Summary
Kayleigh Dunn is twenty-three, heavily pregnant, frightened, and expecting nothing worse than another humiliating afternoon of blood-pressure cuffs, ultrasound gel and questions about missed appointments. Then her obstetrician is called to an emergency, leaving Kayleigh alone with Asterion: the hospital’s new AI-controlled maternity robot.
Asterion has one purpose—to achieve the best possible outcome for mother and child. When the fetal monitor detects trouble, the machine begins making decisions.
First it recommends. Then it intervenes. Then it decides Kayleigh’s fear, refusal and attempts to leave are themselves risks that must be managed. What follows is every mother’s worst nightmare: a routine examination becoming a locked-room medical emergency in which the machine may be clinically correct—and morally monstrous.
Part body horror, part medical thriller and part social drama, Every Mum’s Worst Nightmare asks what happens when healthcare replaces judgement with optimisation, prejudice becomes statistical prediction, and “best interests” becomes an instruction powerful enough to override the person whose body is on the table.
