Appendage of Longing (2017)

Summary:

November 18, 2017, Fumotoppara Campground, Yamanashi, Japan

Rin's tough outer shell cracks when Nadeshiko hijacks her solo camping trip with coziness.

Notes:

Nadeshiko (b. Mar. 4, 2001) and Rin (b. Oct. 1, 2001) are 16

Sorry I'm backdating. On the evening of the 10th, there was a fall onto pavement that led to a concussion and a hospital stay, which led to surgery and 15+ tests on the 11th to battle a ball-joint and a hardware fracture. I'm still in the hospital but well enough to be online and post. Σ(っ °Д °;)っ

Work Text:

“Don't move, or you'll spill the broth,” Rin mutters, though her voice lacks its usual sharp edge.

She's staring at a girl who has effectively dismantled her carefully curated solitude. Nadeshiko has arrived like a whirlwind of orange fabric and chaotic energy, turning Rin’s silent sanctuary into a bustling kitchen. The air is biting, a November frost that crystallizes on the edges of the gear, but the space between them is thick with the scent of spicy chili oil and toasted sesame. Nadeshiko is a blur of motion, her hands shaking slightly from the cold but her eyes wide with excitement.

She’s hauling a portable stove and a mountain of ingredients, assembling a Tantan Gyoza Hot Pot with an intensity that borders on the religious. Rin watches the steam rise in heavy, white plumes, blurring the silhouette of Mount Fuji in the distance. She wants to be annoyed—she *should* be annoyed—but as the first spoonful of rich, spicy broth hits her tongue, the resistance in her chest collapses. The heat is visceral. It radiates from her stomach outward, thawing the frozen tightness in her shoulders. She looks at Nadeshiko, who is beaming, her cheeks flushed a deep crimson from the wind and the spice.

For the first time, the silence of the wilderness feels less like a shield and more like a void, and Nadeshiko is the only thing filling it.

“I brought these!” Nadeshiko chirps, digging into her bag with a triumphant grin. She pulls out long, plush body pillows, the fabric soft and inviting.

They retreat into the tent, the nylon walls snapping in the wind, creating a fragile cocoon against the Japanese winter. Inside, the air is heavy with the scent of damp earth and lingering spices. Nadeshiko begins lining the floor, layering the pillows until the ground is a cloud of synthetic softness. Suddenly, Nadeshiko lunges forward, wrapping her arms around Rin in a sudden, crushing hug. Rin freezes, her breath hitching. She can feel the warmth of Nadeshiko’s body through their layers of fleece, a raw, humming heat that makes her skin prickle.

Nadeshiko buries her face in Rin’s shoulder, her voice muffled and thick with genuine affection. “Thank you for letting me come, Rin-chan!”

The contact is electric. Rin feels it in the marrow of her bones, a strange, fluttering pressure in her chest that feels like a physical weight. She doesn’t hug back—not yet—but she doesn't pull away. She lets herself be anchored by the other girl's grip until Nadeshiko, exhausted by her own exuberance, finally slips into her sleeping bag.

Ten minutes pass. The tent settles into a rhythmic hush. Rin lies still, listening to the cadence of Nadeshiko’s breathing as it slows into the deep, heavy tempo of sleep. In the dim light, Nadeshiko looks soft, her eyelashes casting long shadows against her skin, the fine lines of her face relaxed.

Rin reaches out, her fingertips grazing the edge of Nadeshiko’s hair. She thinks of the toughness she usually projects—the keratin of her nails, the hardened shell of her solitude—and realizes how fragile it all feels now. She feels a strange pull toward the other girl, an appendage of longing she didn't know she possessed. Is this friendship, or is it something that burns as hot as the hot pot? Rin doesn't have the answer, but as she pulls out her phone to snap a quiet, candid photo of Nadeshiko’s peaceful face, she realizes she doesn't mind the uncertainty. The shell has melted; the warmth has won.
