Work Text:

The August sun burns like a golden hammer over Smuggler’s Cove, turning the white coral sand into a blinding sheet of heat. Turquoise water laps rhythmically against the shore, a steady, hypnotic murmur that contrast wildly with the nervous energy crackling on the beach.

Dee Laytner lies flat on his back on a neon-patterned beach towel, looking every bit the laid-back tourist. Wearing nothing but loud, palm-frond swim trunks and dark sunglasses, he shifts his weight, the warm sand contouring beneath him. A massive, unapologetic smirk tugs at his lips. For the first time in months, there are no sirens, no stench of damp asphalt, no Bikky barging into the apartment demanding breakfast, and no Chief Smith roaring about damaged city property. Destroying the precinct car during that high-speed pursuit in the Bronx was practically a public service, as far as Dee is concerned—it scored them two mandatory weeks off, and Dee made damn sure to pull every shady favor he possessed to secure this secluded patch of the British Virgin Islands.

A few feet away, Randy "Ryo" Maclean is the exact opposite of relaxed. Dressed in crisp khaki shorts and a lightweight linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, Ryo paces a frantic, repetitive line in the sand. He holds his bulky 1994 flip-phone high in the air, flicking the antenna out with an increasingly desperate snap.

"No signal. Still no signal!" Ryo snaps, his voice tight with rising panic. He spins around, his dark eyes wide as he glares down at his partner. "Dee, how can you just lie there? Captain Mendoza has been gone for six hours! The charter boat is literally tied to a palm tree with a frayed rope, and he’s nowhere to be found!"

Dee slowly reaches up, sliding his sunglasses down the bridge of his nose to peek out with one bright green eye. His smile only broadens, taking in the flustered curve of Ryo’s jaw, the slight flush rising along his neck from the tropical heat and stress.

"Relax, Ryo," Dee draws out the words, his voice a lazy, gravelly purr. "The guy probably just went into the brush to find some wild pineapples or take a nap. Enjoy the view, man. The ocean is beautiful, the sand is warm... and you look amazing when you're stressed."

Ryo’s cheeks flare a sudden, brilliant scarlet, contrasting sharply with his pale hair. He stomps his foot, kicking up a shower of fine white powder. "This isn't a joke, Dee! We are in the middle of nowhere. If Mendoza ditched us, or if nobody back home actually knows the exact coordinates of this cove, we're stranded."

The word hangs in the hot, stagnant air. Dee doesn't hesitate. He sits up smoothly, the muscles of his back flexing as he swings his legs around. He pops his sunglasses onto the crown of his head and stands, stepping directly into Ryo’s personal space with the fluid grace of a predator who has finally cornered his favorite prey.

"Stranded?" Dee repeats, his green eyes flashing with pure, unabashed mischief. He tilts his head, crowding Ryo back a half-step until Ryo’s heels hit the soft slope of a dune. "Just you and me on a deserted island? Oh, the absolute horror. Think about it, partner—no Bikky throwing tantrums over video games, no Chief yelling at us about budget cuts, no mountains of endless paperwork. Just twenty-four hours a day of pure, uninterrupted quality time."

Before Ryo can formulate a logical counterargument, Dee reaches out. His broad, calloused hand hooks firmly around Ryo’s waist, yanking him forward until their chests practically bump. Ryo instantly tenses, his breath catching in his throat. His hands fly up, planting firmly against Dee’s bare, sun-warmed shoulders. His heart hammers wild rhythm against his ribs, his face burning hotter than the midday sun, but despite the instinctual gasp of surprise, he doesn't actually push Dee away.

"D-Dee, stop it!" Ryo stammers, his usual polite composure completely crumbling under Dee's overwhelming physical proximity. "We're on duty—well, we're *not* on duty, but we're in danger! We don't have supplies, we don't have a reliable radio—"

Dee leans in closer, his dark hair brushing against Ryo’s forehead, his warm breath fanning across Ryo’s lips as his voice drops into a low, intimate whisper. "The only danger here is you letting this perfect opportunity go to waste, Ryo... I need you to save me. Come back for me and…and save me. Please?"

Ryo’s eyes soften, the frantic edge in his posture melting for a fraction of a second into something agonizingly sweet and hesitant. Dee grins, sensing victory, and leans in to finally close the microscopic gap between their mouths. THUD. A heavy, metallic crash echoes violently from the dense jungle line directly behind the tree line, shattering the moment like glass. Instantly, the romance vanishes.

Ryo breaks out of Dee’s grip with trained police reflex, dropping low into a sharp defensive stance, his hand instinctively reaching for his hip where his service weapon normally sits. Finding only khaki shorts, his eyes narrow, scanning the thick foliage with sharp, clinical focus. Dee stands frozen for a beat before letting out a loud, theatrical groan, throwing his hands up toward the cloudless sky in utter disbelief.

"Are you kidding me?!" Dee bellows toward the trees, his voice booming across the quiet cove. "Whoever is out there, I am going to shoot you myself! I swear to God!"

The bushes rustle violently, and a heavy wooden crate wrapped tightly in industrial waterproof plastic comes tumbling out from the dark green canopy, rolling down the sandy embankment until it settles at their feet. Cautious, Ryo crouches beside the crate. He inspects the heavy-duty rubber seal, then pulls a small pocket knife from his shorts, slicing through the thick plastic netting. He pops the metal latches and cracks the lid open.

Sunlight glints off dark, oiled steel. Neat rows of military-grade automatic assault rifles sit cushioned inside, complete with stacked high-capacity magazines.

Ryo exhales slowly, his expression shifting from startled cop to grim detective. "Dee, look at this. These are high-grade military rifles. This isn't a deserted resort island... it's a smugglers' drop point."

Dee walks over, staring down at the arsenal with an expression of profound, tragic betrayal. He gives the corner of the wooden box a sharp, frustrated kick, sending a puff of sand into the air, before looking down at Ryo. His eyes lock onto his partner’s, a crooked, dark smirk slowly replacing his scowl.

"Fine," Dee sighs heavily, dramatic as ever. "We hunt down the bad guys, we hijack their radio, and then—and only then—you owe me a proper date under the palm trees. From your anus to the apex of your aorta. Deal?"

Ryo blinks, caught off guard by the sheer, unfiltered crudeness of Dee's phrasing, before a soft, genuine smile breaks across his face. He shakes his head, reaching up to push a strand of pale hair out of his eyes as he stands up beside his partner.

"Deal," Ryo murmurs, his tone laced with quiet affection. "Just don't lose your gun in the sand, hotshot."
