Shen Jiu swallowed the shock, but just barely. For a moment, he was seven and Yue Qi was nine. They were sitting by the river as the sun set and Yue Qi was smiling as he placed a red handkerchief they'd found over Shen Jiu's head.
"This Qi-ge will marry Xiao Jiu," he'd said, one tooth missing from the side of his wide grin. The sunlight had haloed his hair, turning the edges to gold and Shen Jiu had thought he didn't know much about being someone's wife, but if it was Qi-ge, then that was all he'd ever want.
