Chapter 1: Her Oddsmaker

Chapter Text

They had done it, done the impossible. Maysilee Donner and Haymitch Abernathy had won the Quarter Quell. They had lost so many allies in the process that it haunted them. Louella, Lou Lou, Woodbine… but at-least the people they cared about most of all in the world were safe and sound in Twelve.  Wyatt Callow and Lenore Dove Baird were safe from the Capitol and they would forever be safe from them. So now here Haymitch and Maysilee sat in the tribute apartment. It felt so empty without Lou Lou or Woodbine. “I hope she’s okay..” Haymitch muttered, playing with his flint striker for the 100th time that day. “She probably hates us.” Maysilee deadpanned “and so does Wyatt.” Haymitch didn’t reply, knowing it was horrifically true.

Snow sat in-front of them, a sadistic smile growing on his face as he sipped his warm milk. Maysilee and Haymitch sat across from, scowling at their president. Maysilee sat with her arms crossed, while Haymitch sat next to her, his face blank, his mind was running a marathon. “Hello you—“ Maysilee cut him off with a glare “Cut to the chase Snow.”  Maysilee snapped at him, only to warrant a laugh from the stoic President. “Snappy as ever, Ms. Donner.” President Snow said, suppressing his laughs. He took another sip of milk, giving himself a milk mustache. He wiped his face with a hanker chief from his coat pocket, then faced his attention towards the two tributes.

“Geese mate for life, did you know that? Biology isn’t really taught in the districts as much as other subjects are. When one of them dies, they never find love again in their short, measly lives.” Haymitch perked up at the mention of geese, thinking of his rare and radiant girl. “It be a shame if your two lovers tragically died the day you came back from the games.”

…

“Lovers?” Maysilee asked, trying to hide the fact that her oddsmaker and Haymitch’s rare and radiant girl were their’s. They had not mentioned anything about their lovers to the Capitol, knowing that President Snow could use them against her and Haymitch. “Oh please, save the lies for someone that believes them.” Snow smiled. “What are you going to do to her.” Haymitch said, snapping out of his zoned out state. He couldn’t bear the thought of someone hurting her, let alone killing her. He couldn’t imagine it, how could he? Haymitch had imagined their entire lives together, why would he need to even think about that. But now, it was a high possibility that the Capitol was going to hurt her. “I’ll kill them both if I have to, Im not above killing children, Mr. Abernathy.” Snow said casually, smiling at them. Maysilee and Haymitch’s stomach sunk, there hearts pounding, minds running on the countless ways he could hurt them.

“Don’t you dare!” Maysilee shouted, standing up instinctively, Haymitch just stared at the President, rage coursing through his veins. “Don’t touch him! Don’t even lay a finger on either of them! Or I swear—“ Maysilee was cut off by Snow’s laugh, he probably found it amusing that he could cause them such distress. “Now now Ms. Donner, there is a way to keep both of them safe. If you play my game correctly.” He emphasized the correctly on his sentence, staring both of them in the eye, his dull blue eyes haunting Maysilee and Haymitch. “What’s your game.” Haymitch asked, hyper focusing on him, while Maysilee was visibly fuming with hate.

“It’s rather simple, even you two can’t mess it up. You two must pretend you are in love.”

“WHAT!” Maysilee shouted, lunging at President Snow, Haymitch threw his arm out in-front of her, stopping her from reaching the President of Panem. “Now Ms. Donner, don’t you want to keep your Booker Boy safe?” Snow said with a devilish grin “and Mr. Abernathy, don’t you want your Covey girl safe and sound?” The president grabbed four flowers from the desk of the Heavensbee mansion, then crushing two of them in his weak palm. It obviously represented Maysilee and Wyatt and Haymitch and Lenore Dove. The tributes both went silent, thinking of what to say, until President Snow interrupted their thinking. “Its simple, play my games, by the rules, and you and your lovers win it all. But if you don’t, then the District 12 grave site will need an expansion after this year’s quarter quell.” Snow jeered at them, taking another sip of his glass of milk. Maysilee and Haymitch stood there, minds whirring with different thoughts of how to go about this dilemma. Haymitch and Maysilee love Lenore Dove and Wyatt to their very core, the thought of betraying them in such a way made them want to cry. But they couldn’t, not in front of President Snow, they would rather die than give him the satisfaction of their tears. Haymitch remembered Lenore Dove running over the hill, calling out to him as the train zoomed by, leading them all to their deaths. She looked so beautiful, so ethereal, and now he has to hurt her to protect her. He couldn’t bear it, but for her, he would do anything for her to live. His world would lose its color if she was dead.

Maysilee felt vomit climb her throat, her eyes filled with hate. She wasn’t in love with Haymitch and never will be, she only loves one person in this entire world, and thats Wyatt Callow. Maysilee felt dizzy at the thought of hurting him, his life was already hard enough. She couldn’t bring herself to betray him like that, but if she didn’t, he would be dead. Maysilee would rather have Wyatt hate her and alive than loving her and being dead. A world without Wyatt was not a livable world, she would burn down the entire Capitol if they even looked at Wyatt.  “Tick tock Mr. And Mrs. Abernathy.” Snow said, his voice laced with sarcasm. Haymitch and Maysilee flinched at the name, they felt like they were about to vomit on the floor. The name “Mrs. Abernathy” was Lenore Dove’s and forever Lenore Dove’s, but President Snow had given it to Maysilee, just like that.

“If we do it, they’ll be safe. Safe from the Hunger games, safe from the hangings, safe from it all?” Haymitch said, terror floating in his words. “Thats right.” President Snow nodded, killing off the last bit of his milk. “Do we have a deal then, Mr. And Mrs. Abernathy?” He was saying that just to get under there skin. To make both of them crack underneath the weight of it all. But Haymitch and Maysilee were stronger than people thought, and they wouldn’t let an old geezer hurt them or their loves

“Deal.”

Haymitch and Maysilee sat on the train, close to each other, but not close enough to touch. The Capitol has been raving about the two victors and how their love story shaped this year’s Quarter Quell. It was the first time in history that two people had won the games, let alone a Quarter Quell. They had won it all, but what was the point anymore? Wyatt and Lenore Dove most certainly hated both of their guts. Haymitch thought about his rare and radiant girl, how she was probably crying in their meadow with her geese protectively surrounding her. Her dark curls swaying in the wind as tears ran down her face, she was a beauty, a beauty that Haymitch’s eyes will never forget.

Maysilee could just imagine Wyatt crying, just the thought made her heart shatter into a million pieces. She only ever saw Wyatt cry once, and it was absolutely heartbreaking just to witness it. It was two days into the 49th Hunger Games, and it was late into the night. Maysilee and Wyatt sat behind the Hob as he wept into her shoulder, the music being somewhat muffled. Wyatt had just set the odds of a little boy’s death, whether he would sub-come to his injuries or the silver beetles would get him.  And Wyatt had set the odds for the beetles to kill him, but fate took a turn. The small boy from 8 was killed by two things. The small boy screamed as the beetles ate his flesh, and then, a career tribute came by and sliced his head off. Wyatt cried about it for hours and hours that night, saying how his only gift is used for evil. Maysilee reassured him that his gift with numbers is useful and not something evil, it was only evil because of the way his father manipulated it. But now, after the Quarter Quell, Wyatt definitely was bawling his eyes out on his creaky bed, his tears soaking his small bit of a stubble growing on his chin.

Maysilee sat there, eyes unmoving from the screen. The only thing that had been playing for the past few days was the footage from the Quarter Quell. Every channel you could possibly flip to was just her and Haymitch, kissing in the arena. They had kissed once in the arena, cause thats all they could stomach. That stupid, disgusting kiss was only for a second, and it was the worst second of Maysilee’s life. She could feel the vomit crawling up her throat and the urge to pull away becoming stronger. Haymitch was no different though, he also hated that kiss in the poisonous arena just as much as his “girlfriend” did. They both sat there on the soft, comfortable, purple couch of the train, watching them on screen.

It was a clip of their post-game interview, they were sitting on the white, egg shaped, chair. Maysilee threw her legs across Haymitch’s lap playfully, Haymitch grinned and chuckled lightly before pushing her legs off of him.

“So, Haymitch, Maysilee, how does it feel to be the first ever duo victors of the hunger games?” Caesar Flickerman pressed, leaning forward in his chair. He had his flashing smile on, his emerald green hair clashing with his red suit and gold lips. Haymitch forced himself to pull Maysilee closer, feeling sick as he did so. “It feels great, and honestly, it feels even better when I won with the boy that I…” Maysilee paused, looking at Haymitch, her eyes dull and her rosy pink lips slightly parted. Maysilee didn’t love him. She could never love him in such a way, never in her life. Her heart only belonged to her Oddsmaker back in Twelve, the person that knew her front and back, inside and out. Haymitch wasn’t even close to what Wyatt was to her. Wyatt Callow had her entire heart, and that would forever remain true until the day she dies. Even then, she’ll still be loving him in the place people go after they die. “Love..” Maysilee finished, planting a chaste kiss on Haymitch’s lips. It was gross, it was disgusting, it felt shameful.

It was shameful.

Even if they were only doing to protect the ones that they love, it was wrong, so wrong.

“Very good! I hope that the duo victor life is treating you well. Now, I have a question for you Haymitch, a serious question, so don’t go being a rascal about it!” Caesar Flickerman grinned, an uproar of laughter rang through the entire room, Haymitch and Maysilee laughed along with them. Haymitch slightly cringed at the Capitol people’s laughter, snot and tears running down their distorted make up, people jumping out their seats, and the joke wasn’t even that funny. Haymitch waited for the laughter to die down before asking what the crazy man’s question is. “Well, Caesar, ask away. But I can’t make no promises about being a rascal.”  Haymitch grinned, winking at Maysilee, wanting to absolutely vomit all of his breakfast, lunch, and dinner on stage. “Thats just who he is.” Maysilee teased, her lips pulling into a forced smirk, but her eyes told different story. Maysilee’s eyes looked lost and sad, she had tried her best to cover up it with makeup, but no amount of mascara in the world could hide how she truly felt. Plus, even Wyatt used to say to her…eyes don’t lie.

“Even in the sheets?”

Haymitch and Maysilee snapped their heads toward Caesar, Maysilee’s mouth opened while Haymitch’s lip pressed into one thin line. Haymitch’s eyes narrowed as Maysilee’s eyes were big enough where the people in the back could see them and their blue color. Haymitch felt the vomit in his throat come back up again, threatening to escape. How could he say that, in-front of so many people. The crowd erupted in laughter once more, looking more disgusting each time. The Capitol “people’s” eyes were bulging out of their heads, even more snot running down their faces. The smell of pee and alcohol rushed Haymitch and Maysilee, trying not to look absolutely scared out of their minds. The crowd jumped out of their seats, some people collapsing and others screaming at the top of their lungs. It was a horrible sight, watching them laugh at their own expense.

“I’m just kidding with you two! Now my question is Haymitch…” Caesar laughed while pointing towards the big screen, then a clip flashed across the expansive screen. It was a clip of Haymitch and Maysilee in the arena, sitting next to each other, watching the sunset over the Arena. He then whispered something into her ear, his hand covering mouth so that others couldn’t decipher what he was saying to her. “What exactly did you say to Ms. Donner?!” Caesar exclaimed, his creepy smile plastered across his face. Maysilee’s yellow dress crinkled as she shifted, trying to get away from Mr. Caesar Flickerman. A grin grew across Haymitch’s face before squeezing her tightly, to let her know it’s all going to be okay…somewhat okay. “Well Caesar, It’s a secret, a secret only me and her will know.” Haymitch flashed his iconic smirk to the Capitol audience, causing the ladies in the crowd to cry out for him. “Oh c’mon!” Caesar playfully groaned in annoyance, then switched back the topic to the games. Haymitch’s yellow slacks and white button-up shirt matched perfectly with Maysilee’s puffy ruffled yellow dress, a corset top, and off-the-shoulder sleeves, all in a butter yellow. And a white ascot to match Haymitch’s shirt. The Interview raged on, with Haymitch and Maysilee being the butt of all the jokes and the center of it all.

The train pulled into The District Twelve train station, the tracks were rickety with rust and other parts of it missing. Very few trains came to District Twelve. They only came on Reaping Day or to pick up the bimonthly quota, which the miners don’t usually meet. Sometimes when they do, which is rare, they are rewarded with an off day, then get sent straight back to work. Maysilee would know on the account of her Wyatt spending those off days together. Arms wrapped around each other in a secluded part in the woods, kissing each other like crazy. They would whisper promises into each other’s ears, and if they had enough time, they would fulfill those promises that very same night. How she had missed those days, and how  she will never get to see them again.

Haymitch and Maysilee were standing in the door way of the train, waiting for them to open as Drusilla gave a speech. “I don’t want to face her. It’s going to break her heart.” Haymitch said, eyes filling with tears. “We’ve already done that.” Maysilee said, eyes unmoving “Smile and wipe your eyes, we’re supposed to be the happy couple of Panem.” Haymitch straightened up, wiping his tears on his sleeve. Maysilee hooked her arm reluctantly around Haymitch’s arm, trying not to think about the feeling of her stomach churning as she did so. The doors opened and the crowd cheered for the victors of the Quarter Quell. Haymitch saw his Ma and Sid clapping and cheering in the crowd, Sid jumping around like a mad man. Maysilee’s family cheered and clapped as well, Merrilee’s eyes filled with tears, but also something else, something that contradicted her smile. It was disappointment. Merrliee was disappointed that Maysilee cheated on Wyatt during the Games…If only Merrliee knew.

Maysilee and Haymitch waved towards the crowd, fake smiles plastered on their faces. They looked around, scanning for Wyatt and Lenore Dove, and then, in the very back was the familiar dark curls and the familiar paper boy hat. Maysilee looked at Wyatt, her smile slightly fading.

Wyatt’s eyes were red and puffy, his lips pressed into a thin line as he fiddled with his scrip coin. He was leaning against the train station pillar, slouching over. He didn’t slouch when Maysilee was by his side, telling him “slouching can cause back problems, and I don’t want my Oddsmaker all hurt and bent before 20.” She used to say. Then Maysilee noticed something, something that she had never seen in his hands before. It was a whiskey bottle, swinging by his legs. Wyatt wasn’t a drinker, he said to her that he would never drink heavy amounts of liquor. But I guess after seeing your girlfriend cheat on you on live television, what else was there to do but  drink the pain away? Wyatt looked at her, his face was unreadable. His stormy gray eyes made Maysilee almost freeze on stage, her heart shattering into millions of tiny pieces. She held back her words, wanting to call out to him, to run to him, to do something that showed that she still loved him. But she couldn’t, she was stuck pretending to love someone else.

Haymitch saw Lenore Dove, his rare and radiant girl, standing in the very back of the train station, leaning against a old wall. Her dark curls were a mess, even if they were held back by a red bandana. Tears were streaming down her face as she held onto a book, the book Haymitch had given her on her birthday last year. Lenore Dove looked a broken mess, her eyes red and puffy and dark circles under her eyes. Her overalls were stained with her own tears as she held the book even tighter to her chest. Lenore Dove’s deep green eyes caught his attention, scaring him. They were filled to the brim with tears, and she looked at him from the very back of the train station. Haymitch was about rush down to his girl and kiss her like crazy, like they used to in the meadow. But he had to stop himself, if he did anything like that, she would no doubt be killed by President Snow. So he stood there, on the stage, watching her cry. He felt his stomach churn and vomit crawling up his throat. His love was crying and broken hearted, because of him.

Drusilla scared both Haymitch and Maysilee by putting her lanky hands on either of their shoulders, refocusing their attention to her. The two victors smiled at her, eyes full of hatred just for this woman alone. Maysilee looked back onto the crowd of people only to see that both Wyatt and Lenore Dove, were gone from the station.

—

Maysilee, after reuniting with her family, was marching down the streets of the Seam. She needed to apologize to him, to Wyatt. He looked so broken just to see her again, she couldn’t bear to see him like this. Maysilee needed to explain why she would ever do something like that. If it was up to her, she would rather be dead than to see him so broken. Maysilee knocked on the Callow’s home, begging in her head for Wyatt to answer the door. Instead it was his spunky mother. Maysilee had loved Wyatt’s mom to death, she had helped her and Wyatt sneak out sometimes. Whenever Wyatt’s father needed him on his off days, Mrs. Debra Callow had helped the two sneak out into the woods to go do whatever they had planned that day. Even when she caught them doing…things… they definitely weren’t supposed to be doing, she just let them off with a warning. And when the weight of the candy shop became too much for Maysilee, she would always run to Mrs. Callow for help.

“Hi Mrs. Callow—“

The door slammed shut in her face. That was deserved.

Maysilee had just cheated on her son on live television for all of Panem to see. Maysilee let out a huff of disappointment and guilt, her body staring to shake at thoughts that popped into her head. She already knew Wyatt and his entire family hated her guts, but what if it was getting to the point where Wyatt’s father started using his sorrow and pain as a way to get him to stay doing odds for him forever. She couldn’t let that happen. As long as she was alive, Maysilee Donner would protect Wyatt with her life. An idea then sprung in Maysilee’s head, an idea that could get her chased off the Callow’s property for good, or could get her in big trouble with President Snow, but right now, Maysilee didn’t care. She only cared about one thing, and that was her Oddsmaker.

It was early August, so that meant it was still sweltering hot in District 12, and she could feel the heat stick to her skin. In the dreary heat of District 12, her boyfriend—well— former boyfriend? She didn’t really know what to call them. But basically he would leave his window open all day and all night from May to Mid September, so the heat wouldn’t immediately be trapped in his room. The only way Maysilee knew this was because she used to sneak in through his opened window at least once a week in the summer, and they would do all sorts of things. But this time, the only thing Maysilee was here to do was to explain and beg for forgiveness. Which isn’t usually something she does, begging for forgiveness or begging in general wasn’t something she did, but to get Wyatt back? Maysilee would do anything, even go back into the Arena if it ment that Wyatt would love her once again.

She quickly walked to the back of the Callow’s house and saw his room window open, just as she predicted. Maysilee got on her knees and started to crawl to it, trying to not get caught by Wyatt’s parents or older brothers. Maysilee peaked in through the open window and then she saw him, sitting on his bed, his scrip coin flipping and weaving through his fingers. He was facing the wooden bedroom door, like he was waiting for something—no—someone. Maysilee glanced around his room, seeing multiple alcohol bottles lying on the floor, two empty tissue boxes, and something else that she couldn’t quite make out. Maysilee took a breath in and climbed through his window, trying to be as quiet as one can while technically breaking and entering.

Wyatt’s head shot up and looked at his former lover, climbing through his window. Maysilee stared at him, oh he was so broken… How could she have ever done something like that to him? Her sweet, innocent, oddsmaker. The one that brought her flowers that he picked near the fence, or bringing her favorite fruits that he had politely haggled for, and almost got a black eye. His sweet kisses that made everything in the world feel alright, and his bear hugs that caused all of her anger and frustration to melt away. His powerful, animalistic,  snores that racked his chest, and his loud laughs that would echo in the woods. Maysilee loved him more than anyone else in the world, nobody in all of Panem could ever replace what he was to her. Maysilee looked around his room again, as she had done so many times. It was a complete mess, alcohol bottles that laid next to dirty clothes, tissues laying around the room. And then she noticed something, it was picture of them, kissing underneath a snowy pine tree. It had fallen unto the floor and the glass frame was shattered into pieces. Maysilee almost cried at the sight of it, it was moment in their lives that they thought would last forever, a moment they could repeat again and again. But not any more, not after the Quarter Quell.

Maysilee, Wyatt, Merrliee, Asterid, and Burdock all laughed as they walked through the meadow that had been blanketed with snow. It was a beautiful sight, and Maysilee enjoyed every second of it. Being with her sister and best friend, most of all her boyfriend was there, arm around her shoulder trying to keep her warm. A cold wind blew and caused all of the teens to scream and laugh as they kept walking through the meadow. Wyatt looked at her with those stormy gray eyes of his, nothing in the world could rival the beauty of his eyes. A small smile grew on his face as he looked at her, Maysilee’s nose and cheeks were red as tomato’s as the cold winds raged on.

“You alright?” Wyatt asked, planting a kiss on her freezing cold cheek. “Yeah, just a little cold.” Maysilee sighed, looking at him with her icy blue eyes. Her bangs had a slight bit of frost on them from when her and Wyatt had made snow angels. “Yeah. Me too.” Wyatt smiled, kissing her cold, rosy pink lips, a small smile grew as they kissed. Wyatt wrapped his arms around her, then, to much of Maysilee’s dismay, he broke the kiss. Wyatt was always cold to the touch, even if he was sweating buckets, he was always cold, except for when him and Maysilee were kissing. Maysilee, Wyatt, and Merrliee walked into the forest, trying to get the town girls home before anybody noticed.

Wyatt and Maysilee stood underneath a pine tree, waiting for Asterid and Burdock to finish swapping spit in the nearby bush. Maysilee stayed close to Wyatt as Merrliee made fake gagging noises to alarm Asterid and her “Mockingjay” as she would call him, to hurry it up. Wyatt looked at her in an unintentionally intense way, but it was alright because Maysilee knew what he was trying to convey. Wyatt wasn’t the best at eye contact, Maysilee knew it first hand. He would either stare at you for too long or not even glance at you. Wyatt thought it was just another bit of his flaws that his father would bully him about, but Maysilee was fond of it. She believed it was adorable when he would look at her so intensely, with such love in his eyes that he just couldn’t look away.

Wyatt kissed her cheek again, and Maysilee let out a groan. Wyatt looked at her, confused. “Do you want me to kiss you somewhere else?” Wyatt asked, furrowing his black bushy eyebrows, a crinkle forming in between them. Maysilee wanted to kiss the crinkle senseless until it smoothed out. “I don’t think you could kiss me where I want, especially with our friends around.”  Maysilee teased as Wyatt’s face turned from olive to a deep shade of red. She laughed, her necklaces bounced on her chest at Wyatt’s expression. His eyes went wide, mouth a gape, bushy eyebrows raised.  “But…I think a kiss on the lips would do just fine.” Maysilee cooed as she put her hands on his cheeks and pressing them together, making him look like a fish. “Hey…” Wyatt sighed as leaned in gently. “Hay is for horses. Not for kisses.” Maysilee coaxed, putting a finger to his lips, stopping him from leaning in. Wyatt rolled his playful, then looked straight back at his girl, his “candy girl” he would call her just to tease her. “May I have a kiss, Mays?” Wyatt pleaded, his stormy gray eyes looking straight into her beautiful blue ones. “You may.” Maysilee said, then kissed him, putting one hand on his chest and the other around his neck.

“Not you too!!” Merrliee groaned loudly, while, unbeknownst to Wyatt and Maysilee, she had snapped a photo of them with her camera.

Wyatt stood there, facing Maysilee, unable to look her in the eye. His eyes were red and puffy, dark circles underlining his gray eyes. His hair was a mess, and he reeked of alcohol, specifically whiskey. Maysilee tried to reach out to him, but with no avail. He stepped back immediately, not saying a word. Her oddsmaker, once so full of life, looked half dead. Wyatt looked like he had drank himself to death this past week alone. Maysilee then noticed how much lanky he looked then when she last saw him. She was mortified just at the thought of him not eating for weeks on weeks. “When was the last time you ate?” Maysilee asked. No reply.

When Wyatt as upset, whether his father had insulted him or odds making was getting to his head, he would go quiet. He would respond with short answers like “Yes”, “No”, or just grunts and mumbles. But he wasn’t answering at all, that just made Maysilee’s heart break even more. “Wyatt. I know you don’t me here—“ Wyatt nodded instantly, causing tears to swell in Maysilee’s eyes, but she had to stay somewhat strong. She didn’t like it when Wyatt saw her cry, it made her feel… weak. Even when he told it was okay to cry in-front of him, she just could never bring herself to cry in his arms. But now, since he hates her, she won’t even shed a tear in front of him. “I need to explain to why I did what I did, whether you want to listen or not.” Maysilee pressed as Wyatt kept his eyes facing the floor, not daring to look at her.

“In the Capitol, me and Haymitch were taken to this place called Heavensbee Mansion. It was all quite distasteful, nothing made sense in there— thats not the point. But President Snow came to talk to me and him. He said that if we didn’t put on this persona of us being in love, he would’ve killed you and Haymitch’s girl. And me and Haymitch both agreed to it, because I can’t imagine a world without you Wyatt.” Maysilee paused, holding her hand out, trying to gain same from of contact with him. But Wyatt didn’t move, he was like a statue. Maysilee hesitantly pulled her hand back by her side, building up her walls in case he started yelling. Wyatt wasn’t one to yell, but he’d been drinking, so who knows how the alcohol affected his smart mind.

“Wyatt. This world wouldn’t be livable without you. I couldn’t let you die, you have too much to live for. You’re smart and handsome. You have a future…” Maysilee started to toy with her necklaces.

“Even if that future is without me.” Maysilee felt the tears starting to rise in her eyes. No! Wasn’t going to cry in-front of her Oddsmaker like this. She didn’t need his pity, she just needed him, back into her arms, kissing each other like they used to.

“I love you Wyatt Callow, more than you could ever imagine. I would go back into that arena just to keep safe!  I would do anything to keep you alive, Wyatt. I wouldn’t have done this just to hurt you, because these past 2 years with you ment everything to me. All the hugs, all the kisses, all the conversations, everything that we had ment the world to me! I love you Wyatt. And I hope you can believe me on that.” Maysilee finished, look straight at him, for some sign that he was acknowledging her existence, that she was there. Wyatt’s gray eyes shot up and met her icy blue eyes, sending a chill down Maysilee’s spine. Wyatt opened his mouth, like he was about to say something, then immediately closed it.

The two former lovers just stood there in silence, a silence of regret, of something they didn’t truly understand. It was a hard situation to navigate, how do you even go about it? Then Wyatt mumbled something under his breath, but Maysilee caught it instantly.

“I need time, Maysilee.”

His voice was hoarse, like something had caught in his throat. Maysilee bit the inside of her cheek as she nodded, feeling like she made only a small bit of progress with him. She couldn’t bear the sight of her Oddsmaker so distraught, so disheartened. She wanted everything back to the way it was, back before the reaping, before the day she watched him run after the train as it left the station, shouting her name. He looked so…healthy…back then. Maybe it was because he was eating, maybe because he wasn’t drinking, maybe because he wasn’t crying all day. And she had caused him to fall into those habits. Maysilee stared at the empty and full alcohol bottles laying about the floor.

“Just because I’ve hurt you, doesn’t mean I’m going to sit back and watch you ruin yourself.”

Maysilee grabbed the empty and full alcohol bottles off the floor, and grabbed the trash bag that sat in a small trash can near Wyatt’s broken down table. Wyatt tried to say something to Maysilee, to tell her to stop messing up his room, but for some reason, he just couldn’t. Maysilee stuffed the bag full of the alcohol bottles, not even daring to look at him. Wyatt watched as Maysilee tided up his room, putting dirty clothes in a small hamper in his room, folding and putting away the clean ones away in his drawers. She had to do at least one helpful thing for him, after all the trouble she caused for him and his mind. Maysilee stood next to the window about to climb out like she had done many times before.

“I love you, Wyatt.”

She then climbed out the window, before Wyatt could even say word back to her. Maysilee placed the garbage bag inside the Callow family trash bin, then quickly walked to her shared house in victors village. Maysilee walked as fast as she could, trying not to think about how that might’ve been the last time she’d be in the Callow’s house.
