It was a murder, but not a crime

Summary:

Going to Metropolis for law school was a risk, given the proximity of the very city Jason was hoping to avoid, but Talia had insisted.

It was just his luck (and more than a bit of typecasting) that he found his way onto the team for a case going down in Gotham, a case that would end up humiliating the Replacement just as much as his original revenge plot would have.

Oh well, Talia didn't call him dramatic for nothing.

Notes:

Hello and welcome!!! I’m so excited to finally be posting this super self-indulgent AU. I’ve already got it fully outlined with a few chapters written - first full chapter up tomorrow and then probably every 2 weeks or so after.

Since this is a law school AU I have to do the disclaimer of please, dear lord, do not use this as advice for real life law things. I am not an attorney, we do not actually have to deal with the legal implications of superpowered vigilantes. I’m going to do my best to be realistic for the circumstances in this fic, but I’m gonna start gnawing on drywall if anyone says they trust a word I say and used it in real life. Please talk to a real attorney I'm begging you.

With that, enjoy! The main title is from Cell Block Tango from Chicago.

Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

Talia fought hard to push down the small smile threatening to spread across her face as her father sent her a despairing look across the dinner table.

Jason was gesticulating wildly in the air (Damian eagerly vibrating from where he was sat next to him) as he argued that, since the League of Assassins was technically supposed to be a big eco-terrorist organization, Damian should be allowed to have a pet tiger since the one that they recently rescued from the home of a corrupt oil-baron would never be able to survive in the wild anyways.

It was true that Damian had amassed quite the menagerie over the years, particularly through the use of his “big sad eyes” (as Jason described them) whenever his brother left to attend his university studies.

Jason was under the impression that Talia had been sending him to various schools as a student to uncover and take down various threats to the league and its goals. He had performed remarkably well in destroying a human trafficking ring in Paris, a plan to devastate the local rainforests in Indonesia, and a strange cabal of underpaid TAs seeking to summon the antichrist in Stockholm.

Little did he know, he had found all of those by accident. Talia just wanted him to go to school and get his literature degree, but her boy was tenacious and apparently enjoyed giving himself more things to do.

Transferring all of those credits between the various institutions was an absolute hassle, but some light blackmail and a few donations by Talia went a long way towards Jason al Ghul’s imminent graduation with high honors in literature.

Her father had reluctantly allowed her to officially adopt Jason after the boy had survived a true onslaught of assassination attempts over the course of years (in combination with witnessing Damian’s visible attachment to his older brother). She suspected that his reluctant acceptance had become reluctant attachment after Ra’s had gifted Jason with an official title a year after his adoption.

الأمير من المياه و السيف (al-amir min al-miah wa as-sayf). The Prince of the Waters and the Sword.

After he had gotten over his shock, Jason had started making King Arthur jokes.

Her boy could never accept a compliment without letting his mouth run afterwards.

Regardless, the Demon’s Head was currently facing Jason’s verbal wrath, spurned on by his eager brother, and the look she was receiving told her that Ra’s wanted her to fix the issue.

Well… she knew how to make it worse.

Talia took a sip of wine and smiled. Metropolis had a good law school, and Jason’s application had already been submitted.

Notes:

Ra’s was inspired by his depiction in the Under the Red Hood movie where he’s just like yeah sorry my bad your son died, I made it worse.

Thank you to my irl friend who studied Arabic and used it to help me with my silly little fanfic <3
