Work Text:
Ryland tried to be as quiet as he could when he snuck back through your bedroom window. He had expected you to be fast asleep in bed, like you usually were when he returned from patrol. He glanced over at your shared bed, totally expecting you to be tangled in the covers, only to be surprised by the lack of you in the sheets. The bed was exactly the same as it was when you both left for work that morning, only the addition of your rumpled work clothes.
He tugged off his mask, tossing onto the bedside table, stripping his suit down to the waist and grabbing his sleep shirt. Ryland ran a hand through his flattened hair and picked up his glasses from where the lay on his pillow. He stared at your side of the bed for a moment, wondering where you possibly could be.
He padded silently out of your shared bedroom, yawning. He could hear the quiet hum of the tv so he wandered into the living room, catching sight of your figure on the couch. Ryland sighed a breath of relief, at least you were still at home. He went round the couch, seeing you conked out, buried in a pile of blankets and pillows. he bit back a smile at how cute you looked. Ryland looked around for the remote, finding it tucked under your head. He gently extracted it, careful not to wake you. You grumbled as he shifted you, making him freeze.
His shoulders relaxed as you just snuffled into your pillow, body relaxed. He switched off the tv, whatever sitcom you were watching still playing in the background. All his shuffling must have woken you from your slumber because when Ryland turned back to you, you were blinking up at him, sleep clinging to the corners of your eyes.
An expression of panic crossed his face as you stared at each other before he practically flung himself at you, pressing kisses all over your face. You sputtered a laugh at his sudden attention. Your hands came up to run through his messy hair, letting him smother you in kisses.
When Ryland finally pulled back to breathe, you smiled up at him, eyes crinkling, "No injuries? You're okay?"
He nodded, suddenly breathless at the sight of your smile, "Yeah, I'm totally fine. Slow night. You waited up for me?" You looked sheepish at his question, tugging at your earring, "Yeah..Tried to. I don't like not knowing if you're safe or not."
Ryland's expression softened and he sat up on the couch next to you, kissing your cheek, "M'sorry."
You shook your head with a fond smile, cupping his cheek, "Nothing to be sorry over my love. I'm glad you're helping people, I'm just a worrier." Ryland chuckled, leaning into your touch, "Let's get to bed then, hm?" You nodded, eyes already dropping with exhaustion. Ryland smiled and scooped you up, letting you rest your head on his chest as he took you back to your bedroom.
