Of all the times he'd been in the lab, this moment in time was the only instance that the air could taste this way. The buzz of ectoplasm already on standby, left over from the failed attempt just hours ago. All the chemicals and soldering smell settled in the air. A discordant harmony- one Danny took in with a deep sigh, adjusting his braid to make sure it wouldn't get in the way of his task.
Moment taken, he made his way to the 'on' button to the outside of the machine. Phasing through the metal piping, he used his claws to clip the wiring. His father had noticed the error in the blueprints on their last attempt to activate the portal and corrected it. The button on the inside was no longer the sole start up point. It might not even function depending on his method of fixing it. They couldn't have that.
Grabbing onto the freshly clipped wires, Danny phased them out, pulling them to the portal frame before letting tangibility take hold of them once he was sure they weren't crossed through any other wires. His parents really should do something about the chaos of their wiring. No way for them to notice his changes to their design. He spliced the wires to the new box, while the mess covered his tracks seamlessly.
Perfect. Danny nodded at his work. This would kill him for sure.
He went invisible before letting time return to its regular flow to watch things playout.
His mother held a recorder as his father moved to turn the portal on, using the button that no longer had any wires connected to it. Funny how it was the only wires they protected with a casing, now unable to notice it missing.
Danny watched their disappointment; it stung, but they'd get over it.
They left and he waited, making sure to only stick around long enough to hear three teens shuffling down the stairs.
Good.
Right on time.
