Summary
The Republic says twelve children are missing from Worlport.
Maria D’Avenant knows there are thirty-seven.
At sixteen, Maria is a thief, a rooftop runner, and the reluctant protector of a handful of street kids on Ord Mantell. She has no use for authorities and even less for Jedi- especially the painfully proper young Padawan who catches her watching their arrival.
Qui-Gon Jinn, however, listens. And when him and Obi-Wan Kenobi begin pulling at the threads Maria has already found, a simple kidnapping investigation starts to reveal something far older and far larger than any of them expected.
The case will follow them long after Ord Mantell. Across years, worlds, wars, separations and reunions, Maria and Obi-Wan keep finding themselves on opposite sides of the same unanswered questions: a hidden organization, an ancient civilization, a lost bloodline, and the reason some people have been searching for Maria since before she knew there was anything to find.
But ancestry is not destiny.
And Maria has never been good at letting other people decide who she belongs to.
