Chapter 1: Echoes of the Fallen

Chapter Text

Jason pov

I looked around at all the damaged buildings and hurt people. A lot of repair had been made in one week, but nothing could erase the devastation. There had been so many deaths, but no one's hit harder than Annabeth's.

I sighed, and turned to Cabin 3. Percy had locked himself in and hadn't come out since the battle ended. He needed to stay alive for everyone. Percy was the camp's great leader, he had been since he arrived at twelve. Annabeth had been a camper since she was seven, and she and Percy had been the best greek demigod warriors and commanders. The camp couldn't lose him too.

I opened the door to his cabin, and stepped inside. All the blinds were shut, and the room was dark and cold. Percy was standing at the fountain, tracing patterns in the water as he stared deep into its' depths.

"Hey, Perce." Percy didn't respond, but he raised his head to stare at the opposite wall. I sighed. "Percy you need to eat something, please." Percy turned around to face me. "I'm not hungry, Jason."

I gasped. Percy hadn't had much time to recover after falling into Tartarus, and he looked dead. He had red rimmed, sunken eyes, and hollow cheekbones. He was so pale and thin, but his eyes were full of pain, sorrow, and anger. I reached out to steady his shoulder, and could feel his bones.

"Percy, she died a hero's death. She was a true warrior until the end." Percy snapped up his head and glared at me.

"Is that all she lived for? To die a great death for the gods? To be their last great sacrifice?" His voice cracked on the last word, and he looked at me, not angry anymore, just sad and broken.

"Percy, you can't keep living like this. Is this what Annabeth would've wanted? What would she do if she saw you like this?" Percy broke into a bittersweet smile. "Told me to quit acting like an idiot. Judo flipped me." I nodded. "Live for her."

Percy took a deep, steadying breath. "The others?"

I shook my head, running a hand through my hair. "No sign of Leo. Nico says..." I trailed off taking a moment to wipe my eyes.

"Nico says he felt Leo die. He's not coming back."

Percy nodded. I pulled him into my arms, and he broke into sobs. We cried together until he passed out from exhaustion. I set Percy down on his bed gently. Percy would never be the same after Annabeth. They were soulmates since they were twelve.

Annabeth searched every single day Percy was missing. Now Annabeth was lost, but Percy couldn't search for her. She was gone forever.

I watched, horrorstruck as Leo's flaming dragon disappeared with Gaea into the sky. As I heard a growl behind me, I realized the battle wasn't over yet.

A lone dracaenae still stood. It lunged toward Percy as his back was still turned. I dimly heard a warning shout coming from my lips, felt myself moving into action to stop the monster, but I was too late.

Annabeth leaped in front of Percy, killing the dracaenae with her dagger just as its sword caught her in the chest.

Percy turned around, registering what happened as shock, panic, and despair crossed his face. Percy caught Annabeth as she fell to the ground, his hands frantically pressed on the wound, trying to stop the blood from flowing, but it was no use.

"Medic!" Percy shouted, but Annabeth caught his hand. "Percy" she said, gasping for breath. "Percy, it's not going to work."

Percy shook his head frantically. "No, no, no, no, no. Stay with me Annabeth, okay? I'm right here. I'll always be here for you."

Annabeth reached out with a trembling hand, brushing the tears off his cheek.

"Don't cry, Percy. Remember our good times, not the bad ones."

Percy stroked her hair, touching the gray streaks they both had from holding up the sky.

"I'll remember" Percy whispered.

"Percy, I'll meet you in Elysium one day. I'll meet you there, but promise me it won't be soon"

Annabeth broke into a fit of coughing, spattering her fist with blood.

Percy nodded, reaching down to kiss her one last time. "I promise."

"I love you Wise Girl."

"I love you Seaweed Brain." Annabeth smiled faintly.

Percy pulled Annabeth in, holding her close as the light faded from her eyes.

Tears rolled down the faces of everyone surrounding them as Percy held Annabeth's lifeless body and sobbed.
