Work Text:
“The salt is still stinging your knuckles,” Ramune observes, his voice sounding frayed, like a rope stretched too thin.
He isn't looking at Kuro; he is staring intently at the steam rising from two bowls of miso, though his hands are trembling. The kitchen of the shrine is thick with the scent of dashi and the lingering, ozone-heavy scent of the *Kaigu* tool that had ripped the veil of the cult’s imprisonment only twenty-four hours prior. Kuro sits opposite him, his frame small and brittle, shoulders hunched as if expecting a blow that is no longer coming. His skin is pale, mapped with the red blooming bruises of restraint and the raw, stinging salt-burns from the ritual baths he was forced into.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” Ramune’s voice cracks, the frustration spilling over into a jagged edge of desperation. He finally looks up, his eyes wide and bloodshot. “The silence, the hiding—Kuro, you were dying in there. Why didn’t you say a single word to me about the scale of it?”
Kuro shifts, the fabric of his oversized borrowed shirt rasping against his sensitized skin. He feels a hollow, echoing ache in his chest, a void where the cult’s dogma used to sit, now replaced by a terrifying, raw openness. He shrugs, the movement slow and stiff.
“It doesn't matter anymore,” Kuro whispers, his voice a dry rasp. He doesn't see the point in excavating the ruins of a dead world. To him, the silence was a shield; the isolation was the only thing he owned.
The sound of a chair screeching against the floorboards cuts through the room. Ramune is suddenly there, invading his space, the heat of his body radiating through the small gap between them. He reaches out, his fingers gripping Kuro’s shoulder with a pressure that is almost painful—grounding, visceral, and desperate.
“It matters because you matter to me!” Ramune shouts, the volume vibrating in Kuro’s very bones.
Kuro freezes. He feels the sudden, violent thrum of Ramune’s heartbeat through that grip, a rhythmic, living pulse that crashes against his own stunned silence. He looks up into Ramune’s face—the raw grief, the fierce, protective rage—and for the first time in years, Kuro feels the air actually reach the bottom of his lungs. He is not a tool or a prisoner; he is seen.
