Chapter Text
It had been weeks since Wifies had posted his Searching for the Leviathan video and even longer since he had last seen Hummer. “Why him” was the thought that kept going through his head. But something else had been edging the back of his mind as well. He knew what it was, what kept him on Hummer’s world, now basically living on Hummer’s ship. He brought his laptop, his research, and recording equipment on board. He had to keep up his work as a detective, but he just couldn’t let go of this case.
Even beyond the email he showed in his video, he kept sending more to Hummer. He did take a few days the first time he emailed after all, maybe he just is bad at checking it. That’s what Wifies kept telling himself. But it was dead silent in his inbox. If it weren’t for his line of work he would have looked insane checking it as often as he did.
Then he saw it. A video in response to his own, theorizing that Hummer was the Leviathan all along.
He was Levi.
Wifies sat back in his chair as he blankly looked at the screen.
Then he groaned as he slapped both hands over his face. “Damnit!” He stood up and started kicking anything that was nearby on the ship’s floor. “Damnit damnit. Some detective I am– I was with him, how did I not notice!?” Tears sprung from his eyes. He wished he had been better to Hummer, he should have been better to him. Levi or not, Hummer was… “I’m so stupid. He needed me.”
Wifies let himself crumple to the ground as he realized his mistakes lost him both Levi and Hummer. “Why me?”
After allowing himself to wallow on the floor, he started reflecting on their time together. The evidence the video brought up, and even just remembering what it was like to see it first hand. What it felt like firsthand. How he had been feeling Levi the whole time, how he still felt for him.
Then, ”Oh my God. Hummer is Levi!” Wifies shouted as he brought himself to his feet in a hurry.
How stupid was he? Hummer gave him all the tools, all the information about how to find him! That’s what he’s been doing wrong this whole time.
Without another thought, he brought himself to the top of the deck, haphazardly throwing everything out of his inventory, making sure he was without everything. He feels it, knows that this will work. Before taking the plunge into the cold terrain’s water, he muttered to himself. “I believe in you, I still do.”
The sound of his body crashing in the water processed before anything else. The biting chill crawled deeper into his bones as the water absorbed and weighed down his clothes with him in them. It was late in the evening so the water was particularly unforgiving. Wifies couldn’t bring himself to care.
After getting over the initial disorientation of entering the ocean, he wasted no time facing himself toward the floor. He swam and swam, holding his breath as long as he could. Getting further from the boat, as far out as his body could get him. His lungs burned, his limbs felt like a million pounds as he pressed forward. The ocean was so dark he couldn’t tell which direction he was facing anymore. The only thing guiding him was the small air bubbles escaping him, ignoring their advice to follow them as he went the opposite way.
Then his health started depleting.
He let the rest of the air escape his lungs as he finally let himself rest where his latest grave would be. His vision started to grey out as he edged closer to his demise. It filled his lungs, it burned, the pressure was uncomfortable. He couldn’t lie and say that he was used to it. But it felt natural to let his body accept the pain, the slow death. He’s going to save me.
The anticipation was killing him, he didn’t know what he would do if this didn’t work. Probably keep drowning himself since this is the only lead he has now to find Hummer. No, it was going to work, he would show up.
If tears could leave his eyes, they would have followed the last of his air bubbles as he tried to speak, “I believe.”
He was at his last heart. He felt the pang of the last hit he could possibly take.
Just as his vision nearly blacked out, he felt his lungs refill as a bright light appeared before his face. As Wifies’ eyes adjusted, a familiar CRT screen was in his face as he now processed the feel of hands holding onto his outer thigh and hip, keeping him afloat.
Before he could even think to point out the leviathan-like features his friend now possessed, lips crashed into his own. The warm buzz of static against his face reminded him how cold his body felt submerged.
Their lips locked together easily and glided against each other through the water. If Wifies needed air he’s sure Hummer would have easily stolen his last heart. Not that he would have minded of course.
His friend then abruptly pulled back as he now placed his hands on Wifies’ shoulders. “You found me! I can’t believe it, you actually did it!”
Wifies now realized he had been holding onto Hummer’s shoulders for dear life this entire time and lightened his grip as one hand fell to his head. He threw his head back as he wheezed out laughing, “I did! You actually came for me- and you are just as british as I remember- why are you british? I believed and you came as you said you would!” He felt hysterical, this makes no sense and yet here he is.
Hummer laughed with him as he nuzzled up under his neck, glowing tail wrapping around one of Wifies’ legs. “Yes, I’m here, thank you, thank you.” He muttered his gratitude beginning to sound choked up.
Wifies fully embraced him now, holding on tight. “Where did you go? I- I spent so long looking for you– I feel like such an idiot- I was an idiot to you!”
“God, you were, you really were, but I don’t care. You came back to me in the end and that’s all that matters to me. I- I didn’t know what I was but you helped me find it, I remember now. I knew it, I knew you were the perfect person, even after finding me the first time you couldn’t help your curiosity. You kept believing in me.”
“How could I not- you–” Wifies suddenly had to hold up a hand to his throat as he felt the salty sting of ocean water filling his airways again.
Hummer seemed to notice as he frantically tried to start pulling Wifies up. “Oh shoot- sorry I- I am still remembering how to do these things- no Youtube tutorial for this haha– oh I should, right yeah…” He started mumbling more to himself than anything as he now secured the other close to his chest as he swam them toward the surface.
The moment they broke through the surface Wifies was coughing up a lung as he clung onto Hummer. He held his head by his chest as tears now became apparent above water.
Wifies finally caught his breath as he continued to let out weak laughs as he felt planks against his back. He didn’t even realize that Hummer had already gotten them back to the ship. It was only then he seemed to realize what position they were in. Him on his back while Hummer was over him, leg between his thighs as both of his hands caged him in. From here he could see how long his tail stretched out behind him, happily hitting the deck. His face was close enough he could feel the staticky warm buzz of his screen again.
“You…” He said fondly, though the rest of his sentence died in his throat as Hummer looked at him curiously. He tried again. “You kissed me.”
It was only then that Hummer’s screen burned brighter and Wifies swear he could hear something now whirring inside. “I uhm-! That was- was that alright? Mmh-!”
Wifies had leaned forward, using a hand to help drag the CRT closer to himself as he now pressed their lips together. Then leaning back he said, “I would pay 75 dollars to build a flying machine and stay under water for several hours just to blow it up and drown again just to kiss you.”
“Oh uh haha- are you still upset about the 75 bucks?-” Wifies kissed him again.
“Yeah a bit.” He laughed “You let them rob me, if I had known they couldn’t see you, I would have made you steal from that guy yourself!”
Hummer lets out a dramatic sigh. “I finally found him, the person who truly believes in me and he is so petty and grumpy.”
“I lost my friend for several weeks and 75 bucks, I think anybody would be upset- Where were you man?”
Hummer only now seemed to realize the position he had put the both of them in and let himself slide off to the side. Wifies sat up when he did this to more properly face him.
“You know I-I uh, I don’t really know..? Like I know where I was, but not really? I don’t know. I think it has something to do with why I couldn’t remember being Levi– I mean you know. Being myself I guess.” Hummer stammered through his haphazard explanation.
Wifies sighed as he leaned forward to rest his head against Hummer’s shoulder. He couldn’t stay away from the other man, it felt, but he had no idea if he would disappear again. “That makes zero sense, and I think you’ve driven me to insanity… how did you know to find me this time?”
Hummer awkwardly laughed as he began to tentatively put a hand on top of the detective’s head. “I know you hate this answer but I kinda felt it?” His voice raised an active at the end of his sentence like he wasn’t entirely sure himself. “I just knew it was you. I wanted it to be you.”
“That’s- wow.” Wifies face exploded into a huge blush. “I mean,” he let out a cough, “yeah that’s to be expected. We were just kind of making out I mean.”
“Uh haha yeah, guess so… sorry if that was a weird thing to say.”
“No, no no! Not at all. I guess I just didn’t expect it… I like that you also wanted to find me and it wasn’t me being a creepy stalker trying to hunt you down or something.”
Hummer broke out into a laugh. “Could you imagine that? Hunting for the Leviathan, sounds pretty ominous."
“The place you sent me to after I saw you was ominous."
“What? What place? I don’t think I took you anywhere.” He tilted his head to the side as he looked down at his companion.
Wifies now quickly pushed himself up to better face the other. “What? You don’t remember that at all? You’re the one who took me- the footage, I can show you the footage! Duh, Hummer, I’ll show you what I posted.” Wifies seemed to stop for a moment, then hesitantly added, “ah, er, Levi? Sorry I mean, do I call you Hummer or Levi now?”
“Ah, I don’t really know? I mean, I don’t know if I’m Levi or Hummer now, I kind of feel like I’m in a weird inbetween place. Like I’m not really anything at all, which you know, kind of sucks.” Hummer rambled as he began to play with one of the fins he had on the side of his CRT.
“Hey.” Wifies said, firmly, catching the other’s attention. “It doesn’t matter what or who you technically are. You are you. Please don’t leave me again, okay?”
Hummer’s screen began to light up again as he held the other’s gaze. “Well… if that’s the case… maybe if it’s alright with you. We could do a part two for your video? I want you to be by my side when I’m discovering what I really am.”
“Yes– yes of course! There’s so much more for us to discover… together.” Wifies hesitantly took Hummer’s hand into his own when he bashfully looked at him.
“Haha- yeah! Together.” Hummer grasped the other’s hand tight.
