Dungeons & Dragonets

Summary:

Welcome to the Cross-Worlds Convention, where you can meet anyone—from anywhere, or any time! All Oryn wanted to do was run a one-shot tabletop session, just relax and roll some dice with his friend Jeri. Neither of them were prepared for the players who arrived to play their game: four dragonets who had never played D&D before, but already had opinions! Will Oryn's campaign survive contact with his new players, or will all his plans go up in smoke?

Notes:

So, fun fact about me: I never wrote fanfic. It just wasn't part of my personal creative journey. I had a tough enough job wrangling my own characters to worry about anyone else's! So why did I, at today years old, suddenly wake up one morning and decide "I think I'll write a fanfic today"? Couldn't tell you! But that's what I did.

This is a silly cross-over fic where two of my own characters teach the WoF dragonets how to play D&D. Originally posted in the Wings of Fire Fangroup on Facebook.

Oryn is one of my original dragons—he's a cave dragon, which is a classic fairy-tale dragon. In WoF terms, he would map closest to a WildWing. Just a dragon-shaped dragon. Some cave dragons have NightWing-esque powers; Oryn does not. He's just a normal guy. (And a DM.)

Jeri is a human botanist and tabletop player. She appears in my second book.

Chapter 1: The Cross-Worlds Convention

Chapter Text

They had arrived at the Cross-Worlds Convention! Oryn looked around eagerly, the supplies for his station clutched in his claws. All around the convention hall were all manner of creatures, in all shapes and sizes, and from all over time and space! The Cross-Worlds Convention was the sort of place you could meet anyone, from any place, from any time!

And he was going to run a tabletop session here!

Jeri scrambled beside him, her arms full of rulebooks. "Oryn! Slow down a bit. My legs are a lot shorter than yours." Indeed, the dragon dwarfed her. She only came up to around his elbows!

"Sorry, I'm just excited. Isn't this place great?"

Jeri took a moment to look around. "It really is! How did you hear about it?"

Oryn scratched his chin. "Hmm. I don't really remember... Well, we're here now, so let's make the most of it! My station should be right over here."

Oryn started unpacking his boxes, setting everything up just so. His game-master's screen, his notes, his supply of dice, all the mini-figs for the enemies his players would face, oh and the character sheets! It wouldn't do to forget the pre-gens! Oryn had come prepared. No need to get bogged down in character creation. His players would be able to sit right down and start playing!

"Jeri, would you put this sign up?" He handed the woman a posterboard.

Jeri looked at it while she hung it up at the entrance. "The Tomb of Deadly Death?" she inquired, hiding a smile.

Oryn winked. "It's just a simple little dungeon crawl. I think the name sets the tone, don't you?"

"You said you had pre-gens?" Jeri asked as she walked back toward Oryn. "Wow, this table is kind of huge, now that I see it. Dragon sized I guess."

Oryn slid the last mini into place and squinted down at his companion. "Yes, I do have pre-gens. Here, get on up here and you can look through them." He extended his hand, Jeri stepped into his arm, and Oryn gently lifted her onto the table.

Jeri sat down cross-legged in the corner and started flipping through the character sheets.

Oryn's eyes were glued to the door. Soon, his players would arrive!

The dragon spotted them before long: four dragonets. They looked a bit like cave dragons... except not quite. Oryn could see the moment they spotted him and his sign. They squinted at it, whispered excitedly among themselves, and then hurried over. Oryn straightened, ready to welcome them. As they approached, he studied them.

The dragonet in the lead had icy blue scales and serrated claws. He glared at Oryn with a decidedly sour expression. Oryn checked his sign-up sheet. Winter.

Right beside Winter was a dragonet with sandy scales and a scar on the side of his face. Qibli, Oryn's roster supplied.

The dragonet behind them was the strangest of all of them. She had mottled yellow and black scales and... Two pairs of wings? How unusual. A pair of glasses perched on her nose. Cricket.

And bringing up the rear was a dragonet with golden scales. This one was staring all around her in wide eyed astonishment and nearly tripping over her own claws. And that must be Sunny, Oryn thought. That's all of them.
