Summary
Ryland Grace had never intended to leave humanity behind and sometimes he missed it so desperately he clawed at the walls of the Hail Mary like a caged animal.
Simon came from a world so ravaged he wasn't even sure what humanity was other than a writhing, screaming thing that refused to die and he yearned for a goddamn break from the cruelty.
Three years into the journey to Erid, the SM-13 drifts into their path and Grace can't handle the idea of abandoning something human made so far from home, the last human made thing he might ever see beyond his own ship. What he and Rocky bring aboard is more than just a floating tin can. The half dead man almost certainly means Grace will starve before he makes it to Erid, but it's a sacrifice he's willing to make if it means spending even a fraction of his remaining time with another human. Rocky knows there's something wrong with their new companion more than skin deep, even if Grace seemed to be willfully ignoring it in favor of enjoying human company again. If it keeps Grace happy, Rocky will do whatever it takes to keep this new secret.
