A Temporary Retreat

Summary:

Wemmbu just wants to leave his past behind and work at a café peacefully.

Unfortunately, the Law disagrees with that decision.

Work Text:

Wemmbu isn't surprised when the Law approaches his café, asking if he's seen anything suspicious.

He's quite used to it, actually. Being... acquaintances with The Immortal Demon had taught him to not be fazed when the Law asks him about someone he does know.

But there's something off this time. Maybe it was how the typical neutral expression got replaced with a glare. Maybe it was the posture.

"Would you like a coffee?" He asks anyway. It's routine; they ask if hes reported anything strange. Anyone injured, he says he hasn't, and then offers coffee. It's past closing time, but he doesn't mind. Not like he has a choice.

"Sir, you will have to come with us this time." Wemmbu doesn't react. He's taught himself that, no matter how surprising the news is, he shouldn't react.

"Why? I've been here the entire day. My customers can support that claim." He makes sure to be careful with his tone. Too rude may come off as defensive. Challenging may come off as defiant. He keeps it curious, with a hint of respect.

"The Law will explain later. Follow us."

And Wemmbu knows better than to complain or fight back. He's suicidal, not stupid.

-

Wemmbu is seated and handcuffed. The material makes sure that he doesn't use any hypothetical ability. The person in front of him is seated as well, closer to the exit while Wemmbu is against the wall with guards surrounding him.

"Sir. Do you have any information on the Immortal Demon?"

"No."

"Has he ever entered your café?"

"No."

"Do you have access to your cameras for your café?"

"There aren't any."

"Why not? It's a better safety decision if you do decide to afd some. Is there a specific reason?"

"Not really. I don't want to add any."

He writes something down in his notebook.

"Have you ever been affiliated with any of the heroes, villains, or vigilantes?"

"No."

"You're sure?"

"Yes."

"Is there a reason as to why whenever chaos occurs, especially with The Immortal Demon, it always seems to be around your general vicinity?"

"It isn't."

"How do you know that?"

"Because I chose a safe spot for my café. Away from commotion. And I watch the news daily; it's not that close, if at all."

"In a recording of The Immortal Demon, he held a blue umbrella with him. Earlier before, this umbrella was found in your shop, and after the incident, it had vanished. Would you like to explain that, sir?"

"I had landed it to a customer. She doesn't match the profile at all, so maybe she had handed it to him."

"Forgive me if I find that hard to believe."

Wemmbu sighed. There wasn't any better lie he could muster up, or a follow up of the story to make him seem more innocent. There was really only one choice left before they tested him for any power; then they'd find both the healing and the invisibility, which would mean they'd interrogate him and watch him more closely because, you know, healing, Immortal Demon... and they might also find out about his identity...

"Could you hold this for me, please?" He held out the handcuffs to a guard next to him. They had nodded in response, taking it.

"Of course."

...

"Wait, what‐?!"

Wemmbu moved before they blinked.

His legs moved faster than the rest of his body when he stood from his seat, pushing the guard to his knees before any power could surge up,  when the other guard beside him had moved, Wemmbu had as well.

He gripped the cops hand and twisted it roughly, causing him to cry out, before he delivered a punch to the face and a claw to the neck, killing him off. He took the gun, shot the cameras around, leaving them guessing when he had or hadn't exited the room. In a second, maybe more, maybe less, he climbed over the table separating him and the interviewer and grabbed his wrists, pinning them on the table, and dragged his sharp claws against his neck, before moving his body sideways to push down the guard next to him and then dragging the orher one down as well.

When he exited the room, he had immediately moved to the staircase. He considered invisibility, but that would make his identity too obvious; he was obvious enough as is, as of right now.

When he reached, he heard the sound of guards and had immediately realized he cornered himself. Wow. Great strategy, Wemmbu. Now, if you want to jump off and clutch, they'll definitely know.

"Wemmbu."

"Guard. Cornering an innocent civilian on the edge of a rooftop isn't very justifiable, for an organisation that prides itself on justice."

"Listen." The guard completely ignored his remark. "We can do this the easy way, or the hard way. Tell us everything you know about The Immortal Demon. Either that, or you fall to your death."

Wemmbu thought about it. For about a second.

"Right behind ya, boss."

Then he walked to the very edge, and jumped off.

-

Wemmbu wasn't an idiot. Suicidal, but not an idiot. And he had some survival instinct. He managed to go invisible and hang off of a part of the building, and jumped to a thicker, safer part, before moving to a blind spot where no cameras his and changed back, before continuing his movement.

He doesn't get surprised when he finds Law officers everywhere, in every corner, asking around and interrogating anyone with slightly purple hair.

Well. That's not good.

He quickly jumped from building to building, gradually progressing lower until he found the back entrance to his café. He beeline towards the box with extra clothing for customers, and ran upstairs towards his bedroom before anyone could catch him.

He had time. They had probably checked this place first and had moved on when they didn't see him, anyway.

He quickly moved to his bathroom to change then when he finished, he hunched over his makeup table and put on eye contacts, among other things, hid the long part of his jellyfish-styled hair underneath his turtleneck shirt.

He looked in the mirror.

He looked... different.

He tried to change uo his bangs; as long as you didn't look too hard, it looked fine. With how he hid his hair, it looked short. His eyes looked blue because of the contacts. For an extra bulletproof plan, he had also tried to disguise himself as a woman.

Don't look at him like that. He's kind of digging at scraps here.

He wore a loose skirt, a belt, and a shirt that was tight around his waist, with rolled up sleeves and fingerless gloves. He had gotten used to wearing high heels in combat, so that too, and thigh high stockings.

Whatever kept him alive, am I right?

He quickly left, making sure to leave the room as it was before.

-

"Listen, I have no idea who you're looking for, but I am not him."

"Any proof?"

"Well, for one, my eyes are blue. You said his eyes were dark purple. My hair is short, you said his was really long. And, more notably. I am a woman?"

The Lawmen considered his argument, then reluctantly let him free with a warning. He turned aeound as wuickly yet casually as possible, then searched for Flame.

He's in danger. Definitely.

He didn't come to the café like usual, didn't even have a confirmed injury. But Wemmbu knows Flame (unfortunately).

-

Flame hates being cornered. If you asked him, that was an unfair fight. Mane was probably coming to help him, but he's ninety nine percent sure that the guy got lost. Or is in the same situation as Flame.

He tried to channel his fire, but the Law officers had gotten better at dodging it and/or ignoring it and fighting through the fire. Unfortunately.

The first few officers getting killed, he didn't question. Maybe the flames suffocated them. Maybe they had passed out of exhaustion.

Then there were more. And more. And he had realized he was being assisted.

This wasn't Mane. Mane would've been cheeky, or gave a warning.

When he turned around to see who it was, he was faced by someone...

Beautiful.

A tall, slim woman who fought with no weapon but herself. Ruthless. Her eyes were blue, and her hair was a beautiful amethyst—

Wait.

"W-Wemmbu?!"

Oh. No wonder she he looked familiar...

"Consider this the third time I'm saving you." He remarked.

The cross dressing man fell down to the ground by an attack from a law guard, and just as Flame was about to help him, he had used his legs to both kick the guard and get on his feet at the same time, surprisingly steady.

The next time Flame had taken a peek from his own fight to see him, he was straddling a guards neck, gritting his teeth. Something like jealous flared within Flame, but it quickly died down when Wemmbu used his heel to make a thin line of blood on the vital point on their neck, before making it deeper with his claws.

The jealousy didn't die down fully. Flame thinks he would be okay with wemmbu doing that to him.

Wait, what?

By now, Wemmbu's hair was set loose from the grips of his tight, sleeveless turtleneck, the jacket being lost somewhere in the battle.

Flame doesn't mind this, either.

Uh, hold on...

-

The fight was over at last.

Wemmbu sat on the couch that Flame once sat on, when he first came. He had evidently retrieved his jacket in the end. Only now did Flame realize what he was wearing, truly.

A tight black turtleneck, now bloodstained, that was sleeveless, showing his soft, pale skin. The jacket slid off his shoulders, and seemed a little large on him. The skirt, on the other hand, was agonizingly short. Maybe that was just Flame. His thighs were very much revealed, and Flame drank in the sight like he was dehydrated, though Wemmbu had gave him multiple bottles of water. A thigh garter held up black, translucent stockings, and high heeled boots matched.

"My eyes are up here, Flame."

oh. Heat rushed up to Flame's face as the less than holy thoughts died down, in favor of the man's question. God, he's smitten.

"Forgive me, princess, a little hard to focus when you interrupted my fight in thigh highs, heels and a skirt, and fought better than some heroes I've seen."

"I had to disguise myself somehow, you know..."

"The thigh highs were necessary?"

"The outfit had to look thought out."

"Right. And where did you learn to fight?"

Wemmbu paused, looked away then sighed. "Well, theres no point in hiding it. I doubt you'd say anything, anyway..."

"Mhm?"

"You know how you thought I was the Invisible Knights healer?"

"Wemmbu, healers don't typically fight."

"I wasn't his healer."

"Huh? An ally, then?"

Wemmbu blinked. "D'alright.. you cannot be seriously this stupid, bro."

"Tell me."

"Flame, I am the Invisible Knight."

"...wait, so you have two powers? A-and why did you leave? When did y—"

"Goodnight." He muttered, before promptly falling down onto Flame's lap.

Flame complained, before realizing he was genuinely out cold.

...oh.

Oh.

Flame almost set the entire building on fire.
