When it came to Kakashi’s birthday, there were years where he wanted to mainly spend it alone, by himself where no one would bug him. Usually times like this where he would reminisce about his life and the things that’s happened since becoming hokage. He even remembers the last time he truly celebrated his birthday because of Tenzou and his big mouth at the time. Team Ro threw a surprise party for Kakashi and all they did was sit and drink and eat for hours on end. Back then, Kakashi didn’t mind. It was one of those times where no one knew when they were coming home or anything so a tiny celebration here and there didn’t hurt.
But Team Ro wasn’t a thing anymore. He was the Rokudaime Hokage and the world was at peace now. There was no need for him to celebrate his birthday like team Ro did seeing as, though he still didn’t know when he was going to die, he knew he wasn’t going to die at the hands of someone else… that he knew of. Either way, he knew he was safe from most of what would have killed him years ago.
As he sat in the bar, his whiskey neat, Kakashi sighed, hearing the door to the bar open. At first he was surprised to see Itachi Uchiha here of all places, but then when was it ever his business? The only business he had was between himself and the drink he had on the table… and the book he had in his hand. He was perfectly fine until he heard Itachi’s footsteps coming towards him, stopping at his booth.
“Do you mind?” Itachi asked.
Kakashi shook his head no, motioning for Itachi to sit down. Once sat, the bartender came over and got the same exact thing for Itachi. At first Kakashi was going to warn the bartender that Itachi wouldn't be able to handle something so strong, but then Kakashi stopped himself. If there was anyone he wanted to see drunk again, it would be an adult Itachi who helped save the shinobi world years ago… if only to see how he would act knowing Itachi would just take it like a champ until he drinks too much… unless much has changed since then.
They both stayed quiet once the drink was delivered. Kakashi used his book to make it look like he was reading while he was watching Itachi take his first sip. Itachi’s eyes widened but he didn’t say anything, making Kakashi feel a little disappointed. Oh well… they did have all night.
“So… I have a feeling that you didn’t come to find me and that my little kiddies roped you into it” Kakashi said, going back to sipping his drink, his eyes looking up at the Uchiha.
“You are correct.” Itachi said, coughing as he sipped his own drink.
“But I thought I might save you from what they have planned this year.”
“Cake?”
“Hai, cake.” Itachi sighed.
“I don’t get it. You’re what, in your fifties now? Why would they try to celebrate your birthday?”
Kakashi shook his head back and forth before sighing.
“Around my birthday was when we went on our first mission out of the village together. I’m sure Sasuke told you about that one.”
“Oh the mission that went wrong? Yeah, he definitely told us about that one.”
The two went quiet again, both sipping at their drinks but only one handling it better than the other. Just to see how polite and how far he could get him to go, Kakashi ordered him and Itachi the same drinks again. Itachi looked at Kakashi as if he was thinking of turning it down, but Kakashi smiled, his mask down.
“It’s my birthday.” He said as the drinks came to the table, Itachi was not even finished with his first.
“Remember when Yugao got you to drink her everclear to see if you could make a bigger fireball?” Kakashi sighed, thinking of the stupid things they did in their youth. At that time, it was as if Itachi was the only one who was mature enough to say no and not do things, but then there were tiny little pockets of when Itachi acted like a silly little teenager. Kakashi hadn’t seen it in years, but maybe he’d be able to sometime soon.
“Yes. I don’t understand how that stuff can be sold as spirits and not lamp oil.” Itachi shook his head, finally finishing his first drink. Kakashi smirked, looking at the bartender to get his attention. The white haired man ordered a bottle of what they were drinking and paid for the drink that Itachi didn’t finish.
“Come with me.” Kakashi said, pulling up his mask as he got up to leave the bar, bringing Itachi with him. They walked through the village from the bar, the civilians bowing their heads at the hokage and the heir as they walked past and into the Hokage’s living quarters. Itachi was confused, not sure why they’d be there in the first place. Kakashi unlocked the door and let him and Itachi in, taking their shoes off at the entrance.
Once they were inside, Kakashi motioned for Itachi to go and sit on the couch, somewhere comfortable for the both of them while Kakashi got the glasses needed for their drinks. He went over to the couch, sat himself down and poured glasses for the both of them.
“I think I kind of get it.” Itachi said, going to drink his whiskey now that he was used to the taste.
“You do want someone to spend your birthday with you, but you just don’t want your former team to do it.
Kakashi thought for a minute before he nodded his head.
“No offense but I'd be the fifth wheel and I don’t want to be any wheel.
“How would you be a wheel if Sasuke isn’t even in the village?”
“I am sure Naruto asked him to come back. I mean, I would appreciate what they would do for me but…. Cake? I’m almost fifty. That’s too sweet anyway. I Just want to sit and drink my drink and be quiet for once.
“Then why don’t you tell them?” Itachi asked, pouring himself another drink.
“Because Naruto would get disappointed, Sakura would talk about my liver and Sasuke would…. Well he wouldn’t drink but he would sit with me at least. Then there’s you.”
“Me?”
“Yeah, I’d want you to be there. Besides, Tenzou couldn’t make it. So couldn't Yugao. So it’d be just us.
Itachi nodded his head, taking another drink, but this time too big of one, making him cough. Kakashi pat hi back to try and help him, but Itachi used his hands to push the Hokage’s hands away.
“I”m fine.” He said, his voice slurred.
Kakashi laughed, putting his drink down to help Itachi up.
“Come on, up you get.” He couldn’t help but laugh. It had been a long time since he'd seen Itachi drunk and he wasn’t going to waste it this time.
Once Kakashi and Itachi were up and in the extra room, Kakashi laid Itachi down, covering him up with a blanket, but what surprised him the most was when he heard Itachi hum, he turned around and saw the Uchiha with his arms out as if he was asking Kakashi to lie with him. Kakashi chuckled even more but didn’t argue. He got under the blanket and let Itachi wrap his arms around Kakashi’s waist, Kakashi cuddling closer, more than surprised that he even was a cuddler.
“I won’t tell anyone about this.” Kakashi said quietly as Itachi closed his eyes for the night.
“Happy birthday.” He muttered, his breath evening out, finally falling asleep.
