Summary
It was not a loud lesson. No one had ever sat him down and explained the hierarchy in so many words. The understanding had arrived instead in small, repeated gestures: the way the elders’ eyes moved past him and settled on Hiroto without hesitation; the way conversations about the future of the clan always assumed a single name; the way even the servants straightened a fraction more when Hiroto entered a room. He had learned to read those currents the way other men learn to read scripts.
