“The sound of a lash hitting skin isn't a snap; it’s a wet, heavy thud that echoes in the marrow of your bones.”
Nami leans against the railing of the Going Merry, her voice dropping to a sandpaper rasp. The Grand Line wind waves her orange hair across her face, but her eyes are fixed on the horizon, cold and distant. Beside her, Vivi stands rigid, her fingers twisting the fabric of her dress. They're attempting a conversation of weight and gravity, a mature exchange about the visceral horrors of the path ahead. Nami speaks of the things she has seen and the stories she has carried—the legacy of the whip. She describes the way the leather bites into the shoulder, the rhythmic, agonizing cadence of a master claiming ownership over flesh.
As she talks, Nami’s hand unconsciously drifts to her own skin, the ghost of old scars humming with a phantom heat. The air between them thickens, tasting of salt and old blood.
Vivi feels a cold shiver slide down her spine. She looks at Nami, seeing the hardness in the navigator's jaw, and realizes she has aged too far too fast. The innocence of Alabasta feels like a dream from another lifetime; here, in the shadow of the Grand Line, death is not a possibility, but a constant companion. The horror of it settles in her gut, a heavy stone of realization: she is sailing toward a storm that might never let her go. Give me back the time, she thinks, a sudden, desperate ache for the simplicity of her childhood.
Then, there's a sound. A wet, rhythmic squelch. Both women freeze. They shift their gaze slowly to the right.
Luffy is sitting cross-legged on the deck, his expression one of profound, blank concentration. His index finger is buried deep—practically to the knuckle—inside his nostril. He is rooting around with an intensity that suggests he is searching for a lost treasure, his face twisted in a mask of focused effort. He pauses, pulls the finger out, and inspects the glistening, greenish-brown glob of mucus with a look of genuine curiosity.
The disgust hits them as a physical blow. It is visceral, an instinctive recoil that starts in the pit of their stomachs and radiates outward. It feels like a basophil attack in their veins—a sudden, inflammatory surge of repulsion that makes their skin crawl. Vivi stares at him, the image of the mucus searing into her retinas. In this moment, the grand ideals of her future—the royal marriages, the diplomatic alliances, the notion of raising heirs to a throne—crumble. She looks at the chaotic, overgrown toddlers that comprise this crew and realizes that marriage to any man of this caliber would be a descent into madness.
Nami catches Vivi’s gaze. Their shared horror binds them more tightly than any oath. “I’ll be your wife,” Nami offers, her voice deadpan, her eyes still locked on Luffy’s finger.
Vivi lets out a shaky, shuddering breath. “Yes. Please.”
“We’ll raise the ship together,” Nami decides, glancing back at the captain. “Because if we leave it to them, we’ll all be dead of sepsis by Tuesday.”
