Work Text:

Stan had rushed from Gravity Falls, Oregon to Piedmont, California. Well as much as you could for an 8 and a half hour drive.

When he got to the hospital, he did all the paperwork then he was forced to sit in the waiting room waiting for it to finish.

“Stanford Pines?” a nurse called.

Stan looked up. “Here,” he said.

“Great! Are you here to see Mrs Pines?” she asked him.

“Yep.”

“Alright, follow me.”

He did so and ended up in a hallway with 4 rooms on both sides.

“She's in room 618, in there,” the nurse said before walking away.

Stan went in and saw two people each holding a small child each.

“Whoa. Twins?” Stan asked.

“Hi Stan. I'm glad you could make it,” Mrs Pines said seemingly tired, looking at the door.

“Stan!” Mr Pines said. “Wanna meet the girls?”

“Of course I do,” Stan told him.

“That's Mabel,” he said, pointing to the baby in Mrs Pines arms. “And this is Macie.”

“She has weird dots and lines on her head,” Stan noted.

“That's just her birthmark.”

“It looks like someone spilt hot sauce on her forehead,” Stan said.

Mr Pines sighed, deciding not to say anything about that.

At that minute, Mabel — whose eyes were open — make a little noise.

Mrs Pines, Mr Pines and Stan all gasped softly.

“Do you want to hold her Stan?” Mrs Pines offered.

Stan cleared his throat. “Sure.”

Mrs Pines gave Stan the small girl, which he held gently. Mabel stared at him for a few seconds before making a happy sounding noise.

Stan smiled at the child, she was so small.

Macie just rested in Mr Pines arms as Stan held Mabel.

A knock interrupted them.

“Excuse me, Mr Pines” the nurse from before said. “But visiting hours are up for now. You need to leave unfortunately. It’s meal time for patients.”

Now Stan would have done some illegal thing like a smoke bomb there but Mabel's little noises made it seem like she was telling him not to. So he compiled.

“Alright, alright. Bye you two, good luck with them,” he told to Mr and Mrs Pines. “Hopefully we'll meet again,” he said to the twins.

It was almost 13 years later when Stan got a call in Mid-May.

“Hi Stan!” Mrs Pines said over the phone.

“Hey.”

Two loud voices were heard in the background.

“Dipper! Give me the TV remote! I wanna watch Dream Boy High!” one of the twins screamed.

“No! You've watched that like 100 times!”

“Better than your nerdy show!”

“Ghost Harassers is way better than Dream Boy High! At least it's not just colourful people solving every thing with friendship!”

The twins kept yelling at each other as Stan and Mrs Pines talked.

“Me and the twins father are having… issues. I need them out the door. Dipper overheard us fighting. Can you take the twins for the summer if that's ok?” Mrs Pines begged.

“Uh sure,” Stan agreed. He looked around where he was currently standing in the kitchen — which was probably violating multiple health and safety codes for the average kitchen. He'll get Soos to patch it up.

“Thank you. Also,” she lowered her voice a bit. “Dipper's going through a bit of a phase. She keeps calling herself a boy. Just thought I'd let you know.”

“Ok whatever,” Stan replied.

“The twins should be there May 31st.”

A scream interrupted her and sounds of skin hitting skin happened.

“Girls! Don't hit each other!”

“Mum! We're not 2!” The one that Stan guessed was Dipper said.

“Bye Stan! Talk to you soon.”

She hung up before Stan could say bye.

“Dipper! Mabel! I was told about you two,” Stan said when the twins stepped off the bus and everyone was in the Stanleymoblie.

“Really?” Dipper questioned, playing a game on some handheld console.

“What were you told?” Mabel asked with a grin.

“Well, your mum told me a bit about your personalities, hobbies, interests, allergies, most things a Great Uncle needs to know about his great niece and nephew!”

At that last word, Dipper looked up from his video game. A small smile appeared on his face before it faded back to a netrual expression and he groaned.

“You good there kid?” Stan asked him.

“I just died in my game on the final level,” he replied.

“Ooh it's the hard level as well,” Mabel added, looking over Dipper's shoulder.

After more driving, they finally got to the Shack.

“'Mystery Hack?'“ Dipper read.

“The S falls off all the time. I've seen more time with it off the sign than on.” He gestured to a giant S which was laying on the roof — not attached to the sign like how it should have been.

“Where are we sleeping?” Mabel asked, ignoring the previous conversation.

“I've cleared out the attic with the help of the employees, Soos and Wendy!”

At that moment, a redheaded girl peered out from inside the gift shop.

“Mr Pines? Are you giving a tour at 7:30 in the morning?” she asked.

“It's my niece and nephew,” Stan said. “It's summer break and their parents decided they needed fresh air.”

She came up to Stan and talked to the twins. “Hey dudes. I'm Wendy,” she said.

“Hi!” the boy said, voice cracking.

“That's Dipper.” Stan pointed to the boy and then the girl. “That's Mabel.

“Is this why you paid me and Soos to clean the attic while you watched TV?” she asked him.

Stan cleared his throat. “Details,” he said, waving her away.

“I'll see you two around the Shack,” she said, walking off.

“Dipper, this is so exciting!” Mabel cheered, placing her suitcase on the ground and jumping on one of the beds.

“Yep,” Dipper grunted. “Absolutely amazing.” he was on the stairs, dragging up three suitcases. “Can you come get your suitcase?”

Mabel looked at the door and sighed. She did as Dipper requested before bellyflopping on her bed.

“I claim this one!”

Dipper — who was now in the room — leaned against the wall. “Sure.”

“Kids!” Stan yelled. “Who wants Stan-cakes?”

The twins glanced at each other before dashing out the room and down the stairs.

They got to the kitchen and sat at the table where Stan was across the room.

“Hi Grunkle Stan!” Mabel cheered.

“Hey pumpkin,” he replied.

“Why do you call me pumpkin?” she asked.

“You were orange as a baby.”

“Ok!”

Mabel accepted that answer without question and dug into one of the pancakes on a plate.

“Wait, if you knew us as babies then does that mean--” Dipper started.

“Yes, I know you're… what do you call it?” Stan replied.

“Transgender?” he offered.

“Yeah, that. Don't worry kid, I'm not one of those people to be a jerk about identities.”

Dipper smiled softly.

“Now, don't think our little heart to heart means you get out of gift shop duty tomorrow,” Stan informed the twins.

“Aw come on Grunkle Stan, really?” Mabel groaned.

“You two cost me way to much already, sorry kids. It's only a couple hours as well.”

“I don't want to go home,” Dipper said.

“You have to. Don't worry kid, I'm not gonna kick the bucket in the next year. Hopefully,” Stan said, hugging Dipper as he sat on the old man's lap. It was the final night before the twins left and Dipper was supposed to be in bed up in the attic. He had woken up and came downstairs where Stan was watching TV. “Plus, haven't I been teaching ya boxing?” Stan asked.

“I'm not good at it. I know I survived the literal apocalypse but it'll suck home,” the boy said.

“Stay there Dip. I've got something for you.” Stan got up and grabbed a random box from his room and a pair of brass knuckles. They were his favourite but he wasn't going to be using them for a bit. He put the brass knuckles in the box and covered it in clean toilet paper.

When he returned to the living room, Dipper was kicking his legs as he sat up in the chair, waiting for Stan.

“Here,” Stan said, placing the box in Dipper's lap.

Dipper removed the toilet paper from the box and gasped. “Grunkle Stan! I can't take these, they're illegal!”

“Since when have you or I cared about laws?” Stan questioned. “Seriously though, take them. I won't need them.”

Dipper sighed, clearly knowing he wasn't going to get anywhere fighting Stan. “Fine. But I won't use them unless I absolutely have to.”

“Yeah I kinda expected that. Knowing you anyways. Now get to bed, you have a long day tomorrow,” Stan said.

“Night Stan.”

“Night Dip.”
