Work Text:
Since Sharpness and Jude had formed a team, they had become very close.
They had pleasant conversations, but their best talks happened at bedtime. They were much deeper, warmer. They slept in the same bed, since it was cold in winter, and they wanted to conserve materials.
Sharpness made him feel protected, both physically and mentally. He felt something warm in his chest every time the blonde logged into the server. But sometimes he feared that after all the time they spent together, Sharpness would decide to betray him.
He had never asked Sharpness if he felt the same way about him—it was stupid to talk about those things. They were grown men, not little girls talking about their feelings and blablabla. Surely Jude didn't actually feel affection for Sharpness. He must have inhaled too much redstone, and now he was delirious.
In any case, Jude appreciated every special moment he had with him. Like this one.
"Sharp, do you think someday we'll be enemies again?" Jude tossed and turned in bed, turning his back to the other boy.
"Of course not! We're teammates, dude. Why are you asking?" Sharpness moved closer, turning to look at Jude, who kept his back turned.
"It's just that I..."
Jude turned over, ending up face to face with Sharpness, their noses almost touching. Oh my god, since when had Sharpness gotten so close? Jude swallowed. The blonde didn't react; he just waited for Jude to finish his sentence.
"I-I'm afraid we'll betray each other. And we'll go back to how we were before." After speaking, Jude lowered his head to hide his lightly flushed cheeks, but Sharpness grabbed his chin, forcing him to look him in the eyes.
Their eyes met.
Sharpness's eyes shone in the moonlight, full of tenderness and sincerity. His smile was soft and understanding, as if he perfectly understood why Jude felt that way—and partly, he knew why.
"Jude, listen to me."
Sharpness's hand moved to Jude's soft purple hair, and then to his droopy ears, caressing them softly as if Jude were the most fragile creature in the world, and Sharpness was afraid of breaking him.
Which was partially true.
Jude's eyes shone with hope, waiting for Sharpness's next words.
The blonde let out a long sigh that Jude couldn't interpret, so he just assumed Sharpness was tired from today's long fights.
"I understand your concern, Jude, and I want to tell you one thing."
Sharpness stopped caressing Jude's ears and moved to the hare's cheeks and jaw.
"If someday I betray you, I'll let you kill me a hundred times in a row, I promise you."
Sharpness's words came out almost like a whisper, something almost inaudible, but Jude heard them as if they were a love confession.
It was true that Sharpness didn't directly say he wouldn't betray him. But Sharpness would never let himself be killed by anyone.
Never. That should mean something, right? If he promised, it must be because he was planning not to do it.
Although it might just be an empty promise that would never be fulfilled, as Sharpness always did. Or he might have just told Jude that so he would let him sleep already. Or there was his favorite option, the one he chose to believe:
Sharpness was being totally sincere with him.
"Do you really mean it?" Jude asked in a small voice, while his eyes began to water, but he held back the tears.
"Of course. We're teammates after all, right?" Sharpness hugged Jude tightly, making him curl up against his chest.
Teammates.
Jude felt a tightness in his chest—not the warm kind, but rather as if something bitter and cold were stuck there. Well, it was nothing; it was just very cold outside today, and he had probably caught a cold.
"Thank you, Sharp," Jude murmured, allowing himself to shed a few tears that he had been holding back.
From that day on, Jude couldn't stop thinking about Sharpness differently. Before, being with the blonde had been wonderful, but now it felt even better. He felt loved and cared for, as if he were the most precious thing to Sharpness, and that only made Jude even more nervous and try to pull away from him, but it was impossible to pull away from someone like him.
Sharpness also felt something for Jude—what he described as "intimate companionship." The blonde had never been in a relationship with anyone and had few social skills, since he had been raised only to fight. They never taught him these things. But he knew he loved being near Jude. He always held the rabbit's hand when Jude was distracted.
Okay, now let's go back to the present.
Jude was showing Sharpness the traps, in case they were ambushed and Sharpness wasn't ready to attack—he could use Jude's traps as a weapon.
They came to one in particular, one for which Jude had a backup trap within the trap, just in case Sharpness decided to betray him. He had designed it a few weeks before the conversation he had with Sharpness. He no longer needed the backup trap, because he knew Sharpness would never pull the lever.
"Okay, well, do you see that lever over there? If you pull it, whoever's standing here will fall into the trap."
"Oh, cool." Sharpness looked at the lever the hare had pointed to, and then looked at Jude.
After looking at Jude for a few seconds, the blonde smiled and pulled the lever.
The floor opened beneath Jude's feet, and he fell straight into the execution chamber.
Jude was completely frozen, his ears perked up as he tried to process what was happening. His heart stopped, and his eyes stared blankly, unable to react to his situation.
After a few seconds, Sharpness came down, unsheathed his sword, and began stabbing Jude.
"Sharpness, why!?"
Sharpness didn't answer. The bastard just smiled wider, as if this were some kind of show for him.
Was Jude a joke to him?
Then there was no other choice. He didn't want to do it, but if he meant nothing to Sharpness, then Sharpness meant nothing to him either.
"Why would you think I'm that stupid!?"
Jude swapped his netherite chestplate for an diamond one, and in the blink of an eye, Sharpness disappeared from his sight, falling into a hole with a pointed dripstone waiting at the bottom.
Conexion was impaled by a stalactite.
_Tai: LOLLL
N00b: Why does this guy keep getting trapped every time, omg
ParkerGameBrain: Deserved
Conexion: Jude, can we talk
Conexion: Pls, it was an accident, i didnt mean to :(
Jude felt like his heart was going to burst out of his chest. Cold sweat ran down his back and neck, his ears were still perked up, and his pupils darted in every direction except toward the communicator.
The days that followed passed slowly, as if his mind could only replay that moment over and over. Sharpness's smile as he betrayed him gave Jude headaches. Jude started talking badly about Sharpness to everyone he saw; no one was spared from Jude's complaints, but Sharpness didn't know—because he was an idiot who didn't realize anything.
"Dude, seriously, Sharpness is a HORRIBLE teammate. Like, bro, when we were trying to catch someone, he would start playing with my ears as if I were a fucking doll, and in the end, we ended up getting killed because he never took it seriously. Can you believe it!?"
Cow gave a long, frustrated grunt before nodding frantically.
"Yeah, dude, you already told me, I know." Cow wanted to die right now.
Jude spent about twenty more minutes complaining about Sharpness, while his friend forced a smile and tried not to kick him out of his base immediately. Cow didn't know how he had so much patience with that idiot.
"Okay, then that stupid blonde goes and—"
Jude's sentence was cut short by a loud sound coming from the stairs in his base. It seemed someone had fallen into his security trap.
Jude's ears perked up, and his nose twitched with irritation at being interrupted.
"Hey, shouldn't you go see who—"
"Shut up and let me finish my sentence!" Jude's scream echoed throughout the base, an echo that could be heard kilometers away.
His breathing quickened, and it was clear he was irritated at not being able to finish his sentence.
"O-okay, okay, sorry!" Cow jumped away from the sofa with a start at the rabbit's sudden mood change.
"Okay, well, then that stupid blonde goes and tells me, 'Oh, Jude, I would never betray you, we're teammates. If I ever betray you, I'll let you kill me a hundred times for you!!' Like, are you fucking kidding me!? You can't tell me that and then pull a fucking trap lever at my feet while laughing at me, fuck!"
Cow noticed Jude's eyes getting watery, but he didn't want to make things worse, so he didn't say anything.
Cow didn't know what to say. He had never seen Jude like that. He stayed silent and reached out his hand to pat him on the back.
After a few minutes of awkward silence, the sound of a lava bucket falling was heard inside Jude's base, specifically at the entrance.
Conexion tried to swim in lava.
Conexion left the game.
_Tai: He ragequit LOLLLLL
What?
Jude and Cow went to check the stairs. When they got there, they found Jude's security trap open—someone had probably come to bother them and fallen into the trap.
But on the floor were remains of lava about to disappear, and someone's scattered loot.
Jude noticed a netherite sword, a very familiar one.
Sharpness's Excalibur.
Jude's pupils darted around, trembling and looking anywhere, while his lower lip trembled and tears threatened to spill from his eyes. In an impulsive move, Jude decided to jump down the hole to collect Sharpness's things before they despawned.
Which was a mistake, because he didn't even have a bucket of water in his inventory.
JudeLow fell from a high place
Nufuli:Why is everyone dying today lol
ParkerGameBrain: ofc Jude dies when Sharp dies
Sword4000: Never beating the allegations, lol
After respawning in his bed, Jude asked Cow to leave him alone for a moment. Cow obliged, but first he helped him recover his items and Sharpness's, although the rabbit had no intention of giving them back.
Jude layed on his bed. The one he used to share, which still smelled of expensive shampoo and worn armor.
He hated that smell.
After reflecting for a bit, he thought of something. If he hated that smell so much, those ugly, stupid cat-printed sheets that the blonde had chosen, those moments shared with him in this place...
Why not just burn the bed?
That would help him get over his loss. Well, it wasn't a loss, of course—not having Sharp as a teammate was a good thing, not something to lament. It was just a way of speaking.
Jude jumped up and took out the flint and steel he always carried. He didn't have it because he needed it himself, but for Sharpness. The blonde had poor night vision, so he always carried torches. But he never remembered to place them. Jude always told him he was an idiot for that, so he crafted flint and steel to provide light whenever Sharpness needed it.
Then he would destroy the flint and steel too.
He struck it and brought it close to the bed. But it didn't burn. His hands were trembling so much that the flint and steel fell to the floor, setting the wooden floor on fire instead of the bed.
Jude reacted quickly and grabbed a bucket of water before the fire spread. Okay, it was clear he was a bit nervous now; he would do it tomorrow.
Jude slept on the floor that night.
After that, Jude continued sleeping on the floor. One day, Parker woke up earlier and went to wake up his friend, whom he found on the floor like a dead animal. Parker started shaking him by the shoulders, trying to get a reaction. Jude woke up irritated and slapped Parker.
Now they were sitting at the kitchen table. Jude had prepared a salad, two sandwiches, and orange juice to share.
Parker noticed that the rabbit barely touched the food, which was strange—he always ate everything in less than five minutes to get back to his room as soon as possible and have time to design more traps.
Today his plate was untouched, and his gaze was directed at nothing in particular. It didn't express sadness; it just seemed like he was thinking, but Jude never frowned when he was thinking.
"Jude, are you okay, dude? I haven't seen you eat anything. What's wrong with you lately?" Parker asked while putting a piece of his sandwich in his mouth, which Jude chewed, annoyed.
"It's just that a week ago, Sharpn—"
"You're talking about Sharpness again!? Dude, get over it already! He's been following you around every day trying to get you to forgive him, and you just ignore him! Move on or forgive him once and for all," Parker interrupted.
"Let me finish!" Jude shouted, grabbing his ears and pulling them back.
Parker nodded and fell completely silent.
"I—yesterday I was complaining about Sharp to Cow, and well, I think Sharpness didn't know I was talking badly about him, and yesterday I think he heard me and... He killed himself and then left the server."
Parker's eyes widened in surprise, and then he pinched his own cheek.
"Sharpness Conexion? Killing himself on purpose? God, that must have really affected him. I've never seen him kill himself on purpose."
"Yeah, I know, you don't need to explain it, idiot! But well, he deserves it. It's not like I really care. I hope he leaves the server forever and never comes back."
"If you didn't care, you wouldn't talk so much about him."
"That's not true, it's just th—"
Parker shoved a spoonful of salad into Jude's mouth to shut him up. Jude kept talking, but nothing could be understood with his mouth full. Parker just nodded, pretending to listen to his muffled words.
"Okay, okay, I get it—you don't care about Sharpness, I get it, shut up!"
"You're only saying that to shut me up! Let me finish."
Jude paused for a long moment, looking at the ground before speaking, and Parker looked at him expectantly.
"He used to matter to me. Not anymore. Because he's a traitor, and he hates me, and I hate him."
"Oh, Sharplow breakup..."
Jude let out a sharp shriek and then shook his friend by the shoulders.
"Shut up already! Well, let's see, uh, how do I explain this... I mean, he..." Jude let go of Parker and looked away, covering his face with his hand.
"We were good teammates. I felt a very deep connection with him, and I thought it was mutual, I mean... He promised me he wouldn't betray me, you know? He said he would stay by my side. We slept in the same bed, cuddling; we healed each other's wounds after fights; we even bathed together."
Parker raised an eyebrow at that last sentence, and Jude's cheeks tinged with light pink.
"And well, I thought I meant something to him. But I see I don't."
"But he's been asking for your forgiveness every day! How can you not matter to him?"
"How the fuck can someone who promised to stay when no one else ever promised me, and then stab me in the back when I had already given him everything, matter to me!?"
Jude's scream silenced the entire base. His nose twitched frantically, and his ears flattened against his skull.
Parker didn't know what to say. He had no answer to that. He understood why Jude thought that, but at the same time, he thought Jude's reasoning was quite illogical.
"And besides, he already replaced me with another teammate. When someone matters to you, do you replace them with just anyone barely three days after leaving them? No, right?" Jude exclaimed in a small voice; he seemed about to burst into tears.
"Jude, I think th—"
The violet-haired boy got up abruptly from the chair, making the wooden legs screech against the floor. He headed for his room and slammed the door.
Parker gave a long sigh and looked at his friend's bedroom door, not knowing whether to intervene.
Jude slammed the door behind him. He couldn't take it anymore. His throat hurt from holding back that bitter feeling.
He sat at his workbench, where he had all his unfinished trap blueprints, and threw them all onto the floor. He grabbed a pencil and a fresh sheet of paper and started drawing plans for a new trap. While drawing things that not even he understood, Jude couldn't hold back his tears any longer and started spilling them onto the paper, soaking it.
After crying uncontrollably for a while, the hare threw the plan into the trash.
Jude felt his heart pounding like a bomb about to explode. His head hurt from crying so hard, so he decided to go to sleep.
The hare lay down on that bed he hated so much and wrapped himself in the fluffy blankets. They gave him a pleasant feeling of warmth, but not as pleasant as the warmth that person had produced in him.
Then he remembered the first gift Sharpness had given him.
The blonde had written him a poem about their friendship. It was very corny and seemed like it was written by a 10-year-old, but you could see Sharp's effort to make something nice for him. Jude hadn't given it much importance, but he knew all the words of the poem by heart.
After that, the gifts to Jude only increased. Sharpness gave him his best enchanted sword, wildflowers that he had picked himself from the field, stupid drawings of the two of them holding hands (which Jude had hung in his room).
And the most important one:
A month ago, Jude was very stressed. Almost no one was falling into his traps, so he was almost out of loot. He had no resources left, and everyone kept ruining his traps.
In a moment of stress, Jude yelled at Sharpness that he wished Sharpness were a dog so he could only hear barks instead of nonsense.
Sharpness wasn't offended by that. He just left silently, with a smile on his face, and after a few hours, returned to Jude's base.
With a puppy in his arms.
"What the fuck is that!?" Jude took off his safety goggles and his grease-covered gloves and approached the blonde.
"It's a dog."
Sharpness held out the puppy so it would be at Jude's eye level. The dog licked Jude's nose, and Jude snorted in annoyance, although deep down he thought it was cute.
"And why did you bring a dog?" The rabbit raised an eyebrow.
"You told me you wished I was a dog, so you would only hear barking instead of my stupidities. So I thought: 'What if I give him a dog identical to me? Surely Judey would be very happy!' And well, that's it. What do you think?"
Sharpness brought the little dog closer to his face and rubbed his cheek against the dog's while making puppy eyes.
"I don't like it." Jude turned around. God, he was having a cuteness overload!
"What!? Why!?" Sharpness brought the puppy closer to Jude's face.
"It's uh..." He looked at the dog and then at Sharpness. "It's very ugly, I don't like it."
"What!? It's adorable! How can you call our son ugly!?"
Jude's ears perked up suddenly when he heard the word "ours."
"W-wait, wait, what do you mean by ours!?"
"Well, he's our son. We adopted him. I'm the dad and you're the mom."
Jude felt his brain overheat. He tugged his ears while trying to process what Sharpness was telling him.
"D-do you know that only couples can have children, right?"
"Aren't we a couple?"
The rabbit jumped in surprise. His nose twitched frantically, and his tail began to wag uncontrollably, which he tried to hide, but Sharpness had already seen his tail move and let out a small laugh.
"Are you stupid!? Only romantic couples can have children!"
"Oh."
Sharpness lowered his head, pouting, and looked at the little dog he was holding.
"Then I'll return him."
"No, wait, what!?"
"If I can't have him with you, I don't want to have him with anyone."
Jude let out a long sigh and then took the dog into his arms.
"Okay, okay, he'll be our son. Stop making that sad face."
"Can we call him Tom?"
"Okay."
The other's emerald eyes shone. Sharpness gave him a tight hug and a small peck on the cheek, and then one to the little dog.
From that day on, they had started taking care of him together, like a family.
But he had already gone weeks without seeing Tom.
Jude thought about messaging Sharpness. He missed seeing the dog (and also Sharpness), but when he opened the chat, he realized that Sharpness hadn't been online since yesterday, which was strange, because he was always online when Jude was.
He sat in silence, thinking about all the moments he had spent with that stupid traitor.
His sobs grew louder and louder. Why was he crying over a traitorous rat like Sharpness? He had never brought him anything but problems—he was clumsy, sensitive, and cloying.
He tried to silence himself by putting his hands around his own neck, which only made it hard to breathe, but at least it kept him a bit quieter. He didn't want anyone to hear him.
He could only pray that no one had heard him crying for that idiot.
The next morning, Jude woke up with dry tears on his cheeks and swollen eyes. He did everything he could to hide them, but it was impossible.
He got dressed and got ready to go out. He had to set more traps; he was running out of resources, so today he would go out to look for redstone and slime balls.
But when he left his room, he found half the server population in his living room.
When Jude came out, all the guests turned to look at him—some worried, some happy, and others with faces like someone had died.
"What are you all doing here!?"
"We invited them," Cow and Parker raised their hands. "We explained everything that happened with Sharp."
"Why did you do that!? It's not that important, it wasn't necessary." Jude shouted, making some guests cover their ears.
"Look, Jude, first of all, please don't shout, and second, the truth is, we're all very worried about you. Lately you've been looking terrible, and now that we know why, we've all come to the conclusion that..." Lopezz said while playing with her tail.
Jude didn't hear the last sentence. The feline seemed afraid to say it out loud.
"To the conclusion of what?"
"To the conclusion that you..." Lopezz murmured again.
"I can't hear you, dude!"
"To the conclusion that you like Sharpness, idiot!" Tai shouted as loud as he could, making some guests complain.
What!? How could he like Sharpness? Sharpness was a man, and they were both straight guys. Did Parker really organize all this just to make Sharplow canon!?
Jude's cheeks burned, and his tail started wagging nervously.
"You're all crazy! What I had with Sharpness was something platonic!"
"Yeah, yeah, sleeping and bathing together is very friendly, dude," Parker exclaimed sarcastically.
"It was something very deep, b-but platonic, okay!?" Jude looked at the ground, embarrassed.
Maybe they were right. Maybe he fell in love with Sharpness, and that's why this was affecting him more than anything. Maybe that's why he missed his voice, his face, his affection so much...
And maybe that's why sometimes he dreamed that Sharpness kissed him.
But he would never admit it out loud, so what he had to do now was deny it in front of everyone, or his reputation would be ruined.
"I don't like Sharpness because, uh..." Jude paused, thinking about what to say next.
"Because I already have a partner."
The whole room was left with their mouths open. No one spoke for a few minutes.
"And that partner is Sharpness?" N00b asked.
"What? No!"
For the next 90 minutes, the guests spent trying to guess who Jude's partner was. What they didn't know was that he didn't exist.
After a long time, they gave up and decided to go back to their routines.
Three knocks were heard before the door to his room opened. It was Parker.
"Hello."
"You don't have a partner, right?"
Jude let out a small, playful laugh.
"No."
Parker smiled, sat next to Jude, and put his arm around Jude's shoulder.
"How are you going to confess to him?"
"First, he has to apologize properly. Then I'll consider letting him be my boyfriend. I won't settle for a poorly made apology."
"Sounds good to me. I'll send him a message saying you're willing to forgive him. Surely he'll log on right away."
Conexion joined the game.
A few hours later, Jude was in his base, fixing one of the traps that was in the main room, when he heard the sound of pistons opening coming from the stairs.
Jude went to see what—or who—it was. He looked down at the hole where the execution chamber was.
There he was. Sharpness, with a bouquet of wildflowers (which Jude assumed he had picked himself earlier) and some kind of apology letter in his other hand.
"Jude, please, let's talk! A little bird told me you were willing to talk to me." Sharpness put on a hopeful smile and used his best sad puppy eyes.
How Jude had missed that look.
Jude knelt next to the hole, willing to hear Sharpness's apology, but he wouldn't let him out until he apologized properly.
"Talk now or I'll kill you," Jude said, taking a button out of his inventory.
"O-okay, okay! It's just that I..." Sharpness scratched the back of his neck. Jude thought he saw a slight blush tint the blonde's cheeks, but it was surely just his imagination.
"I b-betrayed you because I felt that if I didn't do it, I would be betraying you in a worse way, okay? And—"
"Wait, wait, what are you talking about? What other kind of betrayal?" Jude's ears wobbled on top of his head as he spoke.
"I told Tai about my feelings of companionship for you, and he told me that wasn't something platonic. He said it w-was something romantic."
"O-okay, and what does that have to do with betrayal, idiot!?"
"You're straight, right? You've said it many times, a-and I felt I would be betraying your trust because you've treated me so well, and I suddenly go and say these things when you're straight. It would embarrass you, so I thought that if I betrayed you physically, I would stop feeling something for—"
Conexion fell out into the void.
_Tai Awww Sharplow reconciliation
Conexion: JUDE
Conexion: PLS LET ME EXPLAIN MORE I NEED YOU PLEASE
JudeLow: just come to my base
After gearing up again, Sharpness returned to Jude's base, now avoiding the stairs.
"Jude, forgive me, really, I-I didn't know how to tell you and—"
"I can still kill you 99 times."
"What?"
"You promised me that if you betrayed me, I could kill you 100 times."
"Oh. B-but you're not going to comment on what I told you, or...?"
Jude smiled and raised his chin proudly. "When I'm done killing you 100 times, maybe I'll grant you the honor of being my boyfriend."
"Really!?" Sharpness suddenly stood up straight, and a big smile appeared on his lips.
"If you behave well, yes, and then I want to go see Tom. I've missed him," Jude said, grabbing him by the wrist. He was going to take him to the arena.
"Of course!"
