Summary
If Lando is completely honest with himself, he doesn’t know where he found the courage to drop that “simply lovely, huh?” over the radio at the end of the race.
His friendship with Max is good - built back when Lando was just a rookie under the Dutchman’s wing - but the lingering feeling that they’re only friends because Max was always better than him hasn’t completely gone away.
Winning in Zandvoort is his second victory ever, after years of jokes and his - now set in stone - nickname, “Lando No-wins”. He’s one of the few omegas on the grid, and the only one driving for a top team. Everyone underestimates him because he’s too thin, too small, too cute to be a real contender in an actual Championship.
This victory is a sort of revenge for all those years of silent submission - to the FIA, to other drivers, to team principals. This victory is personal.
Or: an insolent team radio after winning at Zandvoort. A furious Max Verstappen at his hotel room door. And a lesson in hierarchy Lando won't forget anytime soon.
