   Summary

Their house is small. The fire is adequate. Fordyce has nothing useful to say about wedding nights, which Mary considers a personal failing on his part. Tom Hayward has wanted to kiss her since she argued with him about Cowper. He does considerably more than that. She calls it unscientific to stop at one example.
