   Summary

   "Lenora." Columbina was already kneeling beside the bars.

   Lenora opened her eyes. The floor beneath her cheek was cold. It took two shallow breaths before she found enough air to answer.

   "Alive." Too many eyes. Lenora's ears flattened.

   Her gaze moved around the circle automatically, counting bodies, distances, claws, teeth. Recognized scents. Recognized voices.

   Known did not mean safe. Her body did not care that she had slept between two of these cages without incident. Wounded meant vulnerable.

   Vulnerable meant danger. Columbina's face tightened. "That's not what I asked."

   Lenora's mouth moved before sound came. "Didn't ask."

   "Lenora." There was enough fear in her voice that Lenora stopped trying to be clever.
