“Ash,” he began quietly. “I would like you to know I am not planning on working for another Golzine. For what it’s worth, I regret the past.”
“You don’t need to feel guilty, Blanca. You were a tool of the mafia. There was nothing you could’ve done, right?” His eyes, when they finally fixed themselves on Blanca, were dark and guarded. Barbed wires charged with electricity, wrapped around all the words he’d never say.
“There wasn’t,” Blanca answered, even as his conscience turned cold eyes on him. That was the truth, painful in its clarity. Even if he’d escaped with Ash, there was no other world in which either of them could exist.

Blanca faked Ash's death and saved his life. Keeping Ash alive, on the other hand, posed a far bigger challenge.
