Fantastical Meetings

Summary:

Korekiyo, a mysterious djinn, meets Shuichi, an average human, in the Hope's Peak University dining hall one day. They grow closer with time.

Notes:

Korekiyo gets misgendered (called "her") about ¾ of the way through the fic. Stay safe! Also, this is a universe where pretty much any magical creature and also Greek gods and demigods exist.

Work Text:

The modern world is a fantastical place, filled with many different types of beings and creatures: werewolves, vampires, demigods, djinn—and, of course, humans, just to name a few. There exists a university in the heart of Tokyo, built to foster unity amongst the best and brightest students of all different races: Hope's Peak University.

Among the freshman class this year is one Shuichi Saihara, a completely average (if talented) human. Unlike most freshmen, he knows his majors from day one—criminology and psychology, a natural progression from his work with his uncle. Coming from a town dominated mostly by humans, Shuichi has thus far been amazed by the massive diversity of the school. His own roommate, Kaito Momota, is a werewolf, which he is more than curious about, but he at least has the tact not to bombard the man with questions only a few days after meeting him.

His first day of classes has gone well, and he's in the dining hall for lunch. He walks past a group of people all pointing and whispering at something. Despite his distaste for gossip, he follows their gazes and is met with someone sitting peacefully alone at a table. Judging by the faint yellow glow surrounding their body, they're a djinn. Djinn are a relatively uncommon race, but not exceptionally rare. Despite both private and government efforts, however, djinn are still highly misunderstood and frequently discriminated against. Shuichi has never met a djinn before, and he would be lying if he said he isn't intrigued.

Perhaps against his better judgment, Shuichi gets his food and takes a seat across from the djinn. They look up at him and tilt their head curiously.

"Hello."

"H-Hi, um… Do you mind if I sit here?"

"Not at all. Might I ask about your intentions, however?"

"They're not mean, if that's what you're getting at. To be completely honest… I've never met a djinn before, and I was wondering if maybe you'd answer some of my questions. If you don't want to, of course, I can always leave you alone."

They cross their legs calmly.

"I suppose that's fine. But I'd like to ask you some questions in exchange."

"Oh, that's okay, but I can't promise I'll be particularly interesting. I'm just a normal human, after all."

"All humans are interesting to me. Perhaps we should begin by introducing ourselves? My name is Korekiyo Shinguuji, and I use they/them pronouns. I am a freshman intending on majoring in anthropology."

"Shuichi Saihara, he/him. I'm majoring in criminology and psychology. I'm also a freshman."

"What are your questions?"

"What made you interested in anthropology as a major?"

"It's been a lifelong interest of mine. I once read a book about anthropology with my older sister, and she encouraged me to pursue my interest in it. It's been my primary special interest ever since. What about your major?"

"Um, well, I was raised by my uncle, who runs a detective agency. I've worked with him since I was young, and I guess that sparked an interest in criminal justice in me."

He pauses as he watches them eat, the food seemingly disappearing behind their mask without them unzipping or removing it.

"Is… That some sort of djinn magic?"

"Eating? No, of course not. We simply must do it while in our human form to survive."

"N-No, the… Nevermind."

"You mentioned your uncle. What about your parents?"

"My parents travel frequently for work, so my uncle has been caring for me most of my life. I hardly talk to them."

"What about your family? Are you close with your sister?"

"My sister and I were very close, yes. As for my parents… We're civil with each other, but I am not particularly close with them."

"You 'were' very close?"

"She passed away many years ago, I'm afraid."

"Oh, I'm sorry."

"It's alright, you couldn't have known. Why do you wear that hat?"

Shuichi reflexively reaches up to tug it down, blocking his eyes.

"It's special to me. My uncle gave it to me. What is it like being a djinn?"

They pause to think, tracing the rim of their glass with a bandaged finger.

"Well, it's all I've ever known, but I suppose the prospect must be quite interesting to you. It's a bit lonely–not many people outside of our race trust us enough to befriend us–but that's never bothered me. I rarely use my powers on others, not out of some sense of guilt or morality, but simply because it's usually not necessary. I've been alive for about 215 years, and, if you did not know, the average lifespan for a djinn is usually 800-1,000 years. Does that answer your question?"

"Yes, thank you."

"What is it like being a human? Though modern anthropology focuses on all races, I find myself especially enamored with humans."

"Ah, it's nothing special. I can't use magic, nor am I resistant to it in any way. Um, we live for about 70-80 years on average… Humans are uncommon, but not rare, and just like every race, we have many different cultures and traditions. My experience as a human has been… Normal, I think? That's probably a pretty boring answer."

"I knew most of that already, but it still answered my question. Do you have any other questions for me? You strike me as the curious type."

"I do, but I'm afraid I have to leave soon. Um… Would you maybe want to exchange phone numbers so I could text you any questions I have?"

"That would be acceptable."

Korekiyo fishes their phone out of their pocket and unlocks it, handing it to Shuichi.

"Make a contact for yourself, and if you could, take a quick photo of yourself. It helps me remember who I am talking to."

Shuichi does as told, trying not to appear too shy in the photo. Once he hands their phone back, they send him a text.

"I got it. I'll save your number, too."

"Perfect. I suppose I'll see you in the future, then?"

"Hopefully, yes. Thank you again for your time."

"Of course. Thank you for the pleasant conversation."

Shuichi bows slightly, then collects his trash and dishes and walks away. He doesn't see Korekiyo in the dining hall at dinnertime, and during breakfast the next morning, he's too busy being forced to eat by Kaito to look for them. Fate is fortuitous, however, as that afternoon, when he enters the classroom for his abnormal psychology class, he sees a familiar face sitting toward the back.

Korekiyo glances up at him and gestures to the empty seat next to them in what they hope is a welcoming manner. Shuichi hurries over and sits down next to them.

"I didn't expect to see you here, Shinguuji."

"This class is a general education credit, and seemed fairly interesting. I assume it's a core class for your psychology major?"

"Yes, actually."

"Well, it's nice to have an acquaintance in this class."

"I agree."

The professor finishes setting up her projector and starts the class. She and the TA pass copies of the syllabus out and begin to explain it. Korekiyo scans the document with a hum.

"Starting the semester with a group project. How bold," they mutter. Then, they glance at Shuichi.

"Saihara? Woukd you like to partner up for the group project?"

"Oh, um, sure. Do you have any ideas for what diagnosis we should choose to present about?"

"I have a personal interest in schizoaffective disorder, if you'd like to write about that."

"Sure. I don't have any other ideas."

"After class, we can discuss when and where to meet."

Shuichi nods, taking out a notebook to copy down notes on the first set of slides the professor is presenting. A cursory look at Korekiyo reveals them to be doing the same thing. Once class ends, Korekiyo packs up their materials, then looks at Shuichi.

"When might you be available to work on the project? It's due in exactly two weeks, so we should not procrastinate."

Shuichi produces a planner from his bag, flipping it open.

"These are all the times I'm free."

Korekiyo looks over the planner.

"How about tomorrow evening, Friday afternoon, and the same times next week?"

"Sure. We can meet in my dorm, if you'd like."

"That works for me. I'll see you then."

The two part ways. Between that class and their first meeting, Shuichi thinks of several questions and texts Korekiyo, and they answer candidly. When Wednesday evening rolls around, Shuichi is grateful that Kaito is at kendo club. Having three people in the tiny dorm would be a little overwhelming, he thinks. He receives a text from Korekiyo announcing their arrival at the building, and he hurries downstairs to let them in.

"Good evening, Saihara."

"Hey, Shinguuji."

They pass Shuichi's RA in the hallway–he's a sophomore named Kiyotaka Ishimaru, if Shuichi remembers correctly–and witness him finding a ¥5,000 note on the floor.

"Pardon me," he announces, "Did either of you drop this?"

Korekiyo and Shuichi both shake their heads. He furrows his brows.

"I'll keep an eye out for anyone who may have lost it, but…"

"You should keep it," Korekiyo says suddenly, "I have a feeling you've earned it."

Kiyotaka blinks at them.

"I… Don't know about that, but I suppose if no one claims it, then I guess it can't hurt to keep it."

He walks away, and Shuichi gazes up at Korekiyo.

"You told me the other day that djinn can cause blessings and curses to fall upon people. Did you have something to do with that?"

"It's possible. I feel as if I should clarify: we can't just go around intentionally causing fortune or misfortune to follow someone. We are more like conduits of karma. If someone is of a race that can be affected by djinn magic, and they come within fifteen feet of one of us, something may happen as a result of a good or bad choice they made within the past week. Perhaps he showed someone kindness recently, or maybe it was simple luck. It's impossible for me to say."

"Oh, I see…"

"You seem disappointed."

"It's just that… Um, supposing we were to grow closer, I was going to ask you to bless my uncle, but that isn't really how it works, huh?"

"Saihara, are you befriending me for personal favors?"

"Not at all! I—"

There's a mischievous twinkle in their eye. Shuichi immediately relaxes.

"You know I have no ill intent with you."

"I jest, my friend."

Shuichi unlocks his dorm room and leads Korekiyo inside. One half of the room is barren of any decor or customizations aside from the bedspread, whereas the other has several space-themed posters and a small succulent on the windowsill.

"I asked my roommate if you could use his desk, so go ahead."

Korekiyo takes their bookbag off and sits at the desk Shuichi is not currently occupying. They unzip their bag and take out their laptop, unlocking it.

"I made a Google Slides presentation for us. Could you give me your school email so I can share it?"

Shuichi reads out his school email, then loads the page for the presentation when it's sent to him. It's currently blank, but he can see Korekiyo getting ready to type.

"We should choose the theme first, right?"

"Oh, I usually do cosmetics last for presentations, but that's fine."

Shuichi smiles nervously.

"We don't have to."

"No, no, I really don't mind. We should keep it professional and easy to read, though."

"Right, of course."

Shuichi scrolls through the preset themes, brows furrowed slightly.

"I'm stuck between the fourth one and the eighth one."

Korekiyo opens the menu for the themes.

"Hm. Fourth."

Shuichi clicks, setting the theme for the project.

"I think the easiest source to begin with is the DSM-5 itself, as it is available in full online."

"Right, good idea."

"The World Health Organization's ICD is also widely used in Japan, so we can reference that as well."

Korekiyo pastes two links in the chat, and Shuichi clicks them to find copies of the DSM-5 and relevant portions of the ICD. Korekiyo is already typing away on the presentation.

"You sure seem informed on this condition."

"I should hope so. I was diagnosed my senior year of high school."

"Oh, I didn't know."

"I don't usually include it in self-introductions."

They fall silent again, working on the project together for a while. Shuichi loses track of time until he hears the quiet beep of someone's ID being scanned and the door to the room opening. Kaito steps inside.

"Oh, you guys are still working. You must be the person Shuichi told me about! Shinguuji, right?"

Korekiyo turns around to face the werewolf before him. His tail is wagging, showing that he's excited about the meeting. Kaito extends a hand, and Korekiyo shakes it surprisingly firmly.

"You must be Saihara's roommate."

"Yep! Kaito Momota, aerospace engineering."

"My major is in anthropology."

"Oh, nice! I'm God-awful with social sciences, but I bet it's fun for someone who likes it."

"Do you need your desk back? I can leave early if I am in the way."

"Oh, no, I can study on my bed for a little while! You guys just keep doin' what you're doin'."

Kaito sets his backpack down beside his bed and opens it, taking out a notebook and an engineering textbook. He sits on his bed criss-cross and begins to review his notes from the day. Korekiyo turns back to their laptop. They and Shuichi work for another twenty or so minutes before Korekiyo closes their laptop.

"If you two would like to accompany me to the dining hall for dinner, I wouldn't mind."

"I ate before kendo club," Kaito answers. Shuichi hums.

"Um, I think I'd like to do some studying for another class before I eat. Thank you, though. I'll see you in class tomorrow."

"Alright. I will see you later, then."

They bow to Shuichi and Kaito, then exit the room with their belongings. Once they're gone, Kaito turns to Shuichi.

"That guy kinda creeps me out. Weird vibes. And what's with the mask?"

"I don't think they're so bad. They're just… Reserved."

"If you say so."

Kaito falls silent, focusing on his work once more. The rest of the evening passes, with Shuichi eventually finishing up his studying and getting dinner.

Shuichi and Korekiyo get a perfect score on their project. They continue to see each other in class and eat meals together on occasion, mostly when they aren't with their respective roommates. However, Shuichi soon realizes that he almost never sees them at social events or other places across campus. He considers that they may just not run in the same social groups, but he has a feeling that it's something else causing it. So, when Kaito invites him to a party hosted at a house off-campus owned by the family of a friend, Shuichi takes the opportunity to ask:

"Can I bring a friend?"

"That should be fine, sure! This place is, like, huge. His family's got money."

Shuichi nods, taking out his phone and texting Korekiyo to ask if they'd like to go to the party together that evening. They agree, and he finds himself excited by the prospect. Korekiyo makes for a very engaging conversation partner, after all.

Shortly before the party is set to begin, Shuichi meets with Korekiyo outside of his dorm. It seems they've gone all-out with their outfit, though they still stick with the general military gothic aesthetic.

"You know that this is just a college party, right?"

"It felt appropriate to dress up regardless."

"Ah, okay…"

"This is the first party I've been invited to in quite some time. You said it's being hosted by a friend of you roommate, yes?"

"Yeah, I think his name is Amami."

They begin walking, with Shuichi using the GPS on his phone to find the address. It's a good fifteen minute walk from the dorm, so he decides to strike up a conversation with Korekiyo.

"Do you drink?"

"Rarely, but I intend to tonight. Perhaps I will be able to witness some interesting behavior from others tonight. Humans are always so fun when inebriated."

"I don't like to drink much, personally. I'm not fond of how it makes me feel."

"What do you wish to get out of this party, Saihara?"

"Huh? Um, meeting new people, I guess. Honestly, I'm just going because Momota would never let me live it down if I skipped out."

"You two are rather close, yes?"

"We've bonded fairly quickly, yeah. We've even started working out with each other regularly."

"Interesting. But you still call him by his last name."

"It… Feels improper, otherwise."

"I see."

"Have you made any other friends since starting school here?"

"I suppose my roommate and I are something akin to friends, though it's hard to say with him. Other than that and you, no. But that's quite alright. I've never had many friends, and I don't consider myself lonely or anything."

"You haven't told me a lot about your roommate."

"He's an incurable prankster with a penchant for intentionally annoying people, and he's majoring in mechanical engineering."

"I wonder if he has any classes with Momota."

"You could always ask. His name is Kokichi Ouma."

"Maybe I'll bring it up at the party. Speaking of which, we should be getting close… Momota didn't tell me what the house looked like, so we'll have to hope we get the right place."

"Seems like a bit of an oversight on his part."

"He's forgetful sometimes, but I'm sure he was just excited."

They come up on a very large house, which the sound of music can be heard blasting from inside of.

"I think this is it. Um, let me just…"

Shuichi pockets his phone and knocks on the door. It opens a moment later to reveal a kitsune with a light green hair, as well as matching ears and a tail.

"Hey! Welcome in. I don't recognize you two, so I'll introduce myself. I'm Rantarou Amami."

Shuichi bows.

"Shuichi Saihara, Momota's roommate. And this is Korekiyo Shinguuji, sort of my plus-one. I hope that's alright."

"Totally. The more, the merrier! C'mon in."

He steps aside to let the two in. The inside of the house is just a grandiose as the outside, with marble floors and a large matching staircase in the center. There aren't too many people yet, but Shuichi is sure that will change with time. As soon as they enter, Korekiyo splits off, presumably in search of drinks or party guests to study.

"Is Momota here yet?"

"Yeah, got here about ten minutes ago. He's in the living room, last I checked."

Rantarou gestures to the mentioned room, and Shuichi heads over. He notices Kaito on the couch, talking to a blonde woman he doesn't recognize, and nursing a bottle of beer. Shuichi sits down on his other side. Kaito glances over at him and smiles.

"Hey, you made it! Where's your friend?"

"We parted ways at the door. I assume I'll see them again throughout the night."

"Oh, okay. Have you met Kaede Akamatsu? She's a music major, and a friend of Rantarou's."

Shuichi shakes his head, shaking the hand being offered to him by the woman. From her pointed ears and the metal covering certain parts of her body, he garners that she's an elf cyborg.

"Shuichi Saihara," he says, "I'm Momota's roommate."

"Kaede Akamatsu! It's nice to meet you."

Her handshake is firm and warm, and Shuichi finds himself hoping that his hands aren't too cold.

"So, why music? If you don't mind me asking."

"Not at all! I've always had a passion for piano. Played it so much that people used to call me Piano Freak in school," she laughs, apparently unbothered by the cruel nickname, "Do you know your major yet?"

"Criminology and psychology."

"Wow! Sounds way over my head! What got you into that?"

"My uncle is a detective, and I've helped him solve more than a few cases over the years."

"That's so cool! Any notable ones?"

Subconsciously, Shuichi reaches to tug his hat down a bit further.

"N-Not really… It's mostly just cheating spouses and lost pets."

"Really? Not what I would have expected, but I guess that makes sense."

Kaito perks up, rejoining the conversation.

"Hey, Kaede, that reminds me…"

Kaito's voice melds into the background noise of the room as Shuichi's eyes drift around, taking in the people sitting and standing near him. More people are filing in over time. He thinks he hears an argument off in the distance somewhere and makes a mental note to avoid that location for the time being. He wonders, momentarily, if Korekiyo has found anyone to speak with as well.

He hears his name being said and allows his focus to return to the conversation.

"…Like I said, I think he needs to add more decor to his side of the dorm room," Kaito says with a chuckle. Kaede smiles.

"Well, Shuichi, what do you think?"

"Ah, um… Well, self-expression is important to a lot of people, but I just don't think I want to put all that much effort into decorating a room I only spend part of the year in, especially since I'll just have to pack it all up between semesters."

"But that's no fun!"

Kaito pouts, taking another sip of his beer.

"Hey, you should get a drink. Nothing ruins a party more than being sober!"

"I don't really like to drink, but maybe I can get something non-alcoholic."

"Boo!"

Kaito teases with a grin. Shuichi smiles back lightly, standing up from the couch and making his way to the lavish kitchen. Someone has set up a game of beer pong, and he watches a few people play as he pours himself a plastic cup of Sprite. He hears a familiar voice and turns his head to see Korekiyo engaged in a conversation with Rantarou, who looks genuinely interested, and a dragon and cat morph who both look like they desperately want to be anywhere else. Judging by the way they're slurring their speech, Korekiyo has had more than a few drinks. It hasn't been long since they showed up; Shuichi has to wonder how they could already be so drunk.

"Now, the Venus of Hohle Fels is the oldest known Venus figurine. This one, of course, was discovered in Schelklingen, Germany—forgive my pronunciation. It is a six-centimeter-tall figurine carved from mammoth ivory, dated between 42,000 and 40,000 years old."

"Interesting. Do they know who carved it?"

Rantarou asks with sincere interest. The dragon hybrid excuses herself and hurries off, presumably in search of something else to do. The cat morph glances around helplessly.

"Specific information on that matter has been lost to time, but its age coincides with the earliest known presence of Cro-Magnons in Europe."

"Shinguuji!"

Shuichi apologizes as he squeezes between several people to step closer to Korekiyo. The cat morph takes advantage of the escape opportunity and scurries away. Korekiyo glances at Shuichi, then sighs in disappointment.

"I didn't even get to tell him about possible interpretations of the figurine."

Rantarou chuckles and pats their shoulder.

"There's always next time."

Shuichi smiles sympathetically.

"Um, maybe you should stick to more party-appropriate conversation topics?"

"What do you mean? This is quite a fascinating topic, why wouldn't—"

They blink, as if realizing something.

"Oh. I've been oversharing about my special interest. I suppose it makes sense that someone would want to have other conversations at a social gathering."

Rantarou takes a sip from his cup.

"I'm still happy to listen."

"Perhaps next time? I would like to spend some time with Saihara tonight."

"Oh, sure. Why don't we exchange numbers?"

"Alright."

Korekiyo and Rantarou do just that, with Rantarou making a peace sign in the photo Korekiyo takes for his contact. Then, they and Shuichi step away into their own little corner.

"Shinguuji, how much have you had to drink?"

"I was roped into some sort of game and ended up having several shots, as well as a significant portion of the vodka cranberry in this cup."

"I see. I just have a Sprite."

"I suppose there's nothing wrong with that. You did tell me earlier that you don't much care for drinking."

"I know that some races have special tolerances toward substances. Do djinn not have that?"

"Not at all, no. In my human form, I have quite a low tolerance, actually."

"Oh, okay."

Just then, someone bumps into Shuichi rather violently, causing him to spill his drink over the front of his shirt. They curse, then give a half-hearted apology before disappearing into the crowd once more.

"Crap, let me go find a bathroom and clean this up…"

Shuichi leaves Korekiyo in search of a bathroom. When he returns a few minutes later, Korekiyo is nowhere to be found.

"Hm."

Shuichi returns to the living room with the intent of talking to Kaito again, but he's also moved from his previous spot. In a stroke of luck, however, he finds Korekiyo sitting in a small circle of people on the floor, with a deck of cards in the middle. Shuichi decides to squeeze in as a last-minute addition to their game.

"Okay," says the person apparently leading, "This guy is the last person we're adding! Like I said, we're doing strip poker, but stopping at our underwear because this is some guy's house. Everyone on board?"

There are several shouts and cheers from the group. Shuichi shifts nervously. He probably should have tried to ask what was going on before joining.

"Okay, lemme just..."

The person shuffles the cards, then begins to deal them. Korekiyo speaks up.

"Might I make a request?"

"Uh, what is it?"

"Could we consider my mask to be undergarments? I would much prefer not to take it off."

"Undergarments," someone repeats with a snicker. The leader raises a brow, then shrugs.

"Not as much fun, but sure."

And so, the game begins. As it turns out, Shuichi is terrible at poker, and Korekiyo is too drunk to win. Soon, they're in their underwear, alongside people in various states of dress. Shuichi is a bit surprised by the overall lack of body hair on Korekiyo and chalk it up to them shaving. Clad in his binder and boxers, he feels far too exposed. Thankfully, it isn't long before a winner is declared, and Shuichi scrambles to put his clothes back on. Korekiyo dresses at a much more casual pace.

Shuichi and Korekiyo stand, intending to find some new source of entertainment, until a familiar voice rings out—it's the dragon hybrid from earlier. She's standing several feet away, gossiping with someone else.

"Can you believe he invited a djinn? Does he want to get cursed?"

"Oh my God, dude, they cornered me earlier and wouldn't stop talking about some… Doll or something that ancient humans made. Who does that?"

Shuichi's eyes widen. He looks back at Korekiyo, who looks like they're trying not to betray their upset.

"Shingu—"

They immediately turn, wobbling slightly in the process, and head for the kitchen. Shuichi struggles to keep up. By the time he catches up to them, they're pouring and downing shots of vodka as fast as they can. Shuichi frowns.

"Maybe we should leave," he suggests gently. Korekiyo drops their shot glass and curses quietly, picking it back up.

"Why would we do that?"

"Because… Because you're upset, and you could probably use some time to sober up before tomorrow."

Korekiyo turns to face Shuichi, stumbling, and frowns beneath their mask.

"Do you just want me to leave because I'm embarrassing you?"

They accuse. Shuichi shakes his head quickly.

"I'm just worried for your well-being."

Korekiyo hesitates, glancing around.

"Perhaps… We should go."

Shuichi nods, but as soon as Korekiyo takes a step towards the door, they nearly face plant. Shuichi hurries to throw one of their arms over his shoulder.

"Lean on me."

They don't try to argue as he guides them out, supporting them. Along the way, they notice a couple making out rather intensely under the tree in the front yard.

"Shuichi," they mumble, and he wonders when they became on a first-name basis, "Thank you. You're my best friend, do you know that?"

"Um, I didn't, actually…"

"You were the first friend I made here. You're the only person I talk to regularly, besides my roommate. You treat me with far too much kindness."

"I treat people how I want to be treated, generally."

"It means a lot to me."

"Well, the sentiment is appreciated."

"I'm sorry we had to leave early. I should have just kept my mouth shut. Sister always said I have a tendency to ramble."

"I'm not upset. I probably wasn't going to be able to stay too much longer, anyways. It's a lot of sensory input."

"I fear I may have drank too much."

"Do you feel sick?"

Shuichi watches as Korekiyo's body seems to visibly warble, and the air around them cools considerably.

"Stay with me," he adds. Korekiyo groans.

"Not imminently, but I do not look forward to tomorrow morning."

"You'll survive this. Maybe your roommate can check up on you."

"He's much more likely to laugh."

"I was afraid you might say that."

"I suppose he cares, in his own twisted way."

"You would know better than me."

"Shuichi, I really care about you."

"I care about you as well, Shinguuji. We're friends."

"Call me Korekiyo or Kiyo."

"I'm going to text you in the morning to make sure you mean that."

"Understandable."

They make it back to Korekiyo's dorm. Shuichi considers leaving them at the door of the building but decides to follow them up to their room, just to be safe. As they scan their ID to enter their dorm room, Shuichi gives a small wave.

"Get some sleep. I'll check on you in the morning."

Korekiyo nods, stumbling into their room and shutting the door behind them. Shuichi sighs, turning to make his way back to his own dorm.

Midterms are Hell, Shuichi is realizing. He hasn't been this stressed since the case that caused him to start wearing his hat in the first place. He and Korekiyo are studying together in the latter's dorm, as has become a regular activity for the two of them. Unfortunately, as Shuichi checks the back of his math textbook for the answers, he finds that most of them are wrong.

In a moment of weakness and overwhelm, his bottom lip begins to tremble, and he inhales sharply. He tries to take a few deep breaths, and Korekiyo notices.

"Is everything alright, Shuichi?"

Shuichi glances over at them, swallowing thickly.

"J-Just a little… Frustrated. I can't seem to get any of these statistics problems right."

"I may not be working on that right now, and we may be in different statistics classes, but I could always help you."

"Thank you, but I think I just need a little break."

"If you're feeling overwhelmed, I have an idea for how I could help with that as well."

"What is it?"

"Petting animals is a relaxing activity that promotes the release of 'feel-good' chemicals in the brain. Would you like to try?"

"You have a pet?"

"No, no. Let me show you."

Shuichi watches as Korekiyo transforms into a Borzoi, with fur the color of their hair. They step closer to him and nudge his hand with their snout. He blinks, then shifts his position and moves his textbook off of his lap. Korekiyo climbs into his lap and lays down, and Shuichi hesitates, then begins to pet their back slowly.

"You're very soft."

Apparently unable to speak, Korekiyo huffs softly and shuts their eyes. Shuichi continues to pet them gently, slowly relaxing as he does.

"Okay," he says, "You might have had a point about this."

Korekiyo opens one eye to gaze up at Shuichi, then shuts it again. The two of them remain in that position for a short while, until Shuichi realizes that Korekiyo has fallen asleep.

"Guess it's just as calming for them," he mutters.

Eventually, Shuichi feels the need to return to his work. A bit of guilt strikes him at the realization that he needs to wake Korekiyo up. He pauses, then shakes them gently. They make a disgruntled little dog noise and open their eyes.

"Sorry, but we need to get back to work."

Korekiyo sighs, then crawls off of Shuichi's lap. They transform back into their human form, stretching their arms up over their head.

"My apologies, Shuichi. I've been pulling more all-nighters than I probably should, recently."

"It's okay. Thank you for doing that for me. I didn't know djinn could transform into animals."

"Only dogs, serpents, and bugs."

"Oh, I see."

"And I had a feeling you were not interested in handling cockroaches. Cobras can be nice to look at, but not as pleasant to pet as dogs."

"That's also true."

"Regardless, I am glad that you enjoyed it."

Shuichi nods, grabbing his textbook and balancing it on his lap again. The door opens a moment later, and Kokichi enters.

"Oh, you two are still studying? Boring!"

"Yes, Ouma, and we'd appreciate silence," Korekiyo replies. Kokichi sighs dramatically.

"Fine, but I can only keep myself quiet for so long."

Kokichi climbs up onto his bed. Shuichi is occupying Korekiyo's.

"Oh, right, Kiyo, you said you could help me with these problems."

"I did. Can I see?"

Shuichi hands his textbook over. Korekiyo glances over the problems and his work, then begins to explain the material matter-of-factly. Shuichi nods along.

"Oh, I see. I think I know what I was doing wrong. Thank you."

"Of course. I have to use the restroom, but I will be right back."

Korekiyo stands up and heads to the ensuite bathroom connected to the dorm room. As if he just can't hold it any longer, Kokichi gasps.

"Oh my God, I can't stand this anymore!"

"If you really need to talk that badly, I guess we could move to the library or a study room."

"No, not that! Your obliviousness to their obvious crush on you!"

Shuichi's cheeks flush pink.

"Th-Their what?"

"They're head-over-heels for you! Anyone can see it! But they're too nervous to say anything, and it's killing me!"

Shuichi blinks, then frowns.

"That isn't a funny lie, Ouma."

"Is it really a lie, though? Just think about it."

Shuichi pauses, examining the interactions he's had with Korekiyo over the past few weeks. Sure, sometimes they stand a little close to him, and they've grabbed his hands or shoulders while explaining something a few times, and they have come just short of inviting him to do field work with them several different times…

Shuichi's blush darkens, and Kokichi cackles.

"You should hear what they say when you aren't around."

"What do they say?"

"Welllllll—"

The bathroom door opens, and Shuichi looks like a deer caught in headlights. Korekiyo blinks at him, then Kokichi. They sigh.

"What did you say now, Ouma?"

"Nothing! Just clued him in on how much you like him."

"How much I—?"

They freeze, immensely grateful for the mask covering their reddened cheeks.

"I-Is it true?"

Shuichi asks. Korekiyo swallows and nods stiffly, folding their hands in front of them. They speak quietly.

"I did not know how to approach the subject with you, so I… Simply didn't."

"Um, if it's any consolation… Your feelings aren't unrequited."

Korekiyo stares at Shuichi.

"You mean you…"

"Yes."

"Oh. Well, now I just feel a bit silly. Um…"

"Ask him on a date, stupid," Kokichi demands.

"R-Right, would you like to—"

"Absolutely, once midterms are over."

Korekiyo smiles beneath their mask.

"Of course. Now, then, we should get back to work."

"Ah, right…"

Korekiyo sits back down at their desk, typing away at their laptop. Shuichi continues working until his assignment is completed, then stands.

"I should get going. Thank you for studying with me again."

"It was no problem. Thank you, as well."

Shuichi bows slightly, then puts his textbook away in his backpack and leaves. A few moments of silence pass before Kokichi speaks up.

"So, are you gonna thank me for getting you together?"

"I did not give you permission to share that information."

"But you never would've confessed, and it would've haunted you for the rest of your life!"

"Unlikely."

"But can you say for sure?"

"I'm not praising you for this."

"You're so mean!"

Kokichi's lip begins to wobble, and Korekiyo sighs.

"If you start fake crying, I am going to move to the library. A place I know you've been temporarily banned from for this behavior."

"You wouldn't sic security on me!"

"You know I would."

"Shinguuji is cruel and evil!"

"Maybe so."

Kokichi sighs.

"You can't have any fun anymore. Because of woke."

"Right, of course. That's why."

"Whatever. This conversation went exactly how I predicted. I'm gonna do literally anything else."

"You could try studying, since we are in the midst of midterms."

"Hm… Nah! I'd rather play Assassin's Creed!"

Kokichi digs his Switch out and lounges across his bed with the device. Korekiyo, relishing in the silence, returns to their studies.

Midterms pass, with both Korekiyo and Shuichi receiving adequate grades in all of their classes. Korekiyo has texted Shuichi and invited him to go on a walk in a local park. The late October air brings a chill, but it's nothing that can't be compensated for with a jacket.

Korekiyo is wearing a V-neck black button-up with a leather jacket with numerous decorative clasps over top, as well as a long black skirt and knee-high boots with several-inch-tall heels. Their face is painted with pearl white foundation, black eyeliner and eyeshadow, and black lipstick, hidden beneath their usual mask. They glance over at Kokichi, but he beats them to the punch. The imp swishes his tail lazily as he speaks.

"Don't ask me how you look. Military gothic is sooooo 90s. And you're too skinny for my tastes. I like 'em buff or plump! So, in short, you're ugly as fuck, but I bet Saihara will be all over you."

Korekiyo deadpans.

"Your honesty is always appreciated," they drawl sarcastically.

"Yeah, yeah. Just get outta here before you're late. You spent a million years on that stupid makeup."

Korekiyo checks the time on their phone and nods.

"I will see you later."

"Try not to fuck it up! I'm no good with comforting people, and we all know you're definitely a crier."

Korekiyo elects not to continue the banter, instead deciding to head out to meet Shuichi outside of his dorm. They stand patiently, arms crossed over their chest. A few minutes later, Shuichi emerges from his dorm building. He 's wearing a black jacket, unzipped, and a white button-up with black khakis and dress shoes.

"Were you waiting long?"

"Not at all. Shall we?"

Korekiyo offers their arm, which Shuichi shyly takes. They begin to guide him past the dorms and off campus.

"How was your day?"

They ask. Shuichi hums lightly.

"It could have been better. I really struggled with a quiz in one of my classes today, and the dining hall was out of the food I wanted before I arrived. But… It's better now that I'm with you."

Shuichi smiles shyly. Korekiyo chuckles.

"That's very sweet, Shuichi."

"I mean it."

"Well, thank you."

"How was your day, Kiyo?"

"It was alright. I spent most of it waiting for this evening to come. I've been quite eager for our date."

Shuichi's smile widens, and he blushes.

"Really? That makes me feel special."

"You are special, Shuichi. I don't invite just anyone on dates, you know."

There's a playful twinkle in Korekiyo's eye. Shuichi chuckles.

"I'm not used to getting so many compliments."

"I would be glad to keep issuing them."

"Y-You don't have to…"

"But you are so cute when you blush."

Shuichi's face reddens more and he looks away.

"Ah, that's…"

Korekiyo smiles more under their mask.

"I apologize; you're just so much fun to tease."

Shuichi looks back at them.

"I'll just have to find opportunities to tease you, too, then."

"Are you issuing a challenge?"

"I suppose I am."

"Challenge accepted. Do your worst, Shuichi Saihara."

Shuichi grins, determined to find a way to make Korekiyo blush before the end of the night.

"So, boring question, but what do you like to do in your free time?"

Shuichi asks.

"I read and crochet. I learned from my sister."

"You two were close, right?"

"Immensely."

"How long ago did she pass?"

"Just over fifty years. It was Christmas Eve, in fact, so please don't blame yourself if I become dejected or unresponsive during winter break."

"Can I ask what killed her?"

"A lung infection caused by severe cystic fibrosis."

"Djinn can develop genetic illnesses?"

"We are susceptible to most of the same illnesses and chronic diseases as any other humanoid race, despite our long lifespan. We may temporarily escape them by taking our wind or fire forms, but this is a short-term solution."

"I'm sorry. You must still miss her."

"I do, yes, but we don't have to talk about that right now. We are here to have a good time, yes?"

"Right."

They arrive at the park and continue to follow a paved trail that shoots off from the sidewalk, soon coming to a fork.

"Left leads to food trucks, and right leads to a small lake and playground. There are benches along the way to both," Korekiyo explains. Shuichi nods.

"Food trucks? I'm a little hungry."

"Of course."

They turn left, and Korekiyo reaches for their wallet from their back pocket. They drop it on the ground and kneel down.

"You can keep going. Pick a truck and I will join you momentarily."

Shuichi nods again, walking over to a truck that serves sandwiches. The employee glances at him and leans down to speak to him.

"Are you alright, son?"

"Huh?"

"That weirdly-dressed djinn… Is she trying to hurt you?"

"They aren't doing anything. We're on date."

The employee glances at Korekiyo, who is approaching the truck.

"Right… Just say the word, and I can call the police."

"I'm fine."

Korekiyo joins Shuichi and gently takes his hand.

"Order whatever you like."

Shuichi nods, still frowning, and orders. Korekiyo glances over the menu, then does the same. It doesn't take them long to receive their food, and they find a bench to eat at.

"Is something the matter, Shuichi? You seem upset."

"No, it's just… The elf running that truck assumed you were trying to hurt me."

"Because of my species, I assume?"

"Yes."

Korekiyo sighs.

"I'm sorry."

"Why are you apologizing?"

"It must be exhausting, being viewed like a helpless prey animal at all times because you are human."

Shuichi sighs as well.

"It is, but it's not your fault. You treat me like an equal."

"I do my best."

Korekiyo begins to eat through their mask again. Shuichi does the same.

"At least the sandwiches are good, even if the employee was speciest."

"I often find that hatred doesn't affect one's cooking."

Shuichi barks out a laugh, then covers his mouth. Korekiyo smiles.

"Sorry," he apologizes. Korekiyo shakes their head.

"It was my intention to make you laugh. I quite like the sound."

Shuichi blushes again. Then, getting a bold idea, he leans up and presses a kiss to their temple. At first, Shuichi thinks nothing happens, but then he notices the tops of their ears turning pink.

"I did not realize you were ready for kissing."

Shuichi hesitates.

"Was that not okay?"

"No, it was perfectly fine. I enjoyed it."

Shuichi nearly sighs in relief. They both continue eating their food.

"What else did you want to do while we're here?"

"We could walk to the lake, talk, and/or people-watch."

"People-watching outside of cases makes me feel like a creep. Maybe we could go to the lake? Do you think there are any fish?"

"There are fish and birds, but we have nothing to feed them, so I can't guarantee they will appear."

"We could ask that sandwich truck driver if we could buy some bread."

Korekiyo shakes their head.

"Bread can cause intestinal blockages in fish and holds no nutritional value for ducks. We shouldn't."

"Oh. I didn't know that."

"It's alright. Let's just go watch the animals instead."

Korekiyo stands up and offers a hand to Shuichi again, who takes it and also rises. They make their way back to the fork, then head right and come upon a small lake. There are a few families and a couple picnicking nearby, but it's peaceful and picturesque.

"Shuichi, look. There are ducks."

Korekiyo points to two ducks on the water, a male and a female. Shuichi lights up.

"Oh, they're so cute."

"Do you like animals?"

"Yes. Birds, especially. I always wanted a parrot growing up, but my uncle didn't want to have to clean up after it."

"Parrots are often lifelong commitments, from what I understand."

"Some species, yes."

"I've always like cats and snakes, but my parents refused the latter on grounds of disgust."

"But, can't djinn turn into snakes?"

"That was precisely my argument, but they didn't care."

"You could get one now. Terrarium pets are allowed in the dorms."

"Are they? I didn't know that."

"They also allow emotional support and service dogs and cats."

"Interesting. I will keep this in mind."

Shuichi pauses.

"Korekiyo, stay very still."

Shuichi slowly reaches for his phone. Korekiyo furrows their brows.

"Why?"

"There's a butterfly on your head."

"I see."

Shuichi takes a few photos, but then it flies off.

"May I see?"

Shuichi turns his phone around to face Korekiyo, who examines the photos.

"I think you look cute," he says. Korekiyo blinks.

"Not many people would describe me in such a way."

"Well, I would."

"I'm flattered."

Shuichi smiles, then reaches for their mask.

"Can I?"

"Not here. Perhaps back at your dorm?"

Shuichi blinks.

"Ah, I think Kaito might be there…"

"We'll simply ask him to turn away."

"Okay. Do you want to go now?"

"If you would like to."

"Alright."

Shuichi and Korekiyo turn away from the lake and begin to head back towards the dorm, making casual conversation along the way. Upon arriving and seeing that the lobby and common area are empty, Korekiyo pulls Shuichi aside and lowers their mask, then presses their lips together. Shuichi kisses them back with a bright red blush. They hold it for a moment, then pull away.

"Shall we?"

"Um, I thought we were coming here to kiss… What now?"

"We could cuddle. I don't want Ouma to witness that, but we can presumably safely do so in your dorm room."

"Yes, Kaito won't bother us."

"Lead the way."

Shuichi leads Korekiyo to his room, unlocking the door.

"Shuichi! How was your date?"

"Um, actually…"

"Hello."

"Oh, hey! What are you two gonna do here?"

"Cuddle," Korekiyo replies simply. Kaito nods, his fluffy ears twitching.

"Okay! Have fun! I'll be studying."

Shuichi and Korekiyo slip their shoes off, then climb into Shuichi's bed. They lie down facing one another, with Korekiyo wrapping one arm around Shuichi and using the other to play with his hair.

"Um, Kiyo?"

Shuichi tries gently.

"Yes?"

"Would you… Like to be partners? Officially?"

Korekiyo blinks, then smiles.

"Asolutely."

Shuichi shyly buries his face in Korekiyo's chest.

"You're my first," he says quietly. They hum.

"Really? But you're so delightful. I'll try my hardest to be pleasant for you."

"You don't have to try very hard."

"Thank you, Shuichi."

They fall silent in each other's arms, listening to their breathing and the occasional turning of a page from Kaito. There, Shuichi and Korekiyo are content to stay forever.
