By the time they got home, he was furious.
"You embarrassed me. In front of everyone. That poor guy's probably getting a talking-to right now over nothing—"
Dan set his keys down in the bowl by the door. "I was protecting you."
"I didn't need protecting!"
"He was flirting with you."
"I know. I was there. I wasn't flirting back."
"I know you weren't."
"Then why," Phil said, "would you make it into that?"
Something in Dan's face softened, and Phil felt the argument start slipping out from under him before a single word had been said.
"Because I love you."
Phil's anger faltered. He hated how fast it went.
"I know I overreacted," Dan said, stepping closer, voice dropping. "I do know that. But you don't know what it's like, sitting across from you and watching somebody look at you like that. You've never had to sit on that side of the table."
Phil looked at the floor.
"I trust you," Dan went on. "That was never the question. I don't trust them."
