen to be as fast as-?”

“Yeah, I’m definitely not that fast,” Amy cut him off and in a quick flick of her hand her hammer disappeared in a puff of pink energy.

“And it just appears when you need it?!” Sonic enthusiastically called out.

“Yup!” Amy beamed proudly.

“That’s so cool!” Sonic held his arms out in front of him as Amy wrapped her arm around his shoulders and jumped into his arms. “Okay, hang on, we're gunna go really fast.”

“Great! I like fast.” Amy cheerfully held tightly to him.

Within a second the two were flying across state lines.

“Okay, Annie- it’s Anie right?” Sonic said.

“Amy,” Amy sighed with an unamused tone.

Sonic awkwardly chuckled. “Right, Amy. So outside of having a better entrance than most characters in the MCU, what are you doing here?”

Amy watched blurring landscapes flying by at extreme speeds. “Doctor Ivo Robotnik created a virus to create his Zombot army which took over Metropolis and Metal City first. The virus spread at such an alarming rate we all took shelter on South Island. Except…” Amy’s face dropped into a solemn look. “We didn’t realize Charmy was infected until it was too late.”

“Okay wait,” Sonic promptly jumped in, leaning slightly away from Amy. “So how do I know you’re not infected- or whatever?”

“You’d see it pretty quick if I was,” Amy showed off her pink arms. “Within seconds I’d have shiny metal skin then eventually start to become a mechanical being.”

Sonic pressed his lips together with wide eyes while weaving them through some trees in Ohio. “Okay, that sounds like a nightmare? So, what does Egghead want with this Robocop-virus-thing?”

Amy sighed, “total control over all of us from what we gathered.”

Sonic rolled his eyes, “yup, sounds about right.”

Another beep came from Sonic’s communicator.

“Do you need to get that?” Amy said, gesturing to his wrist.

“...Wha? Oh!”

Amy tapped the screen on his communicator to immediately hear a call pick up with loud crushing metal sounds.

“GAH!” Tails’s voice shrieked in the feedback.

“Tails! Buddy, what’s going on?” Sonic called out hoping to be loud enough while they were about to approach Montana state lines.

“Sonic! Finally!” Tails exclaimed. “We’ve been trying to get a hold of you. You gotta get back to Green Hills! Stat!”

“We’re on our way!” Sonic confidently cheered. “What’s happening?”

A soft “‘we’?” from Tails’s voice was quickly cut off by a yelp before the call was cut off.

The anxiety of his little brother in trouble had him running faster, passing by their now abandoned campsite.

“You know, one of these days we’ll have a normal camp out…” Sonic muttered.
