Chapter Text

In the meantime, at the cafe, Agent Stone stood behind the counter, carefully pouring a fresh cup of coffee. He always loved this part of his day — the quiet hiss of the espresso machine, the rich aroma filling the air, and the satisfaction of getting the pour just right. His eyes stayed fixed on the cup as the dark liquid swirled together with the milk, forming a delicate pattern on top. It was for Dr. Eggman, as it always was.

"Would you like some coffee?" Agent Stone asked, smiling as he held out the freshly made cup.

"It's amazing how you always get the latte art just right!" Dr. Eggman said, chuckling as he peered down at the little swirled picture floating in the foam. He took the cup carefully, admiring it for a moment before looking up at his assistant with an approving grin.

"Would you like to join us?" Dr. Eggman asked, gesturing toward the table where he usually sat to plan his schemes.

"I would love to join you!" Agent Stone replied cheerfully, quickly following him and taking a seat across from his boss.

Over the years, Agent Stone had remained by Dr. Eggman's side through every mission, every scheme, and every long night in the lab. Whether it was bringing him coffee, fetching food, or carrying out whatever strange task Eggman assigned him, Agent Stone was always there. What started as simple duty slowly grew into something more — a genuine friendship, even if neither of them said it outright.

"I know I can always count on you as my assistant — it makes everything so much easier!" Dr. Eggman said, letting out one of his signature evil laughs as he took a satisfied sip of his coffee.

"Yes, sir… I will help you," Agent Stone replied with a small, tired smile, still recovering from the long list of tasks his boss had piled onto him that morning.

Later that day, the two made their way down into the lab, the air buzzing faintly with the hum of machines and screens flickering with lines of code. Agent Stone stood beside Dr. Eggman, watching as his boss worked on the digital systems with practiced precision. Curiosity got the better of him, and Agent Stone found himself glancing around the room, taking in all the strange devices, blinking lights, and half-finished robotic parts scattered across the tables.

"Do you know how any of this works?" Dr. Eggman asked, glancing over his shoulder at his assistant, one eyebrow raised.

"Yes, I understand the devices and equipment well enough," Agent Stone admitted, shifting slightly on his feet. "But I don't quite follow everything you do, Dr. Eggman." He looked away nervously, unsure how his boss would react to the admission.

Eggman merely smirked and reached over, gently guiding Agent Stone's hand toward the control panel. "Well then, let's fix that, shall we?" he said, walking him through the controls step by step. Agent Stone tensed at first, feeling the weight of his boss's close attention, his nervousness bubbling up as usual — but he didn't pull away.

"Okay… I'll learn. I'll take my time," Agent Stone said finally, looking up at Eggman with quiet determination, a flicker of pride breaking through his nerves.

Dr. Eggman studied him for a moment, then let out a short laugh — not the usual evil cackle, but something softer, almost fond. "That's the spirit," he said, patting Agent Stone on the shoulder before turning back to his work.

Agent Stone couldn't help but smile at his boss. For all his evil genius, wicked humor, and dramatic flair, there was an odd sense of balance between them — a mutual respect built not on fear, but on years of loyalty and quiet understanding.
