Derek knew how this would end.
He knew a lot about endings. Every stranger's death, every argument's outcome, every choice already made before it's made. The knowledge had come for free and took everything else in return. Surprise, hope, the small mercy of not knowing. All that was left was a terrible, borrowed calm. A stillness so complete it looked, from the outside, like peace.
But Derek had started to notice something wrong with his own tranquility. It arrived too easily. It fit too well. And when it told him the noblest thing he could do was die for the man he loved, some old, battered part of him refused to believe that peace should ever feel this much like giving up.
A King was watching him choose. The same King wanted an entertaining ending.
