    Summary

Some are born destined for greatness — to be heralded and remembered. Others are born only to walk beneath the same sun as the extraordinary, and to plunge into despair when they learn that death does not discriminate.

Valarr sat in the shadowed corner of the room. The softest of breezes stung his eyes. They must be quite a sight: red rimmed and bloodshot as they were after a sleepless night. Yet he refused to close them, setting them ablaze onto the sleeping body atop the only bed in the chamber.

He felt hollowed out, abandoned in the overgrown garden of his own grief. He could feel it taking root, too — this rotten, parasitic thing inside him. It clawed at his chest and beat against his ribs.

He had given it a name, and it would never leave the body it now called home.
