The awe in Ratio's tone sends Aventurine hiding behind his bangs with a defensive snort. From here, Ratio takes note of the hitch of Aventurine's shoulders, the tenseness of his grip on his glass. "Professor, I saw a Xianzhou martial artist snatching mung beans out of the air the other day on my reels. It's not that impressive. Plenty of human-shaped things can do what I did tonight."
"On the contrary. Those are individuals in an otherwise mundane species, and are rare even among the elite. This would be an evolutionary design specific to Sigonian biology, or perhaps even further into the Avgins." Ratio leans in, completely serious, ready to lecture as always when he sees it. Aventurine's whole body has stiffened. His drink trembles in his left hand, and his cards sit on the table forgotten. He won't look at Ratio.
Ratio's words die, his train of thought derailed.
