Summary
Xaden Riorson went to Aelmiris for one reason: to keep the people he loves alive.
Now he is surrounded by the very monsters he has spent his life fighting, trapped inside a war he cannot escape and carrying a power that grows more dangerous every time he uses it. Berwyn wants obedience. Daramor wants something else entirely. And somewhere beyond the Barrens, Violet is building the kingdom Xaden once thought he would never live to see.
To survive Aelmiris, Xaden will have to learn its rules, understand the people who rule it, and become convincing enough that no one notices how desperately he is still fighting them.
