It had been another unsuccessful pursuit, cued with the typical hijinks and explosions that left a mark. Sitting on the edge of a cliff, Wile had rolled out the bit of gauze he managed to scrounge from his crowded cave. With a slight wince, he covered the seething red scratch that had manifested on his upper arm as he leaned back against one of the rocks. The sun was starting to set for the evening, and despite the failure, it was a nice reprieve for the day.
”Beep! Beep!”
Oh no.
There you are! I was looking all over for you after that last invention exploded! :)
Wile glared from his side eye as he slowly turned his head to that infernal blue bird. With the least damaged arm, he held up a sign with a retort. Come to gloat some more?
Road Runner shook his head quickly as the feathers swayed from side to side. “Beep!” No, I wanted to watch the sunset with you.
There was no way this was genuine. It really had to be a mockery. The next sign came just as swiftly to respond. Watch the sunset?! With me? What kind of trick are you getting at?
“Beep beep!” No trick, I promise! :) Truce for now until tomorrow and….it was too quiet around this desert without you.
The bird offered a genuine smile, hopping on its feet until Wile responded with a begrudging demeanor. Fine.
In a puff of smoke, Road Runner appeared by his side with that sickeningly adorable smile, looking out to all the oranges and purples of the evening desert sky.
“Beep.” It’s so pretty tonight, I almost didn’t think I would see another one again.
Wile quirked an eyebrow at the insinuation. What do you mean by that? It was a peculiar sight, but it was almost as if Road Runner shrunk into himself just a bit. A meek expression of doubt and remembering something that wasn’t pleasant. This bird was a force of nature to Wile, and what could have possibly happened in his absence to shake Road Runner just a bit?
“Beep, beep.” They tried to capture me that time, you know? Acme. It’s not like I was scared or anything but…still.
Wile’ could have sworn he heard a slight tremble in the roadrunner’s voice, but he didn’t want to give it away. Ever since that day in the court room, there was a change to the predator and prey dynamic. It was less…..hostile, well at least on Wile’s end. This sudden revelation was news to the gangly predator as he looked across Road Runner’s for any sign of fear or bittersweet relief after avoiding capture.
The coyote wrote something in the dirt before he placed a gentle hand on one of Road Runner’s wings. Wile offered that rare gentle smile as Road Runner turned to see what was written.
I’m glad they didn’t.
Next thing he knew, a blue feathered head rested on Wile’s shoulder just as the sun crept below the horizon. “Beep.” Me too.
